Merle was a despicable human being but he was a trained badass who at the very least should have put up a fight against the governor. He went out like a man though
They were brothers...and no matter what happens..in the end...theyre still brothers!! RIP Merle!

"I aint gonna beg... I aint beggin you" were not only Merle's last words, but he also said that back in s1 when he was all alone on the rooftop in Atlanta. He isn't talking to the Governor in his last moments. He's talking to the same person he was talking to back on the rooftop. God. He sees all of this (being handcuffed to the roof, being killed by the Governor) as punishment for the things hes done, but he has never once begged for God's forgiveness, and he wouldn't even do it in his final moments. Very touching moments. Merle Dixon was truly one of the most complex characters in TWD history. He will be missed RIP

I have to respectfully disagree, they made him an asshole at key points where he could have found his way. The only real moments he had were near the end. They were good moments, but watching all the episodes before this.... him being a junkie, his reasoning for being loyal to the Governor, his self pity after he realizes Daryl belongs with them... Idk, doesn't seem like a Merle transition to have a change of heart and if he had he would have sided with group instead of go out like a badass. He's not that complex in my opinion, but he definitely could have been.
@@UndeadItachi2 In the end he just loved his brother Daryl and sacrificed himself so his brother and his new family would have a fighting chance against the governor. Merle wasn't a complex character at all. He did the right things at the end of his life and died a hero's death which still made him badass.
firstpower100 he also helped Rick and CO b/c he killed Garjulio and the squad he was leading to hunt Michonne all got killed by her except Garjulio who Merle killed then lied to the gov saying Michonne killed all of them and Garjulio and then he led a bunch of walkers in this episode to kill more of the govs men and he killed Ben and more of the govs soldiers b4 he died leaving him Martinez and Shumphert and the inexperienced woodburians left to be in the govs army.
Merle did it for Daryl. He was always looking out for his younger brother or trying to and when he saw that Daryl had grown and stood up to him. Merle realized that Daryl wasn’t going to go or be with him he had to do something (sacrifice himself). and Merle knew it would give Daryl a chance to live his own life and a better one than Merle had.
This episode always gets me in the feels. I can't handle it when Deryl cries! Merle was a product of an abusive home, just as Deryl was. Exposure to Deryl's new family, short though it was, changed his heart, and his redemption was true. RIP Merle.
So if merle was the product of an abusive home, why isn't Darryl a racist asshole too? they're blood brothers.
@@gettingpissedoff because as the younger brother, Daryl saw first hand how his brother was received during those moments. And in season 1, Daryl was written to be an abusing racist asshole, reedus had to fight for them to rewrite the character into one for redemption,
yeah I think all his small talks with the crew especially Carol and then with Michonne convinced him he was able to change. Like he said how Carol had changed so much and she was a late bloomer, and she said maybe he was too.

All the little moments were piling up in Merle's head, but when Michonne told him that Daryl was needed and respected with his new family, that was THE moment. He wanted to do everything he could to preserve that family for Daryl, the family he deserves.
As much of a jerk as Merle was, he did make one last heroic stand and I respect that. Michonne's words really did get through to him. Poor Daryl. Nothing breaks my heart more than Daryl crying. Love Rick's speech to the group. He realizes that a Ricktatorship is not what the group needs. One more episode for S3 and then on to S4 which is my favorite season! I'm already hyped to watch your reactions to it!

I think Merle redeemed himself. I think it was such a heartbreaking death, especially seeing Daryl’s reaction. It still makes me cry and I’ve watched it a dozen times! I loved the dynamic Merle brought and would have loved for him to continue but I think he had a good death, he went out doing the right thing and trying to protect his brother and the group. I can’t wait to see your reaction to the next episode! Great job on your milestone!
There was another bit of dialogue in "Home" when Daryl & Merle were out on their own not only were they both abused by their father (Merle left the home because if he didn't he would've killed him and Daryl still needed a home to grow up in after losing their mother & so Merle did that so he didn't kill him) but Merle told Daryl "I bet you never told them that we were gonna rob that camp blind" referring to the Atlanta camp. But since Merle got left behind & Daryl then was left with their group, that didn't end up happening. Hershel said it best about Merle being erratic but having military experience and how Rick and the group shouldn't underestimate Merle's loyalty to Daryl. I was also really glad that they added this redemption arc for him, though I wish he would've had some more time to hash it out and truly become better & help the group for another season or so before dying, it was a really well written arc!
I wonder what it would have been like if a woman had shown some love to Merle? I feel like him saying he can't go back was because he felt he would never be accepted. It seems he and Darryl suffered a lot of abuse growing up and no love. I think he sacrificed himself so that Darryl could have a family. Michonne convinced him that the group loved Darryl.

Lol! The thing is, the Gov. Knew where Andrea was headed and that she was in a hurry to get there, so it was easy enough to intercept her. She should have gotten close, stayed under cover and layed low for a while.

@@anthonyortiz1856 Andrea has the skills to blend in with walkers, and she was recklessly traveling through open fields in view of the road. She should have stayed in the treeline, approached the prison and then layed low long enough to be sure the Gov wasn't there. If she had done that, she would have avoided him all together.
Andrea was not so good at hiding.... I just watch this and laugh because I know I would be a stealthy little bitch LOL but I also think she was trying to get to the prison as quickly as possible so she could warn them of the Govna's plan ~ Lacey

Even what Hershel said probably resonated with him. And what Daryl said to him "I just want my brother back" and everything else. I think it all hit him at once.
That scene with Daryl and Merle was heartbreaking. But I love that Merle got his redemption. And Michael Rooker got to be a zombie. lol I like how Carol's character is starting to evolve here. Her comments applied to herself as much as to Merle. Same with Michonne. Lots of growth all around.
Michonne really got to Merle and in the end he found redemption and that makes him my favorite character R.I.P Merle Dixon you went out like a Soldier
Merle is one of my favorite characters in any show. His redemption ark is so good. I forgot that even Michone noticed Merle had a good heart underneath his bravado.
I always liked Merle even though I knew I shouldn't. I just couldn't help it. I had a huge soft spot for him. And seeing him sacrifice himself to give Daryl, Rick and the family a shot.....that was everything for me. And made me glad that I had always liked Merle. And yes I think Merle would have been a wonderful addition to the family. The thing about Merle that was evident from the start was that loyalty and love meant everything to Merle. It's just Daryl had been the only person he ever had in his life. But he grew to care for them I believe and would have had that same loyalty to team fanily. Just what I think, lol. And I still miss Merle to this day. And you have to admit, even in his most asshole moments he could he hilarious

Merle’s sacrifice how I interpreted it was he did it for nobody, but Daryl cuz he was so selfish and not really there for Daryl that much when they were growing up. So he in turn saw this is his chance to finally do something for him for once cuz he could see that Daryl had made a new family in Rick’s group. Merle loved Daryl and he always did, but he was a bad brother and he knew it.

Edit: I could say so much about this episode, but I'll leave it with after 7 years, I still tear up a bit. Merle redeemed himself, for his brother, and even the rest of the group. He tried. On a good note, Michael Rooker, a fabulous actor, went on to "Guardians of the Galaxy" after his TWD life, and youd love him in anything he does. Well she was wrong about that part.
Merle knew he would never be accepted into the group after what he did to Glenn and Maggie, and no one would care if he died. He thought he was expendable enough to give Daryl and the others a fighting chance against the Governor by taking out as many men as he could.
What makes this more tragic is that Daryl did care, but Merle didn't think he did because he never showed it. Merle died believing that his own brother didn't love him.
Side note: Can confirm that was Ben (the kid) who Merle killed. Allen is going to be pissed and want revenge.
TWD Rule Nr.1 When Daryl cry, you cry

I don't think Meryl would have changed much, and he would have challenged Rick & Daryl continuously, but I think everybody would have been able to accept him if he proved that bottom line he's with the group. That's what Carol was trying to tell him by saying "Are you with us?" And I think Michonne reminded Meryl that he's running again, but he didn't have faith in himself to incorporate himself with the group, because he doesn't think he fits with Daryl's group, so he did the next best thing for his brother - he took out as many opponent soldiers as he could, so that if the Gov'na does attack, at least there's that many less soldiers to deal with. RIP Meryl. He did redeem himself. Not that it's an excuse, but remember that Meryl was high when he was on the rooftop shooting off his mouth, and the rifle. I think without drugs to screw up his brain, he's at least not irrational. I believe he really would have killed Glenn, because he was following orders. It's the same with Daryl. Daryl was ready to follow Rick's lead to take Michonne to the Governor, even though he clearly wasn't happy with it.
This is one of my favorite episodes, even though Daryl makes my heart ache at the end.

@@ellissmithjr6599 Yes. He couldn't go back because he believed he was too far gone, and there was no turning it around. He thought he belonged with someone like the governor. That's why he was going back with Michonne as a gift. But Michonne made him realize that he was making choices that he didn't have to make. He was the one that was "walking away" again. I love this whole episode. Meryl was such a fascinating character. And he was fantastically played by Michael Rooker.

Remember Carol reacted the same way with Ed? This is also another reason why I say they're so bonded. I truly love them. I always feel like these two have such in depth characters.The rest of them have had their trials but these two were already living theirs.
I feel like the Merle situation was a product of him seeing the dynamic of the group together and how ppl treat each other. How they treat each other.He knows Daryl has a family now and he is on the outside. He is giving Team Fam a chance. He told Michonne if she fed back to get ready for what comes next.. so he knows there will be fallout of what he is going to do. I also feel like Merle knows he could never be Daryl. He is a different person then Daryl. He finally did something for someone else. It was a heroic act. I feel like Merle reacted on emotion to a lot of things. He has never really thought things through. Just reacted. He tried to help the best way he knew how. I’m sad that Merle is gone. How do you feel this is going to affect Daryl? Will he be stronger or messed up like rick has been over Lori? Meryl sacrifice himself cause he knew he could never go back to Woodburry and he knew he would never be accepted at the prison even tho Daryl is the only reason he was still there. He also knows that he does not want Daryl to die and he knows the governor will do it. So he was trying to stop the war.
That’s actually very true , I always thought what a dumb way for him to die as he could have waited with rick for them to fight it out and whatever happens happens , but Merle goes on a suicide mission as such, he was Impatient but guess he didn’t really care as of the reason he wasn’t accepted anywhere
It's so sad tho, I feel eventually he would have been accepted. I think he would have always been a bit of a jerk but he would have mellowed out and been tolerable.

You know, when Rick is addressing the group, he’s rolling something around in his fingers. Turns out it’s the bullet that killed Lori, not the casing, the actual bullet. He found it embedded in the concrete in the engine room and kept it.

Well, when Michonne tells Merle: “we can go back.” She’s doesn’t just mean physically going back to the prison, she also means gong back to who we used to be. That’s what Merle is trying to do, be Daryl’s big brother again, like Daryl said: “I just want my brother back.”

Lori's clothing choice each time Rick sees her is a good sign of where his head is at or where his morals are on the path he is currently taking. It also could be seen to be leading him down the right path.
I can't believe it took me this long to notice, but all throughout season 3, and even during the hallucination in season 2, Merle refers to Rick as the man who left him on the rooftop, but when talking to Michonne he refers to Rick as the man who came back for him on the rooftop. Heavy stuff man, I miss Merle so much.

Merle is definitely a character that I like to imagine making it a lot farther in the series. He was definitely a character I grew to love; probably also helped that Michael Rooker also played Yondu, my favorite Marvel character.
While I do believe he was killed off earlier then I expected, I wouldn't say he was wasted. At least not compared to others like T-Dog.
Originally he was supposed to make it to the hunters arc (terminus) and I believed they would have done that and have him killed off by them. As he wouldn’t have been able to survive in Alexandria without a massive character change. Unless of course they had him with the biker group and had him somehow join the saviors and use him as “Dwight” but that’s just my thoughts on that.

Boy, I really wish I could have warned you both about this episode...a gut-wrenching one with Merle finding some kind of redemption, loosing his life and Daryl was the one to have to put him down. I remember crying a good bit when I first saw this episode. I visited that filming location before where the shootout happened and where Daryl put down Merle. I remember standing in the exact spot where Daryl had to do it...and I cried.

this was the moment that defined Carol and darryl for me. everybody wonders what the relationship was, lovers, brother and sister, best friends, but it's none of them, they are victims to terrible things before the walkers took over, they have a bond because of that that can't be labeled. a husband is supposed to protect his wife, a big brother is supposed to protect his little brother, they didn't. Then you look at how she killed her husband, and he killed his brother, it's the same. and look at you drinkin that Pepsi with a straw, fancy. hehe.

I loved this episode. Merle trying to take out as many of the Governor's men was very heroic. I believe he did it, because he really did love his brother, and I wish Merle would have lasted longer.
It broke my heart to see Daryl cry. He's such a strong person on the outside, but inside, he has a big heart.

Iconic episode this, right up there with 'Clear' as the standouts of Season 3. Great reaction as always! Merle was always going to try and take out the Governor because he knew that the prison (and Daryl specifically) will never be safe if the Governor is still breathing.
When Meryl Dixon is the voice of reason you know you lost your way
The thought of Merle doing it for Daryl never even crossed my mind, but it makes so much sense! He’s always cared for him, but he’s also abandoned Daryl multiple times it seems. And without Merle being there, Daryl flourished into a respectable man with an entire extended family to love him all the time. Maybe, Merle saw this and decided that he couldn’t be around him anymore. And If he couldn’t be around Daryl, he simply did not want to be. And, on top of that, he went out doing the right thing- ultimately trying to stop the Gov from attacking. Awesome awesome awesome!

@10:13 what michone said about evil being light as a feather, that's why the gov was wistling setting up his torture room and while hunting his prey. I felt it was a thing the writers used to portray his sadistic nature.
Merle had one hell of a redemption if you ask me :D You know people shit all over Merle the entire series and yet, everyone always viewed him as the biggest asshole. Such like key moments when he ran into Glen and Maggie, They raised there guns on him with no justification or reason to and Merle lowered his.
Mm no people don’t like him because of the season 1 and his character literally didn’t change. The only thing “good about him” was that he was funny because he was an a-hole and the last of his moments.😐

And for that reason he couldn't have been redeemed? You must hate Star Wars then. Vader is the same ruthless killer for 20 years, and in the last 10 minutes or so of the film "redeems" himself, which is the main character arc in the whole series. I guess that last few moments as he saves Luke mean nothing because half an hour earlier he was just the same as he'd been for decades?

Awesome episode. That moment when Daryl finds it is so sad, but one of the most iconic and best scenes as well. Usually the sad ones are iconic, haha. But there are others! Mega excited for you guys getting into season 4. It is my absolute favorite season!!

Trivia on the episode:
Merle was not supossed to die here. Michael Rooker was supossed to continue on the show on the 4th season.
Part of the original plot of this episode involved Milton and Andrea trying to kill the Governor (so this implies that the script for the previous episode was quite diferent as well as Andrea would still be in Woobury but not as a prisoner).
Merle's death was decided last minute (one day before filming of the episode begun).
Merle's final line (which is towards God and not the Governor's) was improvised. The "No" that the Governor said after that was also an improvisation. Both were not on the script.
Merle told Carol she wasn’t the same as she was back in the camp. Maybe she was a late bloomer. She said maybe you are too. This is a very DEEP episode in my opinion.

This episode got me right in the heart. As somebody who would do anything for his younger brothers, seeing Merle go out like that was pretty powerful. I'd like to think if I was in his shoes I'd have done the same.

I agree with Steve about what Merle saw with Daryl. He taunted Daryl with being Rick's yes-man, but he could see it, and Carol helped there; Daryl has a new family, and it's a better family than he had. They respect Daryl, care for him, and Merle knows that Daryl is better off with this group. He belongs, which Daryl never did before. So Merle's an awful human being, but he does love his brother, and also feels guilt over leaving Daryl to the abuse for years. Sorry for two long responses. Great reaction/discussion, you duo.
BTW: I believe he did it for Daryl, and only for Daryl.
Merle actually hadn't been told. He thought plan was still on. He wasn't doing it on his own. That's key information. He was still just following orders. He hasn't been informed of Rick's change of plans.
I knew Merle didn't know that Rick had changed him mind "for sure"... but Merle always knew that Rick would ultimately change his mind.. that is why he took it upon himself to take Michonne by himself. "To make sure it got done"
@@DuoReacts that's one way to look it. But I look it like he was doing the dirty work no one else could or would do that he was told to do. But definitely, I think that was part of it. That he saw Rick doing what he did. But also was supposed to do it by himself. That was the plan to begin with. He just didn't give Rick anytime to change his mind like you said.

Merle went on his suicide mission because he didn’t feel that he’d be accepted at the prison. Glenn hates him. Rick wasn’t on good terms with him. Maggie probably didn’t care for him because she wasn’t even part of their group when Merle was around. Merle felt like an outsider and didn’t think he had any options. He couldn’t go to woodbury because they’d kill him, and he didn’t think he’d be accepted at the prison.

I think it hit Merle hard to realize he had killed sixteen people for a man who just threw him out at the drop of a hat. I think it made him realize that wasn't who he wanted to be and really pushed him to going out to die trying to take out as many people as possible and hopefully Philip at the same time.
If you remember, Daryl was also mildly racist too in the beginning. Not as much as Merle, but they obviously grew up with a pretty shitty family. Daryl was able to break out of that because he had Rick's group. Merle didn't have that until very recently. Daryl also didn't seem to always be intentionally harmful with it but more that he just may not have known anything else, if you get what I mean? For me I think regarding Merle if he had survived, he would have gone through similar experiences as Daryl and eventually gotten better. I don't think he'd ever quite necessarily reach the point Daryl got to, but I think he could have changed in that sense. He'd yeah, probably always still be kinda an asshole, but I think all that past behavior is something he could have fought off like Daryl did.
I'm not so sure his good side was always /totally/ hidden though. When Andrea told him Amy died he told her "she was a good kid". Despite what happened at Atlanta, he did attempt some kind of consolation. I think it was always /there/ but he was probably trying to mask it behind being an ass because it wasn't really something he was known for.
