I bought this item and love it! This channel remains one of the best outdoor hiking channels and it hasn't added a video in years! No HD, no 4K, no bikini girl clickbait. Just good info and a great host!

Very complete review. I've had my Gatewood for several years now. 11 ounces for rain gear and shelter is hard to beat. When I'm expecting good to moderate weather, this is my go to backpacking tent. If I know storms will be rolling in, I go with a beefier tent like my Big Ages Seed House 2. Overall - I give my Gatewood 5 stars. It's as good today as when I bought it years ago.

Your videos are so clear, and well structured. They answer all the questions that one may have about USING a particular product. Keep up the good work.

This was a great review. Concise and full of info. I want one as it is really not much more money than the other Poncho/Shelter combos and really has some design features that matter. Thanks again!

For those of you who only use if good weather anticipated.....I used this in a torrential all night downpour in the Adirondacks and was perfectly dry.

We are going to kayak the majority of the Amazon River. We are considering a several of these with the nets.
We will have separate wet weather gear and these will be primarily shelters. We realize there are other shelters that may be more substantial for an excursion like this but have our reasons for considering a shelter like this.
We are going to make the trip as time expedient as possible.
A writer/photographer will be with us and is hoping National Geographic pics up her story...
Any thoughts on this piece of kit for our trip?
    Wish us luck
    Thank you....

You think this would be a good shelter for a sept jmt hike? Trying to lighten my load as on a tight schedule....currently at 32oz for my lhg solong6...

Richard Moran Richard, This would be a great shelter on the JMT. Steve

You end up picking up a cape for your hike? I'm planning on taking mine on the JMT this August. Would be interested to hear how your hike went.

Is the material rugged enough to hold up if you have to use it as a poncho for an extended period of time? Is the silnylon rip stop? Thanks great video.

+Chuck Cunningham Yes, with normal use the nylon is very strong.

My Gatewood cape has pronounced crinkles in the fabric, I noticed the one in the video is pretty smooth. Did the fabric change or place of manufacture?

We probably used a new one for the video. Yours is probably just from normal stuffing. Steve

Do you think using an elastic tie out cord would help with tensioning? I have used it on other tents and it worked out well.

    • @OnlyTheLightest

+Chuck Cunningham Sounds like a good idea to me.

Update: I received my Cape and am impressed. I staked it out using 1/8" elastic shock cord and it worked great. You don't have to "retension" plus you can raise or lower the center trekking pole for more tension or to creat more air space around the perimeter. I also use this in conjunction with a zpacks bivy (5 oz.) making a nice 16oz. shelter. With stakes the total pack weight is 18 oz! I love this cape.

You also can seam seal using 100% silicone caulk ( GEII ) spelled GE Two with equal parts mineral spirits by weight. Mix thoroughly and apply. 1 oz. each mixed will go a long way. Same thing Lightheart Tents uses. Works great. Before applying I pitch the tent/tarp and leave it under tension for a couple of days before applying. HTH
