    One thing I did not talk about in the video was spool size and depth. I sort of touched on this topic when I mentioned having your reel spooled up all the way, but reels from two separate companies may have different true speeds during the retrieve, even if they share the same gear ratio

      @@rhysdoolittle1884 the same kind of lures you would use anywhere else. Fish structure, and take advantage of large rocks and things that break up current.
      Fish don't want to expend a lot of energy fighting the current, so look for slack water and slower currents to fish around.

    When slow rolling or keeping your lure from rising, a 7.5:1 reel helps me concentrate more on a slower retrieve and makes the handle turns more fluid and consistent. When you roll your wrist on reel turns you will notice the lure tends to travel at different speeds.

  • @NikonEntrylevel
    @NikonEntrylevel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Appreciate the video. When talking about gear ratios I feel like it's also very important to talk about the Inches Per Turn (IPT). Specially when buying reels in different sizes and different brands. I remember when I first started building my bass fishing arsenal I thought I was buying the right reel based on gear rations but I later realized that the IPT was the same or close to the same on some of my other reels I already had even though the gear ratios were different. I had to sell and return some of my reels because of this and rebuy them. Once I understood that gear ratios go hand in hand with IPT that's when I started buying reels not just based on the ratio but the IPT that would best suit the style of fishing I was looking for. It could just be me but It may help other anglers realize this small detail.

    • @S2pidMedia
      @S2pidMedia ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea. In general, ipt is much more relevant than great ratio. I consider a fast reel to take up 40 inches per turn, and a slow reel to take up less than 30.
      Personally, I tend to favor faster reels because it's easier to slow down a fast reel than it is to speed up a slow one.
      I slow roll baits in nearly frozen conditions on a revo rocket that gives me 42 ipt. You just gotta pay attention to the speed of your retrieve. And when I need speed, I don't have to crank like a madman trying to catch up with a fish that's in a hurry.

  • @KephasIsStPeter
    @KephasIsStPeter ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Im a huge advocate of vibrating jigs on slow gear ratios but I also throw Texas rigs on them sometimes if the underwater grass is high because I’ve noticed I prefer the torque over the speed due to the fact they will most likely get in the grass anyway.

    I only have one baitcaster, it's my first one and before this video I didn't know what gear ratio meant. I tried out a chatterbait for the first time, and I reeled in slowly but it wasn't working. Well this video explains it, now it makes sense. Lower gear ratio, I have to reel in faster with it than on a reel with a higher gear ratio. I'll go buy another baitcaster with a higher gear ratio now and use my current one for slow or deep drags like for crankbait or Texas rig.

    Tyler I’m a shore fisherman, lower gear ratios work better for me as most of my smallmouth bass are caught on a wacky rig and keeping the bait in the strike zone longer. In fact, with wacky rigging I’ll use a Spincast reel in the 3:1 to 4:1 range and this year caught over 500 bass and had a ton of fun. A relative of mine has a big bass boat and would disagree with me, but he’s also able to cover a lot of water in his boat. I’ve tried faster ratios with different types of baits, and I’ve caught fish on near everything, but slow ratio finesse fishing has been what’s produced the most fish for me. At the end of the day, I say what ever is producing fish for you is what you should be using.

    It is also worth mentioning, if his lure was under water there would be more resistance slowing down the retrieval (depending on what your using) which would influence the amount of casts you get do. In hind site the amount of casts is not as important as making sure that bait is where it needs to be which as mentioned IS influenced by gear ratio.

      I would extend that range up to 7.5:1. I throw that gear ratio for tons of stuff

    I only use spinning reels. The ones I have are 5 or 6.1, approximately, to one. Do they have faster spinning reel ratios?
