The reason why the L3/33 was built was due to desperation on the Italian Fascist party. Not enough raw materials and production capability to amass enough full sized tanks for battle, so they went with amassing mini tanks (tankettes) to supplement the missing numbers of full sized tanks. They soon realized this was a bad idea, and reorganized them to separate roles. The reason why a modern L3/33-type tankette isn't manufactured and deployed is simply because there's no need to. Anything the L3/33 could do is currently being done better by a different vehicle. Also, the Italians have not been under a production chokehold, so they can produce tanks if they need to and the nation who'd most likely be able to produce them (the US) has been fighting insurgencies for the past two decades. The L3/33 is a lot of things, but IED blast survivable is more than likely not one of them. The idea, though, may not be a completely bad idea. I'm thinking of unmanned vehicles. You take the L3/33 as a whole, remove the driver and gunner/TC/radio operator/loader and you've got some space for some electronic brains in there. I think an L3/33-type unmanned fighting vehicle would work great if anyone invested in them. Cheap, powerful, fast.
An unmanned L33 would be cool, more room for a better engine and as you said electronics. Maybe some angled armour underneath in case of an IED but I doubt you could make it survive a mild blast. Still a neat idea!

Personal dream of mine would be to get an old L33 and convert it into a street legal hybrid. I mean technically, it's not heavy enough to tear up the roads and it could be fairly fuel efficient if it was a hybrid. And no one is going to try to muscle up against a tank, even if it's a tankette. Everyone else can have their Tesla's and their Corvettes and their Porsches. You want to ride in style, drive a frigg'n WWII tank down the street and make it everyone else's problem. About selecting edges, I've found that it's easiest to click, hold, and drag to select. Like for some reason precise clicking is nearly impossible, but if you click, hold, and drag, it's like selecting every edge in the area you've "outlined" and it's a lot easier to shift-click drag to unselect what you don't want from a group than it is to try to keep exact clicking a hair line hitbox.

They're cool in that they're compact and can swarm, but they have effectively 0 armor when it comes to going up against 2 pdr and 57mm guns, let alone the later 6 pdr and 75mm guns the allies had. They were also a bit like the US M3 Medium Lee/Grant, a bit of an act of desperation. Italy didn't have enough tanks and their tank production capabilities were anemic. Germany was busy doing their thing and told Italy to deal with it themselves. So with not enough resources and production power to pump out platoon after platoon of tanks, they went with tankettes that they could spit out platoon after platoon of. But that meant it was great at moving a bigger gun than what boots on the ground could heft on their own in to a position faster. However strained resources meant that it was basically only that and any bounce you got from even small arms fire was lucky, even a Thompson sub machine gun firing 45 ACP can penetrate the max 12 mm of armor the L33 had. Only problem beyond that is that it's technically a product of Fascism, d*mn Mussolini. Don't get me wrong. I like the tankette as well, but if I had to chose a vehicle to go out into a battlefield with, this would not be my choice.
There's a technique to make custom mantlets, I think you could find it on youtube somewhere. Iirc its actually quite easy and actually also helps out a *lot* with being able to fine tune the traverse limits. Basically a sideways turret, so the turret ring is vertical. It has to be a specific direction or else the controls will be inverted, I can't remember if it was left or right though.

Yes but then the wiesel is a rocket type tank with quite a different perpose, tho i think the unmanned l3/33 would be better in that case

Modern italian tanks looks like all the others, for example the c1 Ariete (Italy Main battle tank) is very similiar to the english Challenger 2
