I’m 24 and I have just bought my first (relatively) fast car - polo gti. I work from home every friday and listen to the podcast week in week out. Thankyou all for being a part, of what i believe, will be a part of my life i will hold strong nostalgic value…

My Matchbox collection would suggest that peak wedge was the Alfa Romeo Carabo. I know it never made production but it should have and if coachbuilding on a skateboard chassis gets going I'm having one! Another point for Gandini and Bertone.
Having been on track with Max once (on a test day) and watched him race since he was about 11 in detail it astonishes me how he gets so little recognition. He was doing things in a kart I could hardly fathom. We are witnessing a genius at work right now, even if he's out front alone as drivers you can surely appreciate how rare it is to see someone drive at the level he is right now.
Shocking that the Murcielago wasn't mentioned as a great Wedge! The epitome of Wedge and toughness! 💯🔥 And for godsakes how has all these guys missed "Cosmic Girl" by Jamiroquai! An absolute classic with a banger of a video featuring some awesome cars! 😍

Neil, we must meet one day. Your views are so similar to mine! I too love the Gordon Keeble. I nearly bought ch 25 about 18 years ago, but at the time I wasn't really ready for a saloon car (having an AC at the time). About £23-25 bought a really good one at the time now more than four times that needed! But you are right, it should be much more given that it will outrun a DB5. I used to do business with Jim Keeble in his 'post' GK days. They need the widened steel wheels to 'sit right' I feel.
American Chapter contributing here. A friend just picked up a Bricklin. Nothing too interesting there, but it was a barnfind of such quality I think Johnny Smith might have had an orgasm. VIN showed it was one of the first dozen to be built. It had NEVER been driven and had yet to be registered. It's 'logbook' had yet to be transferred to a customer. It might not be a barnfind 250GTO (or the better looking 275 😉) but what a cool thing. Time capsule doesn't even begin to describe it - incredible.
I remember my old Observer's Book of Cars by Stuart Blaydon - several editions had the Bitter (founder by Erich Bitter). Many happy memories devouring those books.
I loved the 2 car garage. Although it was way out of my price range, Ed and chris are 100% correct. This is a game most car guys play at all different price ranges, trying to trade our way to the best possable dream car. When buying cars I always thing of Soap in "Lock Stock & two smoking barrels" when they ask him if he can afford the money for the poker buy in and he says "that depends on how you look at it. I can afford it if i see it again".
I binge watched recently the entire series of the original Miami Vice, fantastic cars and music and the plots aren’t even too bad considering it was the 80’s 😂
Having owned a 996.2 GT3 an S1 Elise and a Caterham 7 I'd be inclined to agree that at speed the 996 is absolutely phenomenal - even better with the thinner cup wheel on. The caterham I agree heavy but makes it easy at speed. My father owns a 997.2 GT3 and he also agrees the steering is somewhat hampered by the route master wheel. In my current S1 I agree there's a few geometry changes and brackets to steal from the S2 to make it that little better. I'd also throw in 986 Boxster S... Amazing car!
Another Brilliant 1hr plus of car related chat. Loved Neil recounting his 1st road trip in the Cortina to Lloret Del Mar. We did a similar trip to L’Estartit i(near to Lloret) n a Diahatsu F20 in 1998. It was a very slow journey there and back.
Two comments on the topic of Lancia: 1. Re: pronunciation, the Italian chap at the FCA museum pronounces it “Lanchia” 2. They still exist! The Lancia Ypsilon sells very well in Italy (2nd best selling car a couple of years ago?) and is quite a charming thing to drive in the context of its home market.
I stopped for coffee in Winchester on a Sunday morning in June 2014 and the Gordon Keeble Owners Club had a meet there. I was told that they were expecting about 80 of the cars to turn up. There were several dozen lined up when I left, all drop-dead gorgeous.

Steering Feel. 1. Lotus Elise S1 - by a long, long way, so far ahead of anything else. 2. Mazda NA MX5 (unassisted) 3. 675LT 4. 964 C2 5. Superformance GT40.
The steering feel thing is an easy one for me, Integra Type-R DC5. A proper hydraulic steering system that's quite heavily weighted and sends beautiful, delicate sensations through your hands and up your arms.. If you get the chance, try one...
@@jep1912 Whick model, EK or EP?? Now i know the EP had electric power steering and it was not in the same league as the DC5, not even close.. The EK i am unsure on, i believe it had the same system as the DC2 Integra in which case it would've been good.
I doubt the hosts read these but Oliver Winterbottom (Jag, TVR, Lotus) is my wedge guy. If you are going to wedge, it had better be all out geometric. Arrow-Johnston Scottish car maker! Grampian car museum in Alford is always worth a visit…not least the drive from Blairgowrie over the hill A93…my favourite U.K. road

Harris nails it as ever - early S2 Elise (not the fat federalised Toyota version). so you keep the unassisted brakes, the flyweight K series engine etc... but get all the developments Lotus made to the chassis. My S2 Elise was steering perfection. Shoutout to a well setup 986 Boxster too - not much else for £5k will be that good.
Wedge car Stratos Group4 without a doubt, Countach close behind. Wedge car that no one knows (covering two bases), Argyll Turbo GT - a Scottish car for christs sake! Another unknown brand Monica 560.....very pretty 'French' car sitting on Wolfrace wheels. Look it up 😉
I used to walk to school every day past dozens of dreary Allegro's, Marina's, the odd Cortina if I was lucky. One day a bright yellow Lotus Eclat S1 appeared in a neighbour's driveway, they'd won a department store perfume competition. Stopped me in my tracks, looked like a space ship and still does. I'll have that for my wedge please (but parked between a Countach and Stratos...).
The one car I remember for its steering feel was a Peugeot MI16. It just danced gently in your hands and communicated everything. For me better than any of my Porsche’s, Exige, Caterham etc. The Caterham steering could be improved by checking and adjusting tightness of the grub screws on the ‘ telescopic’ steering shaft a hilariously basic safety feature.

Just rented one from Porsche Stuttgart and drove through the alps. I actually like my new 2023 Corvette, too. YES, attend Pebble Beach. I go most years.
I’ve never been into moto gp, and the video pass is expensive (compared to f1). But I’m on the edge of my seat nearly every race, theres multi lap battles for position etc. I’ve fallen asleep during 2 of the f1 races this year, anyone looking for a bit of action should check it out!

At what point in the discussion will people perhaps consider that the rules in F1 have worked perfectly, and the reason we aren’t seeing even 2 drivers at the same team able compete at the top is the cars are incredibly close in pace and it really is the driver solely shining now. As a Ferrari fan I was far more turned off in the Mercedes era because that car was so clearly dominant no one else was close. I found the previous RB “dominance” far closer as of course 2 of the 4 years went right down to the wire. My point I guess is previously I thought any of those 20 drivers had a chance at both wins and the whole championship if they simply were given a drive in the Mercedes. I really don’t think that currently putting one of “my” drivers in the red bull would guarantee anything! None of the drivers are bad and the closeness and tiny spread of the field in quali almost every race this season has been a really refreshing change of pace.

Gents, when discussing wedge-shaped car favorites, I was surprised by the non-mention the the famous Triumph TR7, especially by a panel of Britts! Of course not in the same performance club as the Lambo and others but nevertheless a true classic in the sense Triumph was definitely thinking outside the box. Even the campaign slogan “the shape of things to come” was all about the wedge shape and how it was supposed to improve downforce and handling.
