Saw him once 50 years ago at Hampshire College when he brought a baseball bat and leaned it against the piano bench he sat on. He never referred to it in any way for the entire performance but we knew why.
I'm so grateful I got to see him perform twice in the 1980s at the most perfect small venue. Once with just a tuba player, once with a piano player. I was so sad when he passed, for his family and for all of us devoted fans. This is one of my favorite songs of his.
I love Da Redbone.... but I can only hope that as PS said every generation sends a hero up the pop charts. Just don't forget about the greats of the past. There are so many great songwriters, musicians, singers artists of the past. If we are equally blessed, we have a lot to look forward to!
I miss this man's wonderful music so much. I had the distinct pleasure of hearing him on several occasions live. He was always so entertaining and relaxed to say the least. Just about the mellowest fellow I have ever met. Songs like The One Rose That's left in my heart or Moonlight Bay or Prairie Lullaby speak to that mellowness, but than he has a whole bunch of very uplifting songs as well. We love you Leon. Until we meet again.
I don't think Leon Redbone is a performer. I think that's why he's so great. He doesn't put on a performance for YOU. He plays, 'plays' for himself, and listens and enjoys as he does it. He lets you see/hear that. There's no way he's 'in your face'. Just think about it. 99% of performers everywhere are putting something on show for us. Doing a 'sell'. Leon ain't.
This gives such a warm, pleasantly melancholic feel. It doesn't hurt that the interpretation is nonchalantly virtuoso. Such impossible apparent relaxation, thinly disguising elegant yet cutting heartache.
Warm memories of my Grandfather and his music come back listening to Leon. My Grandfather played guitar for a dance band. He would play guitar and sing these type of songs.
thank you for your wonderful music had the pleasure of seeing you perform live several times will always keep your music and the live performances close to my heart many thanks agqin
saw him on SNL Probably the first season singing Daisy and shine on harvest moon Went and got the album next day? from the Anoka County Library. Turned me on to all kinds of music he did

I'm late to the comment, but why? Rough crowd? Hampshire lost a baseball game?

Leon is a soothing balm in the current mental world.

Mr Redbone had a style all of his own.. It will never get old.
If I live to be a thousand year old, I doubt that I'll hear a smoother voice.
We will miss you, and we celebrate your art there will never be another...maybe that's the way it should be. Rest In Peace
Found Leon the day he passed. Love the melted butter sound. And "Why" is my most oft repeated question in this life.
Listening to Leon I feel myself in a warm friendly circle, his melodies are so close to me. Long years to you , Leon.
Never thought I would outlive Leon Redbone. See you soon.
I am 69 going 70ish.
Just love his voice. He is my new addiction 😁
It is a good day after listening to this.
loved you since I was a kid.... feel so old and now a little lonely too... miss you Leon.
Leon is an absolute legend
Patron saint of troubadours.
A man born in Cyprus, emigrated to Canada and sang as if he were born and raised in New Orleans in the 19th and early 20th century.
My dad loved Leon redbone and I love him too He's such a great soul to listen to.
That HAS to be Bob Gordon on the clarinet! This is heaven. K
Elegant, simple and so TRUE! C'est magnifique,
bon Soir Karl

Completely captivating.

Written by Jelly Roll Morton.
I always picture Jenna Coleman as my “Why” girl.
Viens Léon à Alfortville, c'est très Arménien !
Isn't Teddy Roosevelt still President?
Just read the "this sucks" comment. The boy is too young or just doesn't understand the genre'.
It's gone.
They don't understand life these 'kids' nowadays. Bloody idiots.
Can you remove “this sucks?” Of course we are all such fans that it hurts to see that ignorance.
Done....I guess that one slipped by my radar. Looks like it was a comment left a long time ago.
