Virgin trains have a very nice color scheme(colour-the proper way to spell it in the English language). Train travel is the way to travel and see the countryside & coastal area of a country. It's very relaxing, comfortable, don't have to fight highway traffic, stop to eat, stop to refuel, stop to sleep for the night & stop to go to the bathroom, and you don't have to deal with the hassles of air travel unless it is long distance international air travel.
I had travelled on this route back in 2016 and 2017 during my stay in United Kingdom. While watching this video i still cherish those lovely memories. THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO
My wife and I took this trip last April. We were in standard class all the way but otherwise, this was exactly as I remembered it. Thank you, Mark for bringing back these great memories.
While in Reading, U K, I enjoyed travelling in trains from Reading Station to places like London, Birmingham, Bristol, Portsmouth, Bath and Salisbury. I cherish my travel even today!
Excellent video, enjoyed. Reflecting on my recollection of the same journey in the '70s and '80s biggest difference must be the transformation of Kings Cross, huge improvement. Type quality and variety of trains is also very different. This is a troubled franchise with a history of operators failing, but when it works its great.
Beautiful video; thanks for sharing! Some people say that British Rail is "a mess" since it's been privatized. But Virgin Rail looks great to me, at least from this video.
dave4shmups compared to other European countries, I'd definitely say that British rail is in a complete mess and is ridiculously expensive! I'm amazed how these private companies can get away by charging crazy prices for shit service when ticket prices in Germany and France is substantially lower with much better service!
I find local services to be expensive. Longer distances not too bad. A 40 minute journey into edinburgh for me is £8.60 on a stopping service. If I travel from Edinburgh - Newcastle (1hr 40 no stops) £12-ish...
Kayshrk in italy you can do Milan-Rome (600km) in 3h with the Frecciarossa1000 in second class for 25€, and so much less if you book the travel 3 moths before. Difference? But Trenitalia (with Trenitalia UK) is in the race to do the london-Edimburg and i think it will improvement a service like the one in italy
First class is definitely worth it when you book tickets way in advance. When we rode it two years ago we probably ate 100 pounds worth of food for free as the airplane we had just gotten off had awful choices.
I remember taking this journey (with a few alterations in the middle). First day we travelled to London Euston in the south east in two hours with breakfast I think. Then walked over to London Marylebone and took a two hour journey to Birmingham Moor Street in the west midlands. Walked to Birmingham New Street and did a return journey to a local station for high speed train spotting. Then took an hour journey to Derby in the east Midlands and a one or two hour to London St Pancras (we saw a famous actor on the train). We then took the tube to London Fenchurch Street. We then took an hour journey east which was about 40 miles to Shouberryness and a return journey to Southend about 5 minutes west. Spent a night in Southend (loud nightlife lol). Took a train in the morning from the other Southend terminus to London Liverpool Street. Then took a 2 hour trip to Norwich (100 miles north). Then took a train about 40 miles west to Peterborough. Then took a VTEC train like this one to Newcastle and stayed over night there. Went to see a Tv show place in the morning and a train to Edinburgh. Then took a train to Perth on one side of the Cairgourns and a train to Inverness on the other. Took a train back to Edinburgh and stayed overnight. Next day went to Glasgow (40 miles west) and then a three hour journey to Fort William (saw the tallest mountain in the UK) was planning to stay on longer to see harry potter filming locations but the earlier train we tried to get on was cancelled and we wouldn't have made it for the Sleeper to London Euston. Didn't get much sleep and fell out the bed. Walked to London St Pancras (again) and took a high speed train to Ashford for Eurostar action. Took an hour train to the coastal town of Brighton about 50 miles below London. Got a carrot cake ice cream and took a train to Gatwick Airport (30 miles north) so I could get a Gatwick Express train to London Victoria. Took the tube to London Paddington (had a shower for free as we were sweating from 20 degree weather all week. Took the tube to London St Pancras and Thameslink to Elephant and Castle I think. Then took tube to Paddington and Riviera Sleeper to Penzance (bottom left corner of England). Then took a high speed train about 200 miles east to Exeter and a train to London Waterloo. Took the tube to London Kings Cross and a Grand Central train to York and back. Then stayed overnight in London. Then took a high speed train with silver service a couple hundred miles west to Cardiff in Wales and took a local valleys line and back. Then took a regional train about 150 miles north east to Birmingham New Street again and a high speed train about 100 miles north east to Crewe and our final train back home to Chester.
What is the timespan of this journey? In 1980 I travelled from Birmingham to Edinburgh in 1st class - the old fashioned 4-6 passengers per compartment, and I took sandwiches with me! That trip was about 8 hours.
London to Edinburgh nowadays is usually around 4 hours and 20 minutes on a fast service (which depart on the hour from Kings Cross), whilst the slow services (which depart half an hour either side) take around 4h40m.
What is there to worry about? Britain's railways are the safest in Europe and it's years since there has been a serious crash. Sit back in your comfortable seat and enjoy the beautiful views of the English countryside passing your picture window at two miles per minute!

They did an excellent job of renovating King's Cross, it's a beautiful, spacious station now. I just can't believe it took them so long
I did this trip a couple of months ago - it was fantastic, I just love sitting back and watching the scenery go by.
