Twisted Sister is one of the most beloved bands from the 80s heavy metal era, and this is one of their two songs that gained massive mainstream popularity - the other one being "I wanna rock", the follow-up single to "We're not gonna take it". "I wanna rock" also came with a promo video featuring Mark Metcalf, the actor playing the unlikable "Douglas C" in this video. Dee Snider, the lead singer and songwriter in Twisted Sister wanted Metcalf to portray an older version of the character he played in the classic raunchy college comedy "Animal house". The element of hyper-violence was inspired by that in old-school cartoons like "Tom & Jerry" and "Bugs Bunny". The success was massive, and the accompanying album "Stay hungry" - the band's third - has to date sold over six million copies. The band's crazy make-up and attire was heavily influenced by classic acts like Alice Cooper, New York Dolls, David Bowie, Slade and even Twisted Sister's personal friends and fellow New Yorkers Kiss. The band called it a day in 2016, following the unexpected passing of drummer AJ Pero. On their farewell tour, they used the services of their friend Mike Portnoy - a legendary drummer, best known from prog metal behemoths Dream Theater. Dee Snider was, and remains, one of the most well-spoken and intelligent musicians in the heavy metal community, as well as a positive role model in any ways. At the age of 68, he still sports an amazing build after a whole life of no drugs but plenty of hours in the gym - coincidentally, he also still has his massive mane of hair. He is happily married since over 40 years, and, despite his colorful vocabulary with a great love of profanities, is also a devoted Christian. He's also a highly successful songwriter outside of the band's perimeters - believe it or not, but he contributed a song to the multi-million selling Christmas album by Céline Dion. A man very much worth admiring, even to people who are not heavy metal devotees like me 🙂
Oh yeah - I almost forgot: as you may have guessed, Dee Snider's dad was a detestable bully, and the direct inspiration for the "We're not gonna take it"-version of Douglas C. So the song is pretty much Dee's way of giving abused kids a word of encouragement.
