Though they may not match up to the current top players given their age, I found this match more entertaining than most matches today. More character and fun, less robotic like play.
I also feared another pointless exhibition... it was fantastic to see some serious tt out of them :) Too bad Waldner missed at least 2 epic shots in this match ;)
I was told that they will play for real in the final rounds. Early rounds may be exhibition when it's against legends that are not in Table Tennis shape like Jiang Jialiang, Kurcharski, etc. Appelgren, Persson, Waldner, Saive are all in Table Tennis shape so they will play real matches against each other. Anyone else they bring in will probably not be in Table Tennis shape, although there may be an exception here or there depending on what city they go to.
@@exoticfn1004 What kind of leg injury does Mikael Appelgren have? I'm a rehabilitation and Muscular Specialist as my profession. I understand how to fix just about any injury. If it's a chronic problem he's having, I will offer to help him understand how to fix it.
Waldner won the 1997 world championships without losing one set. 21-0. The englishman Matthew Syed said: "that the worlds elit was Waldners slaves." :> In Olympic games -92 he lost one set.
Me too I love it when they play real table tennis. I hate veteran stars to be exploited as circus acts. When they play for real, it looks real and it looks human too.
You know what, he's still better at killing a ball than Boll or (on the forehand side) Ovcharov. That's why he could beat the Chinese, and why the Germans usually can't. European table tennis badly needs another Waldner. Even though he's pushing 50, the touch and tactical brain are still amazing. If he'd managed to beat Ma Lin in 99 (and he was so close), and won that tournament, there'd be no doubt in my mind he's the best ever. As it is I think you could make a case for various players: Wang Liqin, Ma Lin, Wang Hao, Zhang Jike, limited to the ones I've seen. I just know, for sheer touch, I prefer watching him to any of them.
It's interesting to watch these legend players play against each other ,though a little bit too slow & soft in attacking, still maintain their steady pace...
+Tevin Tech: That's not how it works, you only become a legend after time has passed. Current great players aren't legends, they are only possible future ones.
@@ktosomcosom19 I don't know if I would call them legends, the only one among them I know much about is Boll, who to be fair isn't that far off from being a legend, maybe he will be in the future.
Awesome!! These legends TT is whole lot more easier to follow and plus you get to see the all time greats including the one himself Waldner. JMS always gave Waldner problems during there prime...
The best match that i 've seen. Lengends still inspire us to play table tennis. If you want to be healthy at that ages like them, let 's play table tennis!
Without Waldner, Saive and Gaitin, game of table tennis is losing its charm... they are always legends. look at Waldner's attack with serve, still elegant... Thanks for your uploading, remind me of 1992. Fantastic floor colour of court, super comfortable for watching, ITTF should consider this colour for all match. why not?
Just watched an old Saive vs Waldner match from 1993 before this video and comparing the two is interesting. Waldner is always trying to stick close to the table which puts Saive on the backfoot constantly. In the old days Saive had the speed and agility to keep up, but with age it is clearly a more difficult style. Saive is in good shape this match but still it's not enough.
I think this tournament is not exhibition, both off them still difficult to beat, it's true. First player in my country is beaten by Jean in zen-noh tokyo champion 2014. Excellent legend
It’s amazing how Saive looks like he hasn’t aged at all - doesn’t have the usual belly that men of his age have Waldner on the other hand does have a little bit of that
Waldner impresionante!!! El tenis de mesa de los 80' y 90' definitivamente era más elegante que el actual, donde se privilegia la rapidez y la fuerza de los tiros.
The brain is there still, unfortunately not the speed anymore. But that's life, would he be as fast as a 20 yo that would not have been fun either. One have to except the unavoidable truth about age. Still one of the most beautiful playing players, that ever existed on the face of the earth.
such nice players, both of them, and great recognition in a warm hug after the match. thank you two great legends, love you both!
Look at those guys, almost 50 years old still look so fit and energetic. the answer-- playing table tennis!
Jan ove waldner
Energetic?
I think your in the wrong server mate
r/whoosh
waldner skipped leg day
Heartwarming ending. Great job Waldi. You still got it.
Man, Waldner's backhand punch is still the BEST!!!!!!!!!!
That final point
I like Waldner because he doesn't play with anger he usually smile and play with fun he doesn't make his opponent nervous in such way
Waldner is all about control. He is a King.
Wow still an excellent level of playing. Tons of finesse...showing that table tennis you can still play for a lifetime.
Though they may not match up to the current top players given their age, I found this match more entertaining than most matches today. More character and fun, less robotic like play.
That old style is so much fun to watch than this mechanic one of today's players.
Very entertaining... gives me hope (as I age) to see what these guys can still do :) Great table tennis!
I'm surprised Walder didn't appear in thug life memes compilations yet
That was fun to watch. I'm glad they played the match real and not exhibition. I'd like to see Waldner play Appelgren a real match also.
I also feared another pointless exhibition... it was fantastic to see some serious tt out of them :) Too bad Waldner missed at least 2 epic shots in this match ;)

You beat Waldner, right?
appelgren is way too old and has a leg injury now, poor apple :(

+Andreas Sundberg to Chuck Norris!
+Andreas Sundberg
LOL, but Waldner only lost that one set to Chuck Norris because he got roundhouse kicked during the time-out Chuck Norris took.
;-)
If Waldner and Chuck Norris would enter the same building at the same time. It would explode because of to much awesomness.
One of the most exciting games I've ever seen. Kept saying WOW outloud the whole time.
Waldner style of playing is an art in itself. The best
2:46 superb!!!! As well as the closing point of the match.
To be able to play at this level at such a high age is absolutely insane

That chop smash at in the second set was top quality.
When? Can't quite find in the video
First point of the second set.
They are "Legends" once you guys reach that level maybe then you can critize them but only maybe.

Omg, I love this Sport, because of legends like this 👍👍👍
Saive's returns from the deep and Waldner's at the table blocks , both wonderful. The last point was taken in royal style !

My respect given to these 2 gents...the make this sport excited and more entertaining
this is great tt. great defense and away from the table vollies. saive makes you earn your points. waldner is relentless attacker. beautiful.
Legends... great match... On another note Jim Butler is the shht.... Need more from you... I'm rooting... USA....proud you rep us...
I love the name of the tournament itself, worth calling the Real Legends Tour
4:45 - The Ma Long shot :DD
I love Waldner's block
Waldner's backhand block is the best i've seen in the game, he has so much control in it.
Jan Ove Walner , he like Roger Federer in Tennis Court so Talented, Brilliance, and Legend

great match and a trademark block to win it....great stuff!
Cet homme est le martien du tennis de table je l'adore 🏓🏓👌👌😍
2:58 how the fuck did he catch that ball. fucking matrix move
To quote him, he knows where the ball is going to be, and will be in the right place to receive it.
Very nice 🙂
i have one question pls ask me if u know. Waldner use short pip in BH Right ?
Coz i think like short pip in BH of Waldner.
thk u
supachok ruangsri it's inverted rubber, just as usual.
Waldner never used pips rubber at all, only inverted.
one of very few sports that I watch at 0.5 speed to see more
Waldner is still incredible... his technique is just sublime!!
Waldner has such excellent touch!
Love this. Thank you.
waldner is always the best
This is so good to watch rather watching malong and fan or harimoto scream .
Saive Waldner and Boll They are my absolute favorites both in terms of playing style and personality.
Класс! Давно забытые ощущения…
Mozart :) He beat many chinese players ......The best player of all time.
and Victor Barna
Who won the point at 3:25?
+Rahil Arora Waldner I think. you can see the umpire moved up his score
+Rahil Arora Waldner.
It’s amazing how Saive looks like he hasn’t aged at all - doesn’t have the usual belly that men of his age have
Waldner on the other hand does have a little bit of that
1:46 Did he say "Sumimasen"? (It means "I'm sorry" in Japanese)
Great match.
anyone know what rubbers they were both using? Waldner using Bluefire on FH but which one, 2 or 3 hmm. and for BH? Orange sponge....Baracuda?
Waldner impresionante!!!

A ya se por que el Edu lo vio!!
Amazing!!!
jan play so close to the table, and the ball always return
superb !
great match
Waldner is Pelé on table tennis
When was this footage recorded? (how long ago)

Belle prestation
Indeed Legends.Bravo
Two legendary players
Waldner still amazing and sometimes incredible. Both almost very high level

Stiga VS Donic
Feels nostalgic to see waldner do the same serve but the hand not covering the spin..
It was so amazing.. Waldner, bravo
WALDNER IS PLAYING ONLY BRUTALLY,LIKE SAVAGE & ON FORCE !!!! BIG BULLY ;) THATS WHAT I SEE.
Amazing
Six Years ago, and better quality than now
O importante é a amizade
Wow. I guess he really IS the ever green tree...
Super
素晴らしい
I love jan ove waldner
Waldner es una leyenda!
Deux joueurs légendaires!
Bello abrazo de amistad.
Champion will always be champion!!
How come Waldner doesn't play pro tour like Saive or Persson?
I think he just got retire and don't want to play in the pro tour more. But I supposed that he still playing in the low leagues in Germany.
+Lucas Nomura no he plays in sweden, his home country.
Respect
Best example of offense and defense play.
J. O. Waldner The best TT- Player ever.
haha just remember Jean Michel Saive from the "funnies match ever" video xD
why waldner don't use his magic serve
They really know how to play table tennis!
Still great Players !
Ребята!!! Вы супер !!!!
When i was a teen saive was my hero
Please slow motion videos
What a legend
waldner won so why is jean in the final and not waldner?
wow still the legend he is the one
Isn't this the guy who played the most outrageous tt with that young player ? 🏓🏓
Waldner can not hit topspin backhand properly due to tennis elbow .It is clearly visible here
