After Hours, AstroWorld and Because the Internet are three of my favorites. I know Nathan Zed talked about this, but creating a whole world for your listeners is an amazing way to promote an album. It elevates the music in a huge way
I find it funny how arguably the single BEST example is almost never mentioned: the rollout for Trench by twenty one pilots was absolutely undefeatable
Boards of Canada's rollout for Tomorrow's Harvest was INSANE. They made a huge ARG, with the answers in record stores all across the world, and the clues were hidden in Adult Swim bumpers and NPR announcements. An insane amount of planning and cooperation had to be done just for it to exist.
I still remember that one guy posting on the boards of canada subreddit "hey uhh so I got this weird record called ------ / XXXXXX / ------ / ------ / ------" and everyone thought the guy was bullshitting until he played it and everyone lost their minds
Nine Inch Nails: Year Zero..LONG arg, before the term existed.: including flash drives hidden in venue bathrooms, irl murals, dozens of websites, noises that created pictures when seen through a spectrograph, stencils for real world graffiti ,phone numbers to call, codes hidden on T-shirts, plants on NIN fan sites, members of said sites being listed as "dead" and "captured" on one YZ site, winners being driven up a mountain in blacked out busses, and more. That's IT.
Surprised you didn't mention Tyler's Call Me If You Get Lost. I feel like the rollout and general aesthetic of the album was much more involved than Igor (which I also loved).
Whole Lotta Red's rollout will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first time I was stalking forums every day looking for new info or leaks. Honorable mention to Eternal Atake too.
2:15 the fun thing about the Levels Of Concern website-game was that it was basically a "album rollout rollout" party. For the most part, it had nothing to do with Scaled and Icy, until a video on the USB drives sent to those who got to the final code in time (not me) had hidden text that translated to "Clancy Is Dead", an anagram of "Scaled and Icy". The whole thing was an experience. I still remember seeing Clique Twitter struggle on Code 19 (the music sheet "hip alfresco" one) for more than an hour, when it took me a brief glance for me to realize "oh it's solfege cipher".
I think the rollout might be my favorite part of album releases. Nowadays there's not much effort put into pre-promotions, but when an artist goes all out, follows a concept, there's promo with trucks, mysterious outdoors, it definitely makes me more hyped. i wish we could go back to this instead of random tiktok challenges and no effort from record labels :[
In 2021, Jeff Rosenstock announced on April Fools' Day that he would release a new album called SKA DREAM (a ska version of his previous album NO DREAM). A lot of us thought it was just a joke for obvious reasons, but then he proceeded to release the album on 4/20 and now I can't decide which of the two albums to listen to half the time. Thanks Jeff!
Injury reverse self titled was an awesome roll out. The sit down with a bunch of college students listening threw the first time in one take. Pretty great

5:48 man this explains so much. I’ve had this one Apple account I’ve held onto for years now that used to belong to my parents, and every time I signed into it I’ve had this album show up in iTunes, and it showed up again after I bought Apple Music. I never knew what this was cuz I knew my parents weren’t listening to that shit
One of my favorite album rollouts has to be Miley Cyrus' bangerz. The album isn't even particularly groundbreaking but the cultural reset that was the release of the we can't stop and breaking ball music videos is something that has yet to be replicated by anybody else.
Thanks for uploading today. Your videos make my days better always I know that it’s hard to animate these videos but keep going. Keep making good content.
it's probably because you weren't aware of them but i would've LOVED if you talked about the album rollouts for underscores' Wallsocket, Madeon's Good Faith and Porter Robinson's nurture, especially underscore's one because there were A LOT of things going on it was super fun, loved the video either way
I agree that Tomorrow's Harvest was nuts. I loved it. And Bowie turned his DEATH into an art project. Still gotta go with NIN: Year Zero, though, as the absolute deepest, most complex, and, unquestionably, the one with the most to it.
Hey, you should also do a video about song/album titles! Over the last few years they've gotten pretty creative, with their different styling (all caps, special letters, etc) and how the titles have evolved from simple ideas to some extra long and oddly specific naming. I think it would make for a neat video!
Endless is on Apple Music as one long video. The physical version are different but the video version still gets the job done as it's like 98% the same
Norman f***ing rockwell will forever be my fav album rollout. the trailer, the visuals, the themes are so nostalgic and vintage and captivating. i remember being so excited for it to be released.
Frank Ocean to me had the one of the most interesting rollouts I’ve ever experienced with Blonde. There was so much mystery behind it. There was so many theories then someone said they heard from someone in a bar that someone was teaching Frank how to build a staircase. Then people were looking for the warehouse from pictures. Then the live stream started and for a week people were glued just looking for what might happen next. When endless finally dropped, there was also the magazines and physical merch drops at random stores. Everyone thought that was it but the theories didn’t stop since Nikes dropped and he said “I have two versions” then the next day the second album drops. It was insane to me how careful to me he had to be to hide all of it from his label etc.
Lil Nas X has got to have one of the best rollouts for Montero. He had a full "show", his pregnancy phase and so much more. Best roll-out I've seen in a while
i remember german band Deichkind just randomly dropping coordinates and a timestamp on their facebook page and taking them down after 2 hours. if you arrived, you got a free concert of them performing some songs from their then new album "Wer sagt denn das?" as well as some of their classics.
I think we should give more credit to the creative directors and the people making the cool shoots for the artist without them they wouldn’t have any of those music videos or photo shoots ❣️ not saying artist don’t work hard but it’s def not all them let’s not forget 💋
Twenty One Pilots' Trench was the absolute best album rollout I've ever seen. From their absolute radio silence to the cryptic messages, the weird images, the hidden website, the strange diary entries, the characters, the city, the lore, the singles, the music videos, EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT. FLAWLESSLY EXECUTED ROLLOUT. How did they even pull it off is beyond me.
One of the biggest fumbles recently IMO, was the Van Weezer album. They dropped the first single in 2019 and then didn't release the album until 2021. They even released another album a few months before it.
im not sure if you meant this in a negative towards the album but Taboo dropping in 3 ep’s was good imo. The album is split into 3 acts with 3 different sounds that mix to make a concept. i think it’s a great way to do it. but this was one of the first rollouts i really was into so maybe i’m biased.
ummm, nathan zed already did this video :/

what's your intro song?
Can you do Lets Start Here from yachty in 60 secs?
Also nice slowed version of One Beer by MF Doom
