      I wish there was a smaller lighter freezer dryer. As an older single woman there is no way I could pick the small one up to set it on the counter or table. 61 pounds for the freeze dryer and 32 pounds for the pump. If I ever find my last and finally living space I will get one and have someone help me, but I am afraid to do that now as I know I'll be moving most likely in the next year and I am afraid something might happen to it in the move. I lost my TV in this most recent move.

    Not long term by any means, but this is what I do in my fridge and they last 6+ weeks easily! Wash and dry them well. Put in airtight mason jar in fridge. @@CityPrepping Yes, the flavor is intense, but not bitter. I use them in salads in small pieces, and sauces, and baking. Lemon cheesecake, for instance. They are nice on fish and chicken. I find the lemons fermented in just salt too salty, even after I wash them off. I probably would not use any with pesticides, though people do do the baking soda wash. I use mainly the rind, so I want it very clean.

    Ok Kris, you just spit out the information on using a calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D3 tablet in a tomato planting hole like it was common knowledge. Maybe you should do some gardening videos as well lol yes, let’s add more to your plate!😂
    We have made lemon pepper but our favorite thing to do with lemons and oranges are to slice them thin and run them through a cycle on the Harvest Right and then put them in the bottom of a glass before adding ice and water. It is so refreshing. I have the medium machine and we are freeze drying 80 eggs per week (20 eggs or 4 cups per tray) from the chickens. If we didn’t share eggs with our friends and neighbors, I could triple that amount. We love them and I’ve used them in baking as well as making omelets and scrambled eggs. The Harvest Right was the single best appliance we’ve ever purchased!

    • @CityPrepping
      @CityPrepping  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found the eggshell route takes a long time for the calcium to breakdown. This tablet method worked great for me almost immediately. Still, eggshells are the sustainable and reliable way.

    • @glendasalser6217
      @glendasalser6217 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you bake them (the shells) in the oven first to dry them, then crush & powder them? I'd think the calcium would be more available more quickly that way.

    • @deborah820
      @deborah820 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@glendasalser6217 yes. I wash them and get the shell membrane out or at least punctured, then I lay them out on baking stones and cook in the oven on 225° for about six hours. After they’re completely dried, I put them in the Magic Bullet or Blender and pulverize them to a fine powder. We mix the powder back in to the feed we give our chickens, mix it with bird feed for the wild birds and on occasion, I’ll throw a few cups of the powder in the compost bin. It’s a simple process, just time consuming since the shells need to bake low and slow for so long. Hope this helps.

      I did it a few times, but didn't bake the eggs that long! I think I only baked them for about 30 minutes or an hour or two (it's been a long time ago) [ from something I'd read in a pet book written by a vet]. He said after crushing it, you can take it as a vitamin C supplement or give it to your pets. It would seem that heating it for 6 hours, even at a low temperature, would destroy the vitamins in it!!! Does it? Why do you bake it so long? Is it really necessary to do so? You said you sprinkled a few cups in your compost, so you also put it by the roots of ghe tomatoe plants??? Is that when you first plant the seeds, or later when the plant is grown, you dig down to the roots & apply the powder??? One more question: how do you keep ants out of your compost??? I haven't started composting yet, but wonder, with all the food scraps & rotting leaves & twigs, it seems like ants would build mounds there!!!

I will be doing all 3 and combining them together for a super food powder. the good parts of a lemon are the seeds, and the good parts of the orange are in the skin. Yes the upfront price is hefty, but so is wasted food or money on trivial things. When this machine allows you to make more things yourself and reduce having to rely on stores, it pays for itself.

    Freeze dryer is beyond most people budgets. You can dry food with a box fan, pack of house filters and food grade sheets. It's not freeze dry but it will make food last.

    I just wish I could afford a freeze dryer…I think many of us can’t…but I’d do have a dehydrator…do you think I could make a decent tasting citrus peel powder and have good nutrient levels in it?

    • @CityPrepping
      @CityPrepping  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am dehydrating some lemons now. You lose a little of the nutrition and maybe some of the flavor, but you can totally do it that way too.

    I dehydrate but unfortunately have no freeze dryer...Generally, the lower the temperature for dehydration the better preserved the vitamins. I’ve been squeezing lemon juice and refrigerating and freezing it in cubes. It’s better than the store bought that’s been pasteurized, because the heat kills the vitamins and enzymes. But not suggested for water bath canning as the acidity level not verified.

    • @CityPrepping
      @CityPrepping  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, heat degrades the nutrition. On the upside, though, there's tons of nutrition in a lemon, so what is retained is still pretty potent.

    • @CityPrepping
      @CityPrepping  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can create a vacuum and a freezing temperature in your oven, yes. Otherwise, I think you'll just get mush that is dehydrated. :)

      I used the zest for some for Limocello. The recipe for that is on the website. There is no need to do that. You can puree the whole lemon with no problem and no off flavors or bitterness.

    I did this with limes and it (sugar) wrecked my trays. Use parchment paper if you do this.

      @CityPrepping  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sugar content must have been higher. With lemons this worked fine on my trays, but I'll use parchment paper next time as a precaution. Thanks for the tip. :)

    I believe you live at sea level? That will require a lower temp than someone at a higher altitude in order to reach the needed consistency. Also, it has been my experience for the crack stage that you are trying to reach, as soon as you hit the needed temp, you pull it from the heat and move it quickly to where it will be stored. Or that's how my grandma always did it!
