Love the “only one me” comment. Yep, I came to that realization too. Switching from Windows MS Outlook tag system to the separate calendar system on Mac gave me fits for a while for that reason, but I eventually found a system that works. I have a Personal calendar, a non-shared Family & Friends calendar (I’m single & my kids are grown) to keep track of their travels & such (why isn’t my kid picking up? Oh yeah, she’s in Germany…), a Public Events calendar for interesting events I haven’t committed to attend, or that might just mess up traffic in my neighbourhood while they’re on, and a Financial Calendar. I log subscription payments and cancellation dates, and record auto-debits with frequency, payee and amount. If I didn’t have to budget so carefully I probably wouldn’t bother with that last one, but it helps me pace my spending & has worked really well.
I never knew about the Custom alert option (doesn’t appear on iPad or iPhone Calendar app). One trick that I use that comes in handy is to have a calendar for completed events. After an appointment or meeting is over, I edit the event and change the calendar that it’s assigned to to this “completed” calendar. I only have it displayed when I need to look back in time for something (when was my last dental check up?). It keeps my calendar clear, but allows me to look up past events.
What a great tip! I have been struggling to find a way of retaining cancelled events on the calendar. It can be most useful to see this record. It would be marvellous if Apple would let me cancel an event and a 'strike through' be added to the event AND for the screen to retain and display this action. Your Tip is a creative 'work around' for the absence of this functionality.
My life runs base on the info I put in the calendar, it is so handy to move, drag and drop events to a another day if I couldn't accomplish it ( sample, get iPhone cable ), my college "Canvas Schedule" syncs all assignments ETC to my calendar too.
I have a calendar called 'history' where I put in the dates of notable events, anniversaries, passings, sizable purchases etc etc. Many are set as annual repeats with advance notifications. The notes section contains pertinent info when appropriate. One example is with new computers I go into the 'about this Mac' in the Apple menu, copy the 'Overview' info and paste it in the notes. For cars the VIN & other info go in etc. Don't forget to determine warranty expiration dates & put them on your calendar with a couple of weeks advance notification. I have my vaccination dates listed, with a pdf of my card saved in the attachments. Don't forget about the Calendar app search function! Very useful! (I thought I'd posted this earlier, but it seems to have disappeared...)
Since my calendar is shared between my Mac and my iPhone, I often use the "location" field in a calendar event to note the address for that event, eg, for a weekend trip, or a meeting taking place in a location I don't usually go to. That way I can open Calendar on my iPhone in the car and just tap the location field in the event to automatically open up the Maps location for directions. No need for searching around for the address in my address book or in Google.
