    So much truth 😊
I’m 64 and know my hearing is compromised. I used to run a tree company and all the older equipment was loud and zero ear protection.
As far as I’m concerned, I trust you , and your opinion matters to me.
So preach and teach on Sister Steph. This part of the congregation is taking it all in.
    Thanks again 😊

I’m a young (deluded) 70 year old now. 20-35 I had a solid state amp which was well rated at the time-but it was just OK music out of two boxes. Having some funds at 35 I decided to upgrade my integrated amp and duly went around several Hi-Fi shops trying the latest magazine solid state recommendations within my budget. I had to creep out of the shops feeling embarrassed and thinking -was that any better than I’ve already got? I eventually by chance ended up in a small shop and they sold valve amps which they highly recommended. Blow me down I discovered a holographic mellow sound that I was searching for - a bit like Glenn Miller discovering that illusive sound. I still have that amplifier now and don’t feel the need for anything else in my listening environment. I’m just in the process of changing the 35 year old electrolytics though before they explode 😀. Great videos, thanks.

I'm planning to use both. Solid state for watching Movies, YT and such and tubes for listening to music. Just to protect the tubes and also my electrical bill. :)

I use both. If you want clean, fast extended, effortless bass, solid state on the subs is 100% the way to go. Then use quality tube amps for your mids and highs. Every tube amp out there is looser than a well fed goose in the lowest registers. Loudness is not the issue.

A note on hearing capability when getting older. Sure your hearing range will tail off but it isn't as bad as most people make out. It is not a linear scale, loosing the frequencies above 16Khz is only 1 octave of the 10 octaves that the human ear is designed for. You can still hear the full range of a piano and the human voice. Not being able to hear that last octave does not make you in any way unable to appreciate music or hear very subtle differences in equipment. I've just joined the Skunkie club and I can still discern a lot more from the playback of a recorded piece of music than most 20 year olds. Perception is everything, years of experience cover the missing tones at the very upper end.

100% Stephe. So many tube amps being made today sound like SS amps. Like you said, just get a SS amp. If you’re looking for power and a tube sound, just use a tube preamp that adds a bit of that tubey sound. As of now, I’m running a tube phono pre into a vintage refurbished Marantz 20 watt amp.. Great vid! Thanks, Stephe. 👍🎶😊

My experience has been that the weakest link in the system is the SOURCE MATERIAL! Whether LPs, CDs, or audio DVDs....and cassettes I record off the Internet, more often as not, the vocals will have a "metallic" sound, like BBs rattling around in a coffee can. It's probably the mike pre-amp being over driven. I believe that, because the distortion goes away on softer passages.

Ran maggies with Hegel H390 and 590, then picked up Klipsch Heresy IV in anticipation of getting a Decware SE84UFO (hopefully get in August), which had a totally different sound, then Harbeth SHL5 which was kind of the best of both. I like playing with different equipment, and felt a need for an inexpensive preamp. Ended up picking up (used) an LTA microZTOL mk2 Pre/Headphone/integrated (1W @ 4ohms). It drove the SHL5s enough to listen at quiet levels, but when I hooked up the Heresys WOW! It sounds amazing! Big soundstage, speakers disappear as you said, and hear little details I had not heard before. So looking forward to getting the Zen now, and perhaps building a 300B in the future. Thanks for your videos!

Mixing tubes and transistors is a good way to go. I have a Conrad Johnson preamp, and a 350W per channel pair of monobocks. But it's not what you might first think. The Conrad Johnson is a PF1, their first and very limited go at an all FET preamp. The power amps are Vacuum Tube Logic MB300 units, with 8x 6550 tubes each side. Yes, I am crazy.

Very good points, needless to say I agree with all. I'm 61, roughly the same age group as most ppl here, the enjoyment of music has always been the priority since childhood (I also play some) and having been bitten by the hi-fi bug in my 30s I've reached the same conclusions re tube vs solid state. My amps are a pair of the late Don Garber's 2A3 single-ended direct heated monoblocks that can also work with the 45 tube (by changing the rectifier tube) and the results are like the ones described, music comes alive and there's a sense of the musicians being in the room. Up till some months ago my speakers were Tannoy 15-inch, sensitive enough to be driven by these amps but I recently switched to open baffle DIY field coils and I only wish I had made the transition earlier, results are so much better than with dynamic speakers, I strongly urge you to go that way and see for yourself. Another point I'd like to make is that music is best reproduced in the medium it was recorded for, one's gotta hear 78 rpm shellacs played through a modern hi-fi system, the amount of energy these babies have in the mid register that our age group is most sensitive to is breathtaking, there's no way one can hear it on modern digital transfers or even on vinyl transcriptions made during the 1950s or later, so get your hands on various formats of music besides digital i.e. vinyl, shellac, reel-to-reel, cassette and enjoy the music, my 2 cents. Peace

Yes, yes, yes, I am 98% in agreement wih you.
    Just a few comments:
    (a) 0.05% harmonic distortion by solid state amplifier? Probably that is only true if you listen to a constant test tone, not sure the distortion % is just as low for real music. Besides, the 'air', or the sound of a note decay, is often missing from a solid state amp, making it sound 'less real'.
    (b) Solid state amp usually has a much better signal-to-noise level, and the quieter background is audible (even for my 61 year-old ears). That's something we should try much harder for tube amp's.
    (c) Solution: tube pre-amp + solid state power amp, or a hyrid amp. I agree with you there.
    (d) One suggestion: tube rolling - I would appreciate if you could test different tubes and show how the distortion curve changes with different tubes. This is similar to changing different transformers, capacitors, and resistors. It is invaluable to learn which expensive/cheap tube, capacitor, transformer, and resistor works or not.
Thank you so much for your insight.

You mentioned Magneplaner speakers as difficult to drive, for sure they were. My boss had a pair in the 1980s and needed a Musical Fidelity A370 - class A, 185W per channel beast - to drive them properly. But the amp killer at that time was the Apogee Scintilla. Basically a crowbar load down to DC. Only thing at the time that could get close to driving it decently was the Krell KSA range of amps. Brutal things, make sure delivery cost is to the last physical place they will ever move to, but a joy to listen to.

I've enjoyed this video... after years of swapping in and out of solid state I have recently begun to wonder if I've been doing it wrong. Tube amps sound so much better to me than some expensive SS amps I've heard. For me, however, I still have high frequency sensitivity but have lost mid range hearing. Apparently for me tubes really are better. You hearing my vary of course :) .

Dynaco ST70 had this "lush" tuby sound, that was too much for me.
An RH84 converted motorola amp that sounded so good but needed hi efficiency speakers.
I built the MOFO amp from DIY audio and that sounded great. Warm vocals, deep bass, but needed hi efficiency speakers. Unless you leave it on it tends to blow up.
Built an elekit 8200 SE w/ KT88 and the matching tube pre amp very nice but almost too clean
Right now I am running the elekit tube preamp with a Haffler xl280 solid state and that sounds pretty good.
The search goes on.......its a form of insanity.

@Skunkie. This was a GREAT post, and I certainly agree with much you have went over, particularly in regards to push pull tube amps. Many people that just get into tubes think of power and low distortion first and I was no different. So, my initial foray into tube amplifiers, were mainly push pull amps. When working on them, I had wondered why I really wasn't getting drastic changes in tone when compared to a solid state amp. Yes, they were warmer sounding and yes, that was dependent on the amplifier design, but it wasn't the 'earth shattering' sound I was hoping for. Then later on, I started to learn more about tube amps and that mainly "that tube sound" comes from the 2nd harmonic. A pronounced second harmonic adds a musical distortion that follows the audio and that is what gives the tube amp it's characteristic sound. It also was pointed out that this characteristic was dominate in single ended amplifier designs. Push pull amplifiers cancel out harmonic distortion. I did try to change tubes as well, to no avail, and then I found out more about global feedback and how that reduces distortions even more. Why was this so? Well, back in the day, an amplifier's main goal was to reproduce the audio without coloring it. So the goal was to reach the lowest distortion figures as possible. So push pull and local negative feedback would do that, but with canceling the even harmonics and using lots of feedback, it made the tube amp sound more sterile and analytic...much like a solid state amp. I had the opportunity to experiment with a guitar amplifier that used an EL84 tube, and I had tried various modes of operation: Triode strapped, pentode mode, no feedback, some feedback, a lot of feedback, and I was in awe of the results at how the amplifier's sound changed just by altering a few parts. I did try the same experiments on a guitar push pull amp and I couldn't get the sound anywhere near the sound of a single ended amp. So those experiments had lead me to abandon all work on push pull tube amps. I figured for higher power needs and wanting that tube sound, that putting a tube pre-amp before a solid state amp would be enough.
You also answered a question of mine in that, should one go with more than one tube based item in the signal chain. I was thinking about this too and that coupling both the EL34 amp with the Color Pre-Amp might "over color" the sound? You seem to confirm that is the case and that only one stage of tubes in a system is enough. This does have me VERY interested in playing around with the Color Pre-Amp design and see how that sounds with various solid state power amps. As it is, with the costs of transformers going up, it really isn't feasible to pursue push pull tube amps and it probably would be best to go with a tube pre-amp, solid state power amp, should the need for more power be required. Great discussion!

This may sound crazy but I'm running maggie .7's with the kegger/blueglow kt88 design. i run exclusively in triode mode with no schade feedback. The trick was to use a small coupling cap to bring the 3db point up to around 20 hz, and add in subs of course. Room is smallish, 15x17. Holographic is the right description! AB tested vs a big solid state amp (marantz 2285b, bypassing its preamp) and there's no comparison. The SET wins hands down!

    Regarding Tube vs Solid state.
I had a top of the line (Theta. Krell, Martin Logan Sl's setup for Cd's, and a Micro Seiki Turntable, Audio Research pre and power amp (tube based) analog system.
    The Krell sounded absolutely superb.
With the Audio research system, apart from sounding amazing, I honestly believe that I could also "feel" the music.

Hi thank you very much for the very valuable advice
i have noticed a certain commercial success for units that actually combine the two technologies
Usually they have a voltage amplification stage made with tubes and an output power stage made with transistor or mosfet
The nice thing with tubes is that they can provide high gain with great linearity
Just one tube could be enough to provide all the gain needed in an amp Cool
I have also to say that they are not very common around Unfortunately ?

For Hi-End. Use tubes in the preamp. and phono amp. Then use Mosfets to deliver the power.
I would think using tubes in preamplification actually delivers the grunt of the upper bands.
    Regards.

WOW, I agree with everything in this video! But tube or SS, zero negative feedback is paramount. Negative feedback doesn’t discriminate, it lowers harmonics regardless of whether it comes from instruments or the audio circuit. And a piano can naturally produce large amounts of 2nd harmonic distortion, which should not be lowered or eliminated to sound right.
But there are SE, zero feedback, SS amps that boost 2nd harmonic distortion. So, it’s not impossible for SS to sound like tubes. On the other hand, it’s very hard for tubes to achieve extremely low distortion levels.

That’s about the sound of my wife so there may be a benefit but honestly, what good does it do to have a “perfect” system when you can’t hear it? You can buy tube DACs and pre-amps that are very neutral. Or, you can buy a colorful tube amp. Just have to see the energies of all kit together.

In my experience SS amps with high negative feedback also do not sound right. And they also tend to mask the good quality of a tube preamp.I used a Supratek 6SN7/ 300B preamp for 14 years that could sound gloriously tubey with some SS amps but less so with others .Anything designed by Nelson Pass let the good stuff through.A Musical Fidelity A5 and Rotel Michi did not so much.
I also had an Almarro 318B SET which used 6C33C tubes .I got a friend to install a variable negative feedback selector in it that gave 5 different settings .I think all tube amps should have those. On most speakers just a hint of negative feedback sounded best .The factory setting actually had too much for my taste and speakers and zero was too euphonic and bloomy .If you apply too much the soundstage noticeably shrinks.I think you get that same effect with SS amps although the differences are less obvious.Nelson Pass has spoken about that.

I have to disagree on the Magnepan myth... Magnepans work BEAUTIFULLY with decently powered tube amps (50W+) in normal rooms, provided you aren't trying to light up a dance hall sized space. On a similar note, I’m having a Dynaco ST70 (with switchable Triode wired output) with an Octal Dynamutt Board, being built (in it’s finishing touches - lowering of the FB resistor and a B+ Cap change feeding the outputs..) It has solid state components, ie, CCS on the cathodes of the 6SN7 phase inverters.. I might be getting the best of both worlds here, as it seems there is less penalty sonically with CCS on the cathodes vs the plates, in this implementation at least.. Time will tell after break-in if I still find the presentation appealing to me.. I’m not really a fan sonically of the usual CCS implementations (C4S, etc.) in SET designs, and prefer high quality Plate Chokes if possible.. I like both SE and PP amps.. 48 here, but have health problems and rely on a tech building me gear..

I want to know more about the amplifiers you build. Like that beauty you are showing there. Right now I have a Denon PMA 1600 and connected to it a European Audio Team (EAT} tube based phono stage., E-GlO petite.
My amp is an A biased A/B push pull amp. The first 35 watts or so are on “A” and I barely need to go louder. My bass is supplied by 2 REL R7 subwoofers tuned to 45 hz to 48hz at the top. My main loudspeakers are B&W 702’s s2 series. In the turn table I have an Ortofon black MM Ludwig Van Beethoven 250- Shibata on boron cantilever. As you can imagine my soundstage is larger than the largest tank at the Monterrey Aquarium. A the pageant of sound in it almost as beautiful as the pageant of life in the ocean. It is frankly and plainly put, fucking gorgeous. All this done with modesty and careful observation. And thanks to you and others on you tube that spill truth and wisdom. Thank you !!!!! I have acquaintances eith larger more expensive equipment but their equipment doesn’t sound as good as mine. I know this because they say so to me.
But I can’t hold it anymore I want to know if you build amplifiers, how much they cost and what do I have to do live with one of them for whatever time I have on this Earth Planet being 68 years old. Come on open up and let’s talk. You have helped to come this far out this way. The pursuit of music is magical. For me the voice of a cello in my living room is absolutely priceless. You and I , we, are already together in this journey. Stay with me. Let’s take it to the next step. In honest admiration. Luis

Tubes are the only way to go. Solid state just doesn't cut it. I don't want a transistor radio. No thanks. Don't need the low output and distortion. Solid State just really doesn't work when on stage. Tube amplifiers were perfected many years ago and still rock. That's why you build tube amps and why I watch your page and repair my tube equipment!!

Hi Stephe, I agree with you for the jazz and easy listening music, but for bass punch/slam still I can't find it on tube. Some pop/rock music need punches. So still solid state is great for it. What is your thoughts?

    • @SkunkieDesignsElectronics
      @SkunkieDesignsElectronics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Then you are using the wrong tubes. A KT120 amp has MORE bass punch than any SS amp I have ever listened to and a KT88 is close.

Yep, As much as I love my Parasound 2125v2, my upgrade to the NAD C298 (similar to NAD M23) sounds better because it's more balanced between the vocalist and the instruments/band.
As a result, the soundstage sounds wider and there's better placement of instruments throughout the stage.
To add warmth, I add the Parasound 2100 preamp and Cardas Parsec interconnect RCA cables.

These things just amplify the frequency’s that I had lost, there unbelievable. They cost as much and sound as good as the very best Stax earspeakers and worth every penny. I can now understand and hear my wife and children and the music is much clearer. That’s a bonus.

    Great Monologue
I run all solid state (yet I love your channel). Year ago I added a cheap Chinese tube pre amp to a solid state setup for my outdoor speakers - it was really just as a goof for some tone control (it’s out doors I just wanted to add a tad more treble) and to my surprise it added literally a whole new depth. I did many AB comparing and couldn’t believe my ears - it started me to learn more about tubes. Fast forward now - I love this monologue because I run solid state to power my home theater- how ever when I listen to 2 channel I am underwhelmed (I stream from a fairly high end DAC) - very clinical sounding (bland) - I have thought about adding a higher end pre amp - any suggestions or thoughts to this ?
