  • This seems like the beginning of the path that will lead to the NCAA losing the strong hold they had over student athletes for too long now.

Football should go the route of elite junior hockey in Canada. Open to players 16-20 years of age, no affiliation with scholastics or educational institutions , the players attend high school as per norm and college part time if they choose to. Players are paid, can have agents, and are given scholarship funds for time spent in the system which they can use towards furthering education post hockey.

@@thatsright4194 that’s just not the case, or anywhere close. You’re describing a handful of players each year.
The vast, vast majority understand there’s a 98% chance they’re *not* playing in the NFL, this is an education they’re paying for with their bodies, and they want the education.
Of course, there’s superstars who understand school doesn’t matter for them. There’s also kids who are delusional and think they’re getting to the league when they’re not, and don’t take their education seriously.
But we’re still only talking about a few guys on a few teams.
Essentially the entire football team at middling D1 schools (and everywhere beneath them in competitive level) is aware that at best one or two players on that team are going to the league, this is the end of their football road, and they better take advantage of what they’re being given.

That model would be hard and unworkable. A majority of these college teams are the “professional” sports of the state. Take Alabama for example. The Crimson Tigers are the state sponsored professional team of Alabama (same for Auburn). Remove the affiliation to the state tax payer’s money and these teams wouldn’t exist. This exists for A LOT of the NCAA Div-1 teams. Your model is a good model, but that is how these states/cities/etc., get by with having a professional team.

Question 🙋🏻‍♂️ only college football makes money and most of that revenue also goes to fund all other sports. Women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball etc etc. Will paying football players mean the end of other athletic programs within an institution?

    • @brianhalligan9268
      @brianhalligan9268 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Unlikely. People assume that paid NCAA means that 1. All money comes from the school and school budgets are super tight 2. All the college football player (or basketball players) would be paid similar rate to a pro athlete. This is not the case schools make lots of money and having a diverse campus (including a variety of athletic opportunities) is a big part what makes colleges destinations for perspective students. Now it’s likely football players would make more because the sport brings in more money (the phrase fair market rate is key) but the school itself will likely not be the real big source of money for say the next Trevor Lawrence that will likely be from endorsements and such. If most if these schools have the money to make coaches the highest paid statewide employee they have the money to fund their other sports programs. Also things like title 9 exist which could come into play.

Most those other kids (outside of football and Womans/mens basketball) have to pay for their school anyways. Check out scholarship limits. The money from the revenue sports goes to administration.

How much does a college education cost? If youre not good enough to go pro then you ARE in fact getting paid and if you leave earlyto go pro then you should have to pay BACK the college for years you were there

NCAA profited off of student-athletes. NCAA should be the one responsible for paying student-athletes education/meals/stipend/etc
    .
Instead, college students pay an enormous tuition to pay for student-athlete education housing etc. college students do not profit off of college athletes.
Hopefully the consequence of this ruling leads to a reevaluation of the third parties (students) that are most affected yet the least regarded.

At least let the players make money off their name and likeness. When the schools have to pay, which they should be, the issue will be Title IX. Will a female rowing athlete have to be paid the same amount as a Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields?

Let the free market reign, if a college wants to pay a player then so be it. If Bama wants to pay a top tier HS QB $150k a year (or w/e number) + free education awesome I do not care. Colleges don't want that, because right now its cheap to get talent.

Does the educational related count toward food? I felt sad every time I heard from a player after turning pro, saying they were hungry, or had to eat cheap junk food as a student athlete because they didn't have money (to support 5000 calories per day burn rate).

Percentage of gate money split evenly among ALL players might be the simplest. Or TV revenue. But split it among all players in the NCAA. If you want to pay more to your players? Reduce the rosters. BUT! Players need to give up the scholarships or opt out of the pay system. Just a thought…..

The NCAA says it’s okay that I a 100 pound, 5’2 female athlete can be beat by a 6’1 230 pound “woman” on the weightlifting, LaCrosse, Soccer and gymnastics fields.
    That:
“You’re not training hard enough to beat that “woman”.
