Running Vs. Cycling | Who Is Faster - GCN Or GTN?

- The Harriers Vs Cyclists race pits runners against cyclists on a 5.5mile off-road course, and this year it pit GTN against GCN. Surely the cyclist will win easily right?

The course is very simple. Basically, go up and down a big hill! The difficulty of the climb and the terrain means that the runners tend to take a big lead on the first sections. The question is can Simon catch Mark up on the descent?

Also it does look like pretty good MTB terrain. "The hill is too steep to start on your bike.." What? You need a lower ratio gear setup.

You would obviously be much slower up the hill if you had a lower ratio. This is a race, not a leisurely ride. That is precisely why cyclocross riders choose to run up steep hills rather than riding.
would love to see this race again but on a mountain bike instead just to see how much of a difference it makes

nicely timed video. two in our club have challenged each other on a straight road hill climb, and in that case I think it might be the runner who wins. Their race will be up Ralph Allen Drive (local to Bath for the nonGCN readers), steep but no bike carrying.

I dont even ride my roadbike on a regular bases but these videos are seriously entertaining keep up the good work guys
i extremely happy to see the Bike take it at the end...But the entire video i furiously asked myself... Why O Why did you not use an XC mountain bike. The wider tires and suspension would have easily gave you speed in the field and through the rocks!!
As a runner I’m happy that we lose but just for a few seconds because running takes a lot of effort, just running those hills takes the full breath out of you.
Until you have to carry it up the hill.... but maybe a lightweight Islabikes style one with flat handlebars

This is my local race (though I've never entered) and I thoroughly enjoyed coming out to watch last month. I spotted Si on the descent (about 30sec before he fell off) but it was only a couple of weeks later that I realised I had a photo of him on the way up too!
A xc bike would kill the runners

Most people use an xc bike for this race however the course record is still held by a runner
I would have gone for an enduro mountain bike just because they climb a bit better than the xc
Plus very few runners can travel at 25 mph like Usain Bolt. I prefer cycling or skating.
The runner was extremely generous to Si letting him through on the inside at the end and that alone would have changed the result. Also not stopping to see if Si was ok after his spill so I'm calling that a win for the runner.

Living history farms race in Des Moines Iowa. At one point the worlds (or North America's) largest X-Country foot race, loads of great fun, and apparently some idiots try to do it on cross bikes. I only ever did it on foot and absolutely loved it. Great video!
They actually placed 5th and 6th in the race over all

Did you guys consider using an xc bike? I realize that's a bit more in GMBN's wheelhouse, but it seems like some lower gearing and some extra traction could have done you some good

Man I'm showing my Mum this I'm a cyclist and she used to be a runner!! I think GCN should do the Redlands classic its a great fun RACE I believe it takes you up sunset (it's a big climb), and I ride on sunset all the time and if I have time I'll ride to the water tower its super fun! I've watched the Redlands classic since I was little if GCN did the Redlands classic stop by bike coach and see the GS Andiamos!!! (Junior team not adult team) - Natalie

The bike was fine because it was much lighter than typical MTB.
However he should really change that steering wheel and use typical MTB one with easier access to brakes!
No wonder he fell down at 4:50 if you have to lean in order to brake.
Si replied here if he knew the terrain beforehand, he would take the XC.
A carbon XC bike doesn't way very much for example I have a carbon Full suspension trail bike and it comes in at 22 pounds. And Si used to be a XC racer so he woulda killed it on a super light XC bike
eh we didn't see the whole race, how often that even he could pedal up a gradient with the mass start and shortness of the race, there may very well be someone in your way that's going break your momentum
I do agree an xc bike may have been better, but I don't think it be such a game changer
All that running is a lot easier with a cx bike there made for the fields as well

Si needs to run more and he may win by a slightly larger margin, but ultimately it was a closer race than I would have guessed. I agree with a couple other comments made, GET GCMBN in on the race too....that would be cool to see.

Not to discredit Si's abilities, but wouldn't an XC mtb be more suited for that type of terrain? Seems awfully rocky, rooty, and squishy for a cross bike in a lot of places. Plus, you can corner much faster on the downs with an mtb tire and they don't roll to much worse.

This is great...more videos like this. However, I'd change up the format a bit. In this instance I think we're only answering the question of which terrain is better suited for biking or running, not the athlete. The set of challenges should be something unrelated to any of the sports, but still a series of athletic challenges...or at the very least a series of each other's sports using the same equipment and variables.

I can’t help but feel this is more about appropriate terrain than a real comparison, it’s not fare from saying “who would win, a cyclist or a swimmer”.

There’s a race here where the skiers go in the morning and the fat bikes in the afternoon. The skiers usually go faster over the same course.
Think gmbn with xc bike will rush it at all. cc is not best deal here
Pre-race prep demonstrates perfectly why I sometimes wish I was a runner (again), instead of a cyclist.
I think it should be GMBN vs. GTN in this case, considering the terrain :)

gmbn aren't fit enough, that's the simple reason, great guys, fitter than I, Insanely talented, but not on par with Si and friend.
Si may be fitter. But Neil on an XC bike wouldn't have to carry over those rocks and could probably descend a lot faster. Who knows.

We don’t all take ages to get changed! One look at those glasses should tell you Si is a special case
