What do you think are the 25 most important video games ever made? Which ones absolutely have to be on the list? And what criteria should we use to decide? Let's discuss and shape the ultimate list together!

Cool list, also shoutout to the classic Ragnarok, the sheer amount of artistic value in this game was savage. The sprites, maps, HUD, omfg the soundtrack, the combination of 2D and 3D enviroments, everything was perfect. Modern 3D graphics fail to recreate the beauty of Ragnarok because the artists behind it learned and used the limitations of their medium to the games advantage.
Great video! PS: Sent u an email hope it didn't get marked as spam

Ragnarok, that's a good idea. Ps: i got your email, I'll get back soon!

You've made a weird twist there - first you introduce the idea of the best artist and then you go on to list the best creation

Really plausible criteria and therefore great choices! Thanks for the great video : )

Never thought I would receive this opportunity.

In all seriousness, great video :)
I'm surprised you didn't mention Super Mario 64 or Skyrim. SM64 was a big leap for 3D platforming. Skyrim was also massively influential, if only because Bethesda kept rereleasing it every other month it seems, you just couldn't get around it. Another one might be Pokémon GO, which caused us all to finally touch grass (heh).

Yeah there are a few more that should have been on the list:
    - Final Fantasy 7 - definitely the most important JRPG of all time
    - Starcraft - the most important RTS of all time
    - World of Warcraft - the most important MMO of all time
    - Skyrim - I don't really like it as much nowadays, but its massive impact is undeniable
    - Halo 2 - the game that basically started online gaming for consoles on a massive scale
    - Assassin's Creed was definitely very impactful on modern open world games, even if for the wrong reasons

I would argue you can't have StarCraft if you don't have Command and Conquer, and you can't have Halo without having Goldeneye. And so those two probably push the newer games out of the list

I'm starting to think that viewing games as art is fundamentally flawed/unhelpful when making and criticizing games.

Hello mate, great video, please keep it up:
Just a critique: I would, subjectively, argue. Yes you hit a lot of the big points, but i think you lost your way on the final 5. I think there's some recency bias going on. These games are wildly popular, and successful, but have they truly innovated? (perhaps Baldurs Gate 3 is an exception, but that remains to be seen as the future is not here yet). I find it very hard to see how games 20 to 24 are more Important that Final fantasy 7 & Command and Conquer (these are two huge cornerstones i feel you missed). And to a slightly lesser extent Goldeneye 64.
I suppose popular and important are Venn diagram-esque in how synonymous but distinct they are, I would make an argument for Demon's souls being more important than Dark Souls, but i can understand the logic.
Some other games not as pivotal as the aforementioned i think probably deserved a spot over some in your final third are ICO/Shadow the colossus, Resident Evil 1/2, Abes odyssey/exodus.
But again, great list, just some subjective criticism. But I would genuinely like the hear the rationale behind not including FF7 and C&C but the 20-24 games make the cut

This is well put video, and generally well thought out. But trying to pick only 25 in a medium like this is either impossible or bound to lead to criticism.
For example, while Doom was massively important at the time, it has been dwarfed by the impact of the Call of Duty franchise.
There isn't a single racing game, not even GT2 or Mario Kart, despite how extremely popular racing games have been.
Baldur's Gate III has competition in term of word counts and complexity: Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
Metal Gear Solid was great, but the modern stealth is an ersatz of what it used to be, being now more closely related to Assassin's Creed, which we wouldn't have without Prince of Persia.
And speaking of what some people call cinematic platformers, Tomb Raider?
And Koudelka, Blood Omen and Soul Reaver all had better voice acting than Metal Gear.
Tony Hawk is the only sport game in the list, but hasn't been as important as Fifa and its microtransactions.
Or how about Oblivion and the horse armor?
World of Warcraft or any other old MMO? Heck, in France Dofus might have been more important than WoW, with a cartoon, comics, movies, a second MMO, multiple MO spin offs, a publishing house...
    Princess Maker and Tokimeki Memorial?
    Fate?
    The Sims?
Some of the first AAA video games, Wing Commander III and IV, feature Mark Hamil?
I'm sure there are huge games I'm missing, like Angry Birds or other mobile games I haven't even heard of.
I appreciate the last words on bias.

The fact that neither marathon nor halo 2 show up on this list is a big miss. Granted it could be just bias towards non-multiplayer games, but those two have had monumental impact on games as a whole.
Marathon gave us our point-and-click aiming/shooting and halo 2 blew out online matchmaking in a way that most games to this day still echo.

    • @BreakingZGame

Thanks for mentioning them! I'll take note for a future video :)

    • @Windraesa
      @Windraesa 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

I think Goldeneye had a bigger impact than both those games. As for marathon in particular, I've been gaming since 1989-ish, and I watch a LOT of video game video essays, and i'd literally never heard of it until this comment, so I think that speaks volumes.

@@Windraesa we're dancing around definitions. cultural significance/awareness vs tech impact. i think a game that revolutionized the mechanics around an entire genre, even if it isnt widely known, may be the bigger impactor here.

Rather disappointed that there were none of the pillars of RPGs in the list. No Wizardry, no Ultima, no Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy?
Also missing from the list: Space Invaders, Pac Man, Colossal Cave, Adventure, Civilization, SimCity, King's Quest, Prince of Persia...
The list has a HUGE blind spot for several genres of games (not just individual important games, but entire classes) which are deeply important in the development of the art form. Not a single rhythm game in sight, only Tetris to represent puzzle games, nothing from the arcades except Street Fighter II, no RTSes, no MMORPGs, no adventure games, nothing at all from the SNES or Sega Genesis (unless you want to count SF2 or Doom ports)... There's a heavy bias towards more recent games, and only two (Rogue and Pokemon) that are turn-based.
I think maybe a broader net needs to be cast if you're going to find the most historically important games out there! Innovation hasn't just been happening for the last two decades, and just because a genre is all but defunct now doesn't mean it doesn't have historical significance to the medium.

There was a couple of games that I was a little surprised that didn't get a mention on this list. One is Wasteland. That one was the first for post apocolyptic rpgs that would later spawn the Fallout series. The other is Mystery House. It was the first ever graphical game for PCs.

    • @wolfen26

@@BreakingZGame Yeah, Mystery House was created by Ken and Roberta Williams, the founders of Sierra Online Games. That was their first published title. They went on to create the Kings Quest, Space, Quest, Police Quest series and Phantasmagoria. They are basically the grandmother and grandfather of PC gaming.

@@BreakingZGame I think you would find Ultima IV especially interesting if you're not already familiar. It was one of the first, if not the first, game to try and have a morality system. IV and VII especially still are listed in many older gamers top 100 of all time lists. Younger gamers mostly don't even no they exist, but still rank highly the games inspired by them.
