I never underestimated them. “Love Over Gold” was the very first CD I bought when I bought my first CD player - GBP 300 for the player and GBP 20 was the going price for a CD back in 1985.

For the first time ever, I found myself "spit-taking" over the lyrics as the song progressed.
Some songs get better w/ age. In this case for "worsening" reasons, but I find myself beaming w/ a smile while listening. A sense of humor and rock and roll are the two greatest commodities we have.

Dire Straits' definitive album for sure. Masterpiece . 80s were just incredible.... as good as the 60s IMHO. I don't even think people who grew up during that time remember how many great bands there were... all at once. It's rare to find anything decent today... but during the 80s (especially the first half of the decade) there was almost too much to choose from. It was hard to keep up with all of it. Dire Straits was among the cream of the crop though... and this album is their magnum opus.

Almost 40 years ago Dire Straits released the fabulous album Love Over Gold, which I bought right away as the dedicated danish teenage-fan I was.
I have always loved the sharp lyrics in this particular song!
As I grew up I slowly realised that many countries governments and regimes, the media and huge companies all over the World, have interests that doesn't aligne with what most humans wants and dream about - deep in their hearts.
Somehow along the way we got off track: enviroment damage, clima changes, over-consumption, wars...and now COVID is sweaping the planet, these lyrics are more true than ever before!
I hope for mankind to wake up and together do what we're abel to and meant to do:
Live in peace and harmony with each other on our beautiful planet.
    Love from Camilla in Denmark

This song seems to be dead accurate social commentary on life in the U.K. in the late 70s, early eighties, despite how prescient it seems in describing some aspects of our current situation. Really, a kind of historical document of the time in which it was created, a perspective, if you will...thanks for posting it. I had forgotten just how great a song this was, along with many more from it's era!

I will be cured of " Industrial Disease " as of September 7th, 2014 when I will retire aged 59¾ y.o.; been in the work-force since '72. Fabulous lyrics, especially " ther're pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind " etc. Even more-so true today. Love the boppy lead Organ, jusxtaposed to the crunchy Guitar. I've been a DS/MK fan since 78. This album is def one of my favorites, I wore out both the cassette and album. This is classic Knopfler writing/wordsmithing lyrics. I'll bet I'm one of the few yanks who knows what "spanner" is. I worked with a bunch of kiwis at a factory making windsurfers back in the late 70's so I had to learn their terminology for things ie; spanner etc...Crazy fuckers lol

Dire Straits never disappoint and Mark is a wizard: I think he got his skill from Apollo himself: his guitar is divine; his lyrics are refined, sophisticated, full of mystery and memories: melodies are stunning and his voice is the right one for what he sings. In one word: perfect! We love you Sir Mark Knopfler! ❤
