    My mother's favorite book was Katherine by Anya Seton--and she had me read it when I was 13 or so. She took us to Kennilworth castle when I was 12, and i visited John of Gaunt's berthplace in Belgium as an adult. It, too---became my favorite book. After my mom passed, I discovered 1/12 years ago that they are direct ancestors---great grandparents 16 generations back. I read historical books with a different lens now, and how fun!! Thank you for keeping their memories alive :). We all connect.....

    I did not know Joan Beaufort was the grandmother of both Edward IV, Richard III and Richard Warwick (Kingmaker). I've been fascinated by the War of Roses all my adult life. How the illegitimate children of the royal family affected history is a study in it's own right. Joan appeared to be a pivotal person.

    After reading “Katherine” by Anya Seton in college I became aware of Joan Beaufort, her parents and her brothers and then began to learn everything I could about them. What an interesting family! Considering that they were initially proclaimed illegitimate it still amazes me that because of their descendants and the unpredictable vagaries of history, the family symbol-the portcullis (a huge iron gate at the entrances to castles that could be lowered to trap enemy soldiers before they got inside the castle proper)-is seen everywhere in Westminster Abbey, Westminster Hall, and in all of the palaces where the Tudors, some of her and her brothers’ descendants, lived. Thanks for an interesting look at her life. Should I have the opportunity to visit Lincoln Cathedral (it’s on my bucket list) I will make my respects to Joan and her mother Katherine first of all.

      He probably had more right to the throne of England than the Yorkist or Lancastrian lines as well as the Tudor, Stuart and Hanoverian lines. Henry IV himself was a usurper.

      She's on my list. I currently know very little about her and like to properly familiarise myself with the person, their close contemporaries, and events before making a video.

    I recently discovered through genealogy research that I am a descendant of Joan through her son, George. Obviously this is super super far back in time and I am quite removed. But it is wild just how close we are to history all in all. 📖🕯

    Simply marrying John of Gaunt in 1397 Did not legitimise their offspring. This had to be done by Richard II However the “Beauforts” As they were called were barred from the line of succession. This was rectified later . Otherwise both the house of York nor the House of Lancaster would have been barred from the throne. York through Joan Beaufort and Lancaster through one of her brothers. How different would the lineage of the monarchy if their descendants had not been allowed to inherit. That would be so interesting to learn.

    • @Historyoc
      @Historyoc  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did not say that the marriage of Gaunt and Swynford was enough. Richard II's legitimisation of the Beaufort siblings is in the video. My apologises if details were not made clear, I will continue improve. Thanks for feedback.

    Was she related to Margaret Beaufort,mother of Henry IIV?

    • @Historyoc
      @Historyoc  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yes, Margaret's grandfather John Beaufort was Joan's eldest brother. Joan is Margaret's great aunt.

      @@Historyocand he named one of his daughters after her sister- Joan Beaufort, Queen of Scotland- the aunt of Margaret Beaufort. Thus Margaret Beaufort was 1st cousin of James II of Scotland and their namesake grandchildren who married were 3rd cousins.
