Hi. My name is Eliot Wien from NYC, Other great Singles with The Professionals are A Merry Jingle by The Greedies with Jones and Cook and Phil Lynott. Another sing;e is Justifiable Homicide by Dave Goodman & Friends with Jones & Cook. The Original single of I Love Rock and Roll by Joan Jett also has Jones & Cook. My late friend Alan Merrill wrote that song. Now, if you're looking for a great punk single, check out Real Fun by Ten Pole Tudor. Jones & Cook are not on it, but one of my favorites. Also, there was a Professionals Flexi Disc. CHEERS From New York City!
Thanks for a noce overview of this great singles band. Does anyone know if the band name comes from the British 1970’s TV show? One of the leads, Martin Shaw, shares the Jonesy perm.
Other Jones & Cook records are Black Leather by The Runaways, You Don't Own Me, and Don't Abuse me by Joan Jett, and they also appear on The Avengers album(with Pink Cover) I think they also appeared on a KRAUT Record. - Eliot Wien, NYC The Professionals played a club in Brooklyn, NY called Zappa's on Cortelyou Road. I was also at The Checquered Past concert at The Ritz in NYC. Not too many people there. I was standing up front by Steve Jones. I was also at the Neurotic Outsiders show at Webster Hall(Formerly The Ritz) in NYC. I was standing and talking to Glen Matlock who was in the audience. I flew to England to see The Sex Pistol's Jubilee Concert at The Crystal Palace hangin with Rusty Egan from The Rich Kids by the Soundboard. The New Version of The Professionals was scheduled to appear at na Rock Club in Ammityville, Long Island, NY, bur due to Covid, they never played. That club went out of business. I was also at the First New york Public Image show at The Palladium. It was the original lineup with Jah Wobble and Keith Levene.
Your title nails the debate off the bat - The Professionals were finally a ''professional'' musical project, against the recent memories of cash from chaos...
Duncan Sanderson & Twink were from the Pink Fairies who Cook & Jones would visit the Pinks from time to time & trade licks. Twink once said that he rehearsed 'Do it or 'Psychedelic Punkaroo' with Cook & Jones and it sounded fantastic. Much better than what was released on the Do It 12" you have there. I think that Twink got John Hodge and Duncan Sandy Sanderson out of bed early one morning and said we're going into the studio. They said when. Twink said "Now!" 😁
Mike...you said you think you had seen a T-shirt of "The Magnificent" sleeve...well Rob is wearing one when Steve Jones played with us during "One two three" & "Just another dream" ! He bought it at the Professionals concert in April '82 when we went to see them...about 9 months before we met him !
Regarding 1-2-3, a surprise hearing it's The Avengers - Second to None, here for those curious th-cam.com/video/SZHv6t0pF0A/w-d-xo.html which didn't come out until 1983 when the Avengers LP came out, but recorded in 1978 by Steve Jones.
If Jones had been the Pistols vocalist instead of Rotten it would not have worked. Jones was much better on lead guitar and terrace singalong backing vocals.
Professionals are probably on par [in punk/ new wave history] with Generation X: certainly competent enough with good guitar work but essentially nondescript and lacking in personality.
Paul Cook did not sing Lonely Boy, Steve Jones did. Paul did the Silly Thing vocals on The Swindle LP. Steve Jones did the vocals on the single.
Great review. Just Another Dream was a superb single.

the Cook/ Jones recordings on the Swindle album are pretty poor even if Friggin in the Riggin is still hilarious, my friend.
The Pistols are /were and always will be nothing without John..........and it ended in 1978
