Gandara is the ending theme for a TV drama called "西遊記(Saiyuki)→Journey to the West," and "Monkey Magic" is the opening theme for that drama. The drama "Saiyuki," made in 1978, was also broadcast by the BBC and has been remade many times. Gandhara was a kingdom in the ancient Indian region, and this song means "the utopia that was in India." However, in terms of the current territory, Gandhara is not India but rather eastern Afghanistan to northwestern Pakistan. Godaigo had not had a hit song since their debut, and they were even talking about breaking up if this single did not sell well. The members, eager to make a hit this time, had previously sung songs with English lyrics, but they decided to take any order and accepted the request to use Japanese lyrics. This video is the English version released after "Gandara" with Japanese songs became a hit.
As other's say, this is the ending song of the TV drama called Saiyuki. Because, this drama was in 1970's or 1980's, I want to see they was singing this song and others (“Monkey Magic”, “The Galaxy Express 999” (this is the opening song of same title's very famous Japanese Anime) , and “Holy bright”) in their yonger days. Additionally, they song many English version. Please check them.
My ID name is "Ral bucho". Sorry for the Japanese...you can't read it. As others have commented, this song is the ending song of a very popular drama. As a side note, this drama was dubbed into English and broadcast by BBC at that time, so many people in the UK know this song and the opening song, MONKY MAGIC. It is a pity that they did not broadcast it in Denmark.
Micky Yoshino(k.b.) had leaned in Berklee College of Music in 1971, and he met Tommy Snyder(drs.) and Steve Fox(e.b.). After back in japan, he met Takami Asano(e,g,). They produced Yukihide Takekawa(vo.)'s soro album in 1975, and they joined "GO-DIE-GO".
