- Peter Singer discusses Hegel's conception of freedom and some of its potential dangers with Bryan Magee after being asked about Hegel's conception of the state as a rational, organic society. This comes from a 1987 program on Hegel and Marx, which can be found here: • Hegel & Marx - Bryan M...

I am really getting so old, I recall watching this fine series in my teens. Loved Magee -he would stop - and very often sum up the main points succinctly and in a more understandable way. .
Yes, Magee-hee was great. He was as succulent as he was succinct.
@@OngoGablogian185 Now folks are going to think wtf is that pedantic knob (you) on about.
howzit goin mate. slap another shrimp on on the barbie?
hmm. yes. indeed. jolly good show, old chap.
Philosophy.. what would I do without you...
Alright, alright come on, there’s no need to get philosophical about it..
But Hegel did not subscribe to a rationalism that was based on non contradiction. Everything sublates into its opposite in a process Hegel called 'aufgehoben', such that lower wants and desires are preserved in the higher ones. Another way to think of this problem is that if you knew what the proper wants and desires of a people are, well then it eventually turns out those people are not free. Furthermore Hegel did not have a distinct view on freedom but preserved Fichte's and Kant's objectivity. Exploitation, in terms of spiritual freedom, is meant to be overcome through integration and fashioned into something constructive, not to be realized then disposed of.
This is what I understood:
- Not enough freedom in rational state of Hegel
- Hegel's definition of freedom is different and subtle
- But my definition is also about freedom
- But still libertarians can't guarantee Hegel's definition of freedom, what you gonna do...
Consulting Hegel on freedom is like consulting Alec Baldwin on gun safety
Yeah that kind of works 'Someone is responsible ... but I know it's not me' - ultimately pretty Hegelian 😹
Hegel would you please go out and look for a job?
-Whyyyyyy?
Last time I was this early, it was still "only two weeks to flatten muh curve"
Hegel should've been drafted
The anti-thesis to which is that he was too busy thinking about how to synthesise his way out of it!
Ain’t it funny how someone from the same country as Rupert Murdoch says “what you want may be being manipulated by someone other than yourself”. ???
Well, this comment section...exists
Rational individual, if there is such subject like and individual at all ? Hell ! No ! Freedom is a disease without cure. The want for freedom is purely emotional.
The atheistic materialism of Marx and Hegel is self-refuting.
Hegel was neither an atheist, nor a materialist. Marx has inverted Hegel.
Wow, what a profound statement. Are you a professional philosopher?
Hegel wasn’t an atheist or a materialist, but good on you for outing yourself as a member of the radical far right
@@Karamazov9 Actually whilst it’s fairly reasonable that he was not a materialist his Philosophy did form the basis of several later fairly catastrophic materialistic adjuncts to his philosophy.
Hegel's work can be seen as more spiritual than strictly religious, as his philosophical system emphasizes the importance of the Absolute Spirit or Geist as the driving force behind reality.
This Absolute Spirit is presented as an abstract and conceptual entity that unfolds dialectically throughout history, leading to the progressive realization of freedom and self-awareness.
He also has a secondhand car in great nick, if you’re willing to buy it?
@@hominidaetheodosia You haven’t indicated why materialism is “catastrophic”?
Sincerely, a Marxist
