Odd coincidence that out of the hundreds of Mamamoo songs and dozens with MVs you happened to pick their two reggaeton title tracks, Illella and Egotistic. Mamamoo and Little Mix often get mentioned in the same breath because they're four member girl groups with outstanding singers. MMM are considered to be the vocal gold standard among kpop girl groups. Hwasa is the member with the jaguar - a Latin American big cat to go with the Spanish diaspora inspired song & MV rather than a tiger. She gets targeted for a variety of reasons such as not having the typical rail thin cutesy looks of most idols and she's not alone. Mamamoo has never fit in with kpop standards regarding beauty, fashion, gender, sexuality or proper behavior by polite female idols and consequently they've always been one of the biggest shit magnets in kpop. Kpop has always blended elements of musical styles and genres and different eras from around the world, as you must have noticed. Latin pop, reggaeton and moombahton were a kpop trend in 2018 when Egotistic was released. Other examples include Lo Siento by Super Junior and Finale by H.U.B, just to mention a song by a famous boy group and an obscure girl group, and there are lots more. However Mamamoo wasn't just jumping on a bandwagon or following a trend when they released Egotistic. Egotistic is the 2nd title track in Mamamoo's year long series called 4 Season 4 Color, in which they released one EP per season between late March in early Spring of 2018 to early March in late winter of 2019. Each album had a theme season & color of course and each title track was about an emotion/stage of love in a four part relationship cycle. Egotistic was the Summer/Red song and the emotion was Passion. The music starts with the passion and duende of Spanish flamenco guitar and journeys through the Spanish diaspora of Latin America en route to Korea and the emotions expressed are as universal as music itself. There's a lot more to the MV than the sexiness that meets the eye on first view. For example each member expresses her own take on Red & Passion via her wardrobe, props and actions, so the jaguar symbolizes Wild and Fierce to Hwasa while leader Solar is Sexy and Provocative with her revealing outfits and come hither looks into the camera and when she flies on the pole it represents Liberation from the egotistic lover. The members also represent four stages of leaving a jerk - Anger, Defiance, Vengeance and, as I mentioned, Liberation. The 4 Season 4 Color project has a number of cyclical concepts and is the most complex and ambitious project ever done by a girl group. The project's theme song Paint Me lays out the main concepts and cyclical symbolism used throughout the project via the lyrics and the deceptively simple MV. Paint Me is also one of Mamamoo's vocal masterpieces. I'd advise getting to know the group and the members before continuing with their extensive and extremely diverse discography. There are two excellent two-part guides to the members, an older one by Purple Hawke and a newer one by MooYT, but the one I recommend is the most recent one called Why Mamamoo is the Most Underrated Kpop Group, which does a great job of capturing their essence in a single video. The title is intended to be click bait but don't let that throw you - it's very well done and is actually an intro to MMM rather than an explanation of why they're underrated. 😊
I discovered kpop when someone did a reaction to blackpink. Started liking them and then I discovered Mamamoo. Game changer. Watch their Killing Voice, it's the best. I'm making it my business to watch as many of their MV and other videos as I can. These ladies are funny and amazing. Did i say funny? Honestly mad I missed them coming to the states cuz i would have been their.
They have a lot of variety in terms of music genre/discography. I can only tell you to go slow. Hahaha. Enjoy the music and lyrics. And especially their voice. That's the most important.
