    In my opinion what makes Guardiola so consistently dominant is his importance on good passing. It is the foundation to everything and he is fanatic about training it thoroughly. Just think about it, if you don't receive the ball perfectly in motion on the foot that you are strong with and moving towards, then it will take you a bit of time to handle such ball giving the opponent more opportunities to win the ball in their pressing, you might even have a bad first touch because of a poor pass and the opponent can grab the ball. Guardiolas importance on near perfect passing is basically risk management and giving his players more time to think about what to do with the ball next and focus on the opponent to stay calm while getting pressed since passing just because second nature to his players. You might say "they only play short passes" the completion rate for Man City this season is the highest on average in all categories from small - medium - long distance passing which just lays such a strong foundation for being consistent. You might say they only played 4 games so far, then let me tell you that this fact is true for the last 7 season, they have been the best in passing period which then just leaves extremely little room for the opponent to punish you cause they are so well trained at passing, in the end it is literally the foundation of the game.

    Lewis is just a new position Pep created. Plays like an inverted full back but is actually a runner to by pass the mid block. Has license to go forward to overlap any space in that split second the mid block loses shape. It is Pep's solution to teams crowding the centre and letting City play wide.

    JJ Bull was right about Slott's Liverpool and about teams eventually finding them out; he was just wrong about when. Nottingham Forest tactically outwitted Slott's Liverpool. I would add that I think this will be Liverpool's season; they will struggle against well-defended teams as Slott failed to beat José Mourinho four times and also failed to beat Diego Simeone twice. If a manager fails to beat these two guys or well-drilled defensive sides, I always judge whether or not they have what it takes to be a top manager in the best league in the world.

    • @SKa-tt9nm
      @SKa-tt9nm 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      Milan outwitted slot too… for about 10 minutes. Milan took advantage of the fact that they had a 6 that could receive the ball and pass it without giving it away.
      Then slot told TAA to bomb forward as much as possible and dealt with Milan’s attack effectively with a back 3. That eliminated the spaces in midfield Milan had taken advantage of. The result was dominance.
      Your self indulgent paragraph notes that teams adjusted to Liverpool but somehow never takes into account that slot is one of the most tactically flexible managers in the world. Making adjustments is his bailiwick.

The other clubs have dominated spending within the last five years your right . Now, all of that was in accordance with FFP would I care? No. Even though I’m a Arsenal fan if they won fair and square then all good. United isn’t too far behind maybe 100-150M off from spending since 2008. But the difference is, United is a huge club. They bring in so much when in comes to sponsorships and the like. City is getting deals from the same people who own them. There’s a reason why it wasn’t sitting right with people (though I admit there are people who are salty that are joining in). If City gets convicted to these charges, I think it’s a huge blemish on the future of football. It’s only natural that if you make more money, then you should spend. But there’s a reason why Arsenal slowed down on spending last transfer window. They knew where the FFP limit was. City and Chelsea definitely need to be investigated. Everyone has to be on the same playing field, and if they don’t take action then just remove FFP. There’s honestly no point

    For me peps tactics don't matter it's the tempo with which he will play this season that will concern me
    If they don't up the tempo alot more than they did last season
    They'll have a lot of 0-0 matches against low blocks this season cuz they don't make defenses uncomfortable
    With all the organization in football now teams need chaos now more than ever to make defenses uncomfortable
    Saw it against inter they only got closer to scoring when they upped the tempo
    And drove at the defense and didn't slow things down

    Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I saw something similar from Toni Kroos in the Euros for Germany. Picked up space deep in his half, on the wing almost like a left back and was pinging passes in different directions. I think Pep found that useful but tweaked it so KDB can be more effective in attack as well. Also Kroos' primary role was as a 6 in the Euros whereas De Bruyne is playing a freer 8 role, I think that's why he drops well into the space between the fullback and the winger and it also helps make the pitch bigger for playmaker supreme to pick out runners and he has some fast runners this season with Doku, Haaland and Savinho.

    So happy Pep gave up those ridiculous tactics from last season. That wingback system with a back was a mess and we were so open defensively, that every team I could think had several great chances to score on the counter. For example, we conceded 133%+ more goals from the counter attack last season than we did the season before; with 6 PL games to go last season, we had already matched or exceeded the total number of goals conceded in each of the 3 previous seasons in their entirety; we had the worst ranked defense in the league against the counter attack.
    The risk we took on sure did not seem be countered by whatever upside was granted. I love Pep and I know this might be harsh, but I could argue that the City squad won the PL last season in spite of Pep and not because of him as has been the case previously. For anyone who disagrees, a perfect comparative example that illustrates my point would be to look at the last games we played vs RM last season vs the treble season.
    In 2023 when we went to the Bernabeau, Pep went conservative with his defense: flat back 4 and the game was tied 1-1 and then in the second leg when we smashed them, he went a back 3 while inverting Stones. This past season, and given all the defensive problems his wingback system had, especially with the counter attacks, he decides to play the same super aggressive WBs and a back 2 against arguably the best counter attacking team in the world. Not to mention, even with Walker injured, he still had Akanji (who I think is one of our best defenders but no WB) play as a WB and push up past the 1/2 way line vs Vini Jr. Let that sink in. Akanji above the 1/2 way line vs the best LW in the world. Make it make sense. And so is it any wonder that of the 4 total goals we conceded, 3 came down the right flanks and all were on counter attacks? For me, I think Pep's refusal or inability or whatever to adapt his tactics is was ultimately led to us losing vs RM. We were def the better overall team, and what makes it worse, is that during the treble season, Pep was so richly rewarded for his ability to adapt his tactics (as shown in the RM games during the treble season) and yet he did the complete opposite last season.
    In the end, I am just hopeful and praying that he stays away from the back 2 with WBs this season...

    As a city fan, city is very vulnerable in squad depth. No replacement of key players like Rodri, Haaland or KDB. We are 1-2 injuries away from getting kicked on our face. Hope we sign new players soon

    • @Akan123
      @Akan123 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Haaland is the only valid worry tbh, you can play without Rodri with a bit of formation Change as he's done in the fiirst 3 games of the season. KDB less so of course you want him in the team always but with Foden who hasn't even statted this season it isn't as big a blow before mentioning B. Silva & Gundogan who can all do a job as creators & or as Goalscorers

    Then let him take over a team in National League. Is he a good coach,, yes. Is he helped by the money that he has available to buy the best players, yes. The same could be said for Alex Ferguson with Man Utd. Its easy to coach really good players isn't it? Is he better than Steve Cooper, or Marcelo Bielsa or Roy Keane - who took good teams from the Championship to the Premier League? Would be a good debate.

    Lovely analysis as usual. However, a few silly errors: Arsenal are NOT playing "four centre backs" in any sense 😂 They really don't play that shape and one of the fullbacks is usually very attacking. Rice is also not used as a 'defensive' player anymore but has advanced into the 8 role.
    Liverpool have already varied their approach quite widely in their opening three matches. Slot did not use the same structure or possession strategy. 🤔
