Thank you so much to everyone who continues to amaze me with book mail and just friendship in general. You all rock! If you feel the vibe, please Subscribe!
Having read the first three Malazan books in a mix of mass market and ebook, I've given up and am just going to reread from the beginning in the Broken Binding editions. So yeah, you're gonna be way past me, and I was one of the people badgering you to start in the first place 😂 so these things go! Enjoy (perhaps wrong word) House of Chains! I have that subconscious thing where I don't feel like I'm "worth" giving gifts to (maybe it's that old Minnesotan Lutheranism still in me from childhood, you know the flavor), and I still struggle with the idea that someone just _wants_ to do something for me for no other reason. Another thing that requires practice, and probably reworking neural pathways by the time we're adults.
I have gotten more comfortable with accepting gifts but find a lot of joy in giving especially books. LPQ is one of my favorite series and I think it's severely underrated. I hope you enjoy it!
«Bloodsworn Saga»! ❤So looking forward to get my pre-order of book #3, «The Fury of the Gods»! Yeah, Heidi is awesome! I definitely have «LPQ» on my 2025 MBR List! In September I bought «Navola» by Paolo Bacigalupi (Fantasy inspired by Renaissance Italy) and «The Blood Dimmed Tide» (The Nightingale & The Falcon #2, Historical Fiction inspired by the Mongol Conquest of Persia) for my 2025 Spring TBR! I also bought the Bernie Wrightson-illustrated «Frankenstein» and «The Secret History» by Donna Tartt as gifts to a good friend I am planning to visit abroad: Illustrated Gothic Horror and Dark Academia is right up my friend's alley, she loved the recent «Nesferatu» trailer from Robert Eggers!
Speaking of «The Secret History» and Tartt, I was reminded of the «Once Upon a Time...at Bennington College» Podcast, about Tartt and Bret Easton Ellis' time at that Northeastern College at about the same period of the early 80s, making it an interesting intersection of two authors with very different backgrounds and styles (Ellis the Preppy MTV-obsessed Californian Troublemaker with an Post-Modern obsession for the macabre and risque behind the polished images of Hollywood and New York, Tartt the Southern Wallflower obsessed with 19th Century Classics & 1920's Oxford) that both have shaped Modern American Fiction immensely, often with direct and indirect parallells and callbacks to their time at Bennington, especially «Hampden College» in «The Secret History» and Ellis' «Camden College» in «Less Than Zero» & «The Rules of Attraction»: «Mad Men for Gen-X» to quote LA Times! And now Ellis' obsession with Elvis Costello, has made «Oliver's Army» and «Accidents Will Happen» earworms in my head!😄Cheers Brian!
Very cool stuff, Mac! I'm really excited to jump into Bloodsworn. I've heard Brian Lee Durfee mention Donna Tartt many times. I'll have to check out her books!! ps, love Elvis Costello!
@@heahterranier6926 Sorry, I ment to write Historical Fantasy (that said, Aryan, being of Iranian descent, seems to have much knowledge on the period)! 😅 But, yeah I can highly recommend book #1 in the series, «The Judas Blossom»!
Looking forward to your 3000 subs/ one year anniversary live show!! I am so happy you are loving Malazan! I downloaded the first three when audible had a sale. I am going to start at the very end of the year… I purchased many audiobooks during that sale, including Evan Winter’s the Burning , Piranesi, the Silmarillion & Sorcery’s Legacy.
Murder on the Interstellar Express is a great title! And I've always been terrible at reason gifts. My first thought is usually "you didn't have to do that." But you bring up a great point. I'll have to remind myself that brings people joy to do and I don't want to steal someone's joy.
I’m so happy you’re loving your Malazan journey so far! I can’t wait to hear your Memories of Ice and A Shadow in Summer thoughts. Two series I love! ❤
Beautiful insights about the gift receiving, I am the exact same as you and had never thought of it from that angle before. Always appreciate your one for the roads so much! Also, I am beyond excited to watch the wrap-up (which just dropped, YAY), because I need to hear your thoughts on some of these hauls. Thanks for sharing the bookish joy ;)
Great video and haul! Sounds like lots of good and interesting books. I got two new books this month - the Sword of Kaigen and the 2024 D&D Players Handbook!
Haha you snuck in autumnal! I'm generally good at receiving gifts, but I've always been lousy about receiving praise. But I'm working on it! If you don't dust me on reading Malazan, we might need to have a House of Chains discussion - I'll be reading it the week of Thanksgiving. Have a great month!
I don't like giving or receiving lol. I feel like I rarely give something that someone actually wants, so it ends up just being monetary. The times I do get it right do feel really good though. I guess that also plays into getting them as most people aren't good at giving me something of meaning. Now, my wife has a gift for giving. She nails it everytime with anyone I've ever known. She would also much rather give than receive.
It's just a topic that seems to be overlooked quite a bit, so I thought it would be worth throwing it out here to the community. And I'm glad I did, because I'm learning all kinds of perspectives.
I think most of us are somewhere on the spectrum between "thank you so much" and *I don't know what to say* :D Like, YES, I got a gift, but also now I need to say thank you... I don't want to act so thankful that it comes off as forced, but I also don't want to look like I didn't appreciate it... kind of like when someone points a camera at you and says "look natural" :D
Ah, Ugland spoilers hush! 😂 I’m going to have to get into Malazan since it’s receiving so much praise. I also want to pick up Tanna the Tendersword to read to my niece. Sept. Haul (mostly Audio\Kindle) Tim Dorsey’s Atomic Lobster, Nuclear Jellyfish, Gator-a-Go-Go Vasily Mahanenko’s City of the Dead Quintology Ugland’s 4 latest Good/Bad Guys Star Trek TOS Killing Time Star Trek TNG Contamination Star Trek DS9 The Tempest Star Trek Voyager Mosaic Edgar Rice Burroughs Jungle Trilogy E.M. Foner’s Last Night on Union Station, Soup Night on Union Station, Empire Night on Union Station Conan the Destroyer Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Sorry!! I hope it wasn't too bad of a spoiler. I was thinking that after I filmed it, but realized most people would realize at some point it would happen... Love your haul!!

Find you someone that looks at you the way Brian looks at a freshly unboxed book
ha, you speak truth!
I keep seeing your Batman books on the top shelf. I would love a video recommending some Batman books! One of my favorite newer channels!
Thank you! I have many super hero novels that I ought to revisit for the channel!
Thank you, Brian, for showing off our book! So glad you enjoyed it and we are stoked you'll be adding Tanna to your shelves!
Thank you both again for writing such a fun book that I believe will encourage young readers to dive into fantasy!
I'll start my Malazan journey this year hopefully.😊
It's really something special! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have so far!

I totally get that. It probably does have something to do with reworking how our brains interpret our self-worth.

Excellent on both books! The PH is fun to just read whenever, as well!
@@BrianBell7 I'm enjoying learning about all the changes and new rules with this 2024 release so far!
Is it just a coincidence that “books” and “loot” both have two “o”s in the middle?
I believe, and correct me when I'm wrong, that the Old English term was "blootks"
@@BrianBell7 I don’t have the heart to correct you in this case. 😂
Sounds like a lot of great givers out there Brian. I really enjoyed One for the Road, because I also find it hard to receive.
Thanks, Chas. It means a lot when people get something out of One For The Roads. :)
Pretty good month! Any month with a Malazan haul is.
