    A lens is a transmissive optical device that focuses or disperses a light beam by means of refraction. A simple lens consists of a single piece of transparent material, while a compound lens consists of several simple lenses (elements), usually arranged along a common axis.

    Holy crap, in less than a minute this simple animation intuitively explained how zoom works and clicked on a lightbulb in my head. Without words. Absolute masterpiece.

    How can I calculate every dimension?

      1/n+1/q=1/f.
      n = distance to object, q = distance to image, f = focal length of optic.
      -q/n = magnification. (q is negative if in-front of optic. n is negative if behind. F is negative if in-front. -M means inverted image)
      You have to find the point where the image is made from the first lens, and that use that point to calculate for the 2nd lens and so on. Concave lenses have negative focal lengths by default.

      I believe it is almost like a control.
      Imagine on a guitar you have something to wind the strings around to make them tighter, but you also need the other side of the guitar to hold the other side of the strings.
      Hope this is right lol.

      To allow for better control of zoom; since the first lens extends the length the middle lens has to move to produce the same amount of magnification, so that the motors in the camera, or the hand controlling the zoom can be less accurate in moving the lenses and not completely mess everything up.
      In other words, if the first lens didn't exist, then you would have to be more accurate in adjusting lenses, and more likely to over or under zoom.

    Why don't you have a bigger one were the light comes in and focal it on one point in the next one then make it is big as the sensor with whatever lens you to do that

      Would be cool if possible but there is way too much factors that play a role to prevent that, such as colour adoration, the diffraction of light, etc... Also you never want your focal point to be as large as your sensor because you will just have one big circle of confusion instead of detail.
