Thanks for covering some early Whilce Portacio, guys.
Back in the 90s i used to attend a basic "how to make comics" class. Mr. Postacio was invited as a VIP guest along with the father of the late great Nick Manabat (the original penciller and co-creator, with Steve Gerber, of Widstorm's "Cybernary"). Of that time, which i estimate was nearing the peak of the comic boom, Whilce was on a talent hunt on home ground. There was also word that another comic creator - David Campiti - was also scouting for talents locally, but being a fellow Filipino and blinded by the hope of nationalistic favoritism, Whilce was the choice.
We were told before he arrived to prepare out "art" so Mr. Portacio may look through our works. When he arrived he briefly introduced himself to us and told us some "war stories" of his college days -- he was in the pioneering batch at the Philippine Women's University - Fine Arts as a male student), his time at Marvel and his good luck at being part of Image. What burned long in my memory was he was asked how much he earns and he humbly mentioned that he had earned enough that he could go on an extended vacation to any part of the world and not have to worry about his income, at least for a significant "while." Yeah, we wanted a slice of that.
After his talk, the silent intensity in the room red lined when he eventually did his walk. Our setup was three long tables in a row down the middle of the room with two more long tables by the side walls by the window and there were 5 to 6 of us in a table and we totaled, 30ish (some were standing). He walked behind us and scoped our different styles nodding and muttering some words of encouragement to those whose works were exemplary. When he reached my portion of the table, i was on the third row near the middle, he stopped and patted me on the shoulder and said, "hey, it's okay, you don't have to be so intense." The whole room broke out laughing. Man knows how to work the crowd xD.
Of that batch it was colorist Edgar Tadeo who got the big break of working in the American comicbook industry via Whilce's studio. Also worth mentioning is a contemporary of ours, and i believe another Whilce alumni albeit he wasn't a part of our school, the late (and also great) inker and "komiks (our local term for the medium) historian" Gerry Alanguilan. Outside that tiny couple of exclusivity, of the classmates i've tried to stay in touch with, and some scuttlebutt over the years, a couple ended up in animation as in-betweeners at Toei Philippines; while another became a key animator for a children's animated series in New Zealand (he's back and he works as a senior animator for a local network); and another is currently a mecha designer for a Chinese crypto gaming company.
    Apologies for the nostalgia xD.

The paperback of the 2000s Punisher vs Daredevil series is the reason my mom stopped letting me check out comics from the library. Such an iconic matchup for me

It would have been awesome if The Punisher handed her an invoice for the plumbing he did at the end of the issue. He did do the work. Also, the fanny pack is genius.

Hi guys. Have been waiting for Marvel to re-print that run and Jim Lee’s Punisher War Journal’s one. But I guess Marvel is still pissed at those Image guys.
