    Hey Gang! We've been waiting a long time for this one! Had the idea of the reglet baseboard detail wayyy back in the framing stage so really cool to see it come to life here! We did cut a 6 inch piece of base to check it out after we were done and MAN does it look good!
    It feels like we're getting so close! So what team are you on, Vanilla or Blonde?!

  • @notmirelnam248
    @notmirelnam248 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

    When you install tongue & groove ceilings, always measure out how many boards it will take to finish to the edge. If you need 20.2 whole boards, then you'll have a super skinny end piece. Instead, tablesaw your first board so that it will be similar in size to your end board. This is especially important because it allows for framing errors without being too noticeable. If your framers are out of square by 1/2", then that's less noticeable on a 3" wide end piece than a 1" wide end piece. On another note, if your boards aren't long enough and you need to splice them, I recommend mapping out a good "center beam" point that goes perpendicular to the others so that all of your boards remain unspliced and simply dive into the "decorative beam." It is a very clean look that elevates your work above your competition.

      Nice work Studpack. I installed a new shower enclosure last year and wanted to use Trimtex. There's a different version than you used with a wider perforated flange... that's the correct shit to use. Tried to source it...nope...gotta buy lifetime supply. Even though I live a couple miles from Trimtex ...no can do. I ended up using the stuff you guys used for around windows that one place in all of SoCal had. Another: great product nobody fukn has! Next shower I'll call Trimtex again and tell them that I'm doing a re-clit shower and a bundle will get delivered as a sample for crying out loud.

    I did a shadow on a knee wall shadow line between the top of the knee and an oak shelf at the top. I recommend that you paint the recessed shadow area flat black. It enhances the shadow effect and will match the black trim of the windows. Just paint it black before you install the baseboard. Man! That is going to be one awesome garage!

My brother-in-law is redoing his master bath, but it's taking forever, and there's tools and materials all crusted with dried thinset everywhere! 2 things. First, I say go with the Vanilla floor. Has a bit more of a modern feel which matches the vibe of the space. 2.) If you knew you were doing Reglet from the getgo, wouldn't it have been easier to install spacer blocks at the floor and hang your drywall on that. Then just remove the spacer blocks and you would have had the height and reveal ready to go?

  • @planesandbikes7353
    @planesandbikes7353 หลายเดือนก่อน +43

    I really like the modernist touches. But I can't say I have the patience to do all the extra measuring and mudding along the base like that.

    • @hskrgrad
      @hskrgrad หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Kind of feel like this may have been an after the fact decision. Would have been simpler to rip a piece of wood the size they needed for the reveal and tack it to the wall when hanging drywall, then install the reglet before having the dyrwall joints finished. There was a lot of extra work the way they did it...but modern details like this are still extra work even when you do it efficiently. It's why so many homes just stick with the traditional way of doing things.

    Love the video, but would also like to see the finished wall/trim.
    Related to this project, I'd offer an alternative and easier technique (but with a small variation) to achieve the 'no trim' look :
    1. Cut or hang Sheetrock to leave a 6-7 inch (or similar) gap above unfinished floor.
    Simply install a 1/2" 'U-Channel' ('face up' of course) onto the bottom of the Sheetrock.
    Apply minimal compound needed and sand to blend the channel into the wall. The U Channel will give the wall a smooth, straight and protected edge.
    2. Next, install desired flooring to within 3/8" (or less) up to the wall studs. By installing the flooring BEFORE the baseboard, the baseboard will cover the edge of the flooring such that no quarter round or any other trim is needed at the floor.
    3. Lastly, install lumber baseboard (thickness to match Sheetrock) that is smooth and plain, with the height to fit nicely between bottom of U channel and the FINISHED floor. The lumber gets screwed or nailed directly against the wall studs.
    The top of baseboard lumber should have only a minimal gap (if any) where it meets the bottom of the U Channel. Lightly fill any such gap with painters caulk.
    Use more caulk to minimize or even eliminate any such gap, or less caulk if a small valley (such as 1/8" ) is desired.
    Keep in mind, the larger the gap, the more dirt will collect here, so I prefer minimal or no gap.
    The baseboard lumber can be painted in the same finish as the wall to achieve a unified, "no trim" clean and modern look.
    Tip: Pre-paint the baseboard lumber so as to avoid paint on the finished flooring.
    While this technique does not create the 'shadow' effect like the product used in the video, it would create a very clean, seamless (or nearly seamless), transition between wall and baseboard. Better yet, very little, if any, dirt/insects/etc. will collect where the wall meets the baseboard. "No trim" means eliminating the chore of vacuuming your baseboards, and makes the room look a bit larger.

    Looking good guys. I'm more of a minimalist so I probably woundn"t do all the leds but the techniques and methods are very useful and I relly appreciate your efforts to educate all of us on how to do things. Really great to see the woopsies and how to adjust as the project goes forward. I look forward to your posts. Thanks!!!

    Just finished putting new chair rail and base trim in my home after installing new flooring, Managed to get almost all of it installed without nails - caulk only. Changed out the old 2" 70s trim with new 3 1/2" base trim and man what a difference it makes. Transformed my home's 1970s duck l'orange look to the 21st Century. I used Benjamin Moore's Aura interior paints and wow, what a quality paint job that stuff produces!

    You can get sharpeners for multi-tool blades, it's a grinding wheel you chuck it in your drill and then hold the blade to it, and it grinds new teeth into the blade. I've never used it but I've heard good things about it

    It's looking great. Starting to see what the finished result will be like. For the flooring my preference would be the blond for contrast, rather than being neutral. It would kind of tie in with the cedar decking outside too.

    7:00 You can use the mud, the odor goes away when it dries, done it plenty of times in my house and never had an issue with the odor coming back or the mud not sticking or anything. Also use distilled water when mixing and covering the top with water for storage. Works amazing.

    I don't understand why the adhesive is required at all. I'd think the staples, and the expected mud, would hold that just fine. Oh, on edit, Blonde, no doubt. Anyone that wants a light floor like the Vanilla doesn't have to clean it. And calling out the Build show was a good laugh.

    • @MaethorDerien
      @MaethorDerien หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      It mostly just makes it much faster and easier to put up. Trying to get it level using staples is fairly difficult and takes way more time. With the adhesive a single person can put it up using the level very quickly.

      @tsicby หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It's plastic trim, not metal. Good luck getting mud to stick to it. The adhesive keeps it from moving on the drywall and helps the mud stick.

    Yeah I am not a fan of those recessed baseboards most of the time. I think if you do everything in a similar style it works but what happens is it tends to clash with the window and door trims. It also is very annoying to clean as well.

  • @jongriffith4293
    @jongriffith4293 หลายเดือนก่อน

    For cutting outside and inside corners, I used a block under the trim on the miter saw. 3M 77 works well also, and after all was said and done, I used no levels to apply it and it came out straight as an arrow. Also tiled the floor before cutting the drywall to 6" so the very last step was securing the baseboard to a completely finished wall/floor...
