Congrats on the new book!🎉
Jec, my 8 year old Quarter horse has catching patella’s and mild/moderate hock arthritis and if I’m not “schooling” him (which means trying to teach him how to ride in balance) how do I exercise him if he’s not being ridden in balance? We are both learning together how to ride more in balance so it’s not always productive, but going in the right direction now over time with practice. I’d love to ride him on the trails just how he likes to be ridden with a loose rein, but from what I’ve learned that is not good for him. However, then he would be more fit, as right now we are only “schooling” 3x/week, with limited success at the moment with those “right” moments of balance. Truthfully, I’m dying to just trail ride again, but don’t have a horse to do that with. Do you feel that riding on a loose rein maybe more on the flatter trails (as going downhill isn’t too fun for him) would be better than not getting more exercise? I’ve gotten a program from you….maybe I need to update it??? Oh yay, another book - I love all of yours!!! Thank you for these monthly Q&A’s and all your TH-cam videos.
While it is indeed important to ride your QH on a light contact and improve his balance in order to minimize effects of his arthritis, it is also highly valuable to ensure he gets as much daily movement as possible. This can be in the form of low intensity, meandering jaunts down the trail on a loose rein. So long as you are *also* doing a few days of schooling each week (vs. loose rein, casual riding), you will be helping improve his condition.
@@jecballou thank you! That makes sense!! So appreciate everything you do to help novices like me - and most importantly my horses.
