  • In an age where the steps of the cognitive process are under ever increasing pressure to be quantified, Alex Elliot Lockhart proposes returning to a simpler approach. Through play, we can allow children to achieve flow by exploring the world on their own terms.
The intro animation was produced as a collaboration between TEDxBasel and the Hochschule Luzern. This animation was created by Loïc Kreyden and Valentine Moser.
Find out more about this event and the other ideas that were shared at www.tedxbasel.com Alex is a primary school teacher from Scotland and co-founder of Outdoor Cleghorn, which offers unstructured outdoor play to primary-aged children. Growing up on a farm, Alex was imbued with a passion for the freedom and adventure that the outdoors has to offer. He also possesses first hand knowledge about the risks and rewards that such freedom brings. An educator for 14 years, he has taught in India, South Korea, Italy and Cameroon. He is married with two young children who are his inspiration: his son for his restless need for adventure and his daughter for her uncontrollable delight in being outside. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Hi! I am an occupational therapist by trade in the US. I am also a 2 timer on this very stage. Your talk is great. It raises an important issue in many societies today. I am hoping my occupational therapy colleagues will take note and hope to present one day on this topic, too.

I really do like his view on the matter of child play, but the problem is that you as a parent are to blame when anything happens to your (or someone else's) child when they are (or should be) under your supervision.

He’s not saying he doesn’t supervise. He just observed and let’s the children use their imaginations.

Tell society to stuff it, make sure you know who their playing with, where abouts they are, parents phone numbers and that your state wont arrest you for it

Unfortunately the world isn’t as safe as it used to be and you really can’t allow them to be unsupervised in the wild anymore. A huge shame
