@TINMAN GOODTIMES buddy,,,many more to come can just imagine you,IRONHORSE,BELLHOPPER, and DONNY WALKER AT BUCKINSTOCK 3 PUTTING YOUR THOUGHTS TOGETHER OH WHAT A SAW YOU GUYS COULD BUILD ,,THE MAD SCIENTISTS OF SAWS😎😎😎😎✊✊✊✊
Watched a ton of porting vids... this was the first time I was ahead on the math😃something clicked!!! Thanks for putting yourself out there👍 Tinman, you walking Buckin through helped me too😎🙏
I love it Buckin. This is so cool I love the First of parts of the Buckin Experience. Thank you Tinman for sharing with all of us your knowledge. Love ya Buckin. Thank you. 🌲❤🌲✊🪓
Crazy cool how he took the 10 inch splash cymbal from his drum set, flattened it out and called it a timing wheel. Had me fooled, of course I'm easily fooled. Some younger kids call me an old fool under their breath. That's why I'll never be more than a Buck private in the Buckin Army. But that's fine with me... As long as i have my brand new (to me) turn of the century double bit axe to haft. jirus... the old school fool. 😊 ☕ 🐀 🔧 🍁
My old man and I stripped the engine and gearbox out my first car to do a repair, neither of us knew anything about mechanics, it was so much fun and brought us together after years apart. I now do it with my own son and his car. Great vid as usual. Never stop learning.
Intake timing can be controlled by the bottom of the piston skirt / bottom of intake port. Exhaust timing is controlled by the distance from the top of the exhaust port to the top of the cylinder, less distance , more rpm , so if you were to just raise the exhaust port 1mm (.039) (and not alter the base gasket/piston / intake at all theoretically you would raise the rpm at the expense of the bottom end power ... more distance (thinner base gasket (say .5 mm or .019) or none at all so entire cylinder sits lower, will lower exhaust port and intake port) , will increase intake timing but decrease exhaust and give more torque/compression at the expense of top-end power , you will be increasing the compression / lessening the squish obviously by using a thinner gasket ... on power stroke right after plug fires the action begins as soon as the topmost ring (not top of piston) exposes the exhaust port and the flow begins. Also remember you have degrees of “dwell” on both TDC and BDC where the piston actually comes to a complete stop before reversing direction. It’s mind boggling at first (consider at 10000rpm the piston is cycling 166.6 times per/second !!! - that’s not a lot of time to move the air fuel mix). It’s all about air flow Buckins, more AIR = more Torque fir the most usable gains. I’ve built saws with machining work (squish band, base cut) that have grunt but won’t wind out (higher-compression) and it’s my belief that the bottom end (bearings ,rod etc) takes more of a beating) but nowadays just make them flow and make sure to get the exhaust system right, tube exhaust is the key . You’ve said a “pulling exhaust” or creates pull and you’re right on the money there bro. It’s called resonance and when everything is working together ( intake , porting and exhaust ) the saw will pull like the 7 horses of hell in the timber. That 288 that was supposed to eat the 394s lunch is an example of a “forum boyZ saw” (machined squish , decked cylinder, advanced timing etc ) and while the guy did a fantastic job with it she just didn’t cut the mustard against the “free-flowing 394 (with a gazillion miles on it ) , bout a tie thru the timber but the 394 ate its lunch in the torque-test with 7cc (87cc to 94cc) . I’ve got a 59cc 362c that’ll run right with a 72.2 cc 462c (13.2cc advantage) with 18” bars on em but the 462c will walk away a bit with 25” bar so it can be done if the orchestra is all playin the same tune ! Have fun and remember less is more
Once you start porting you will never want to stop. You will dream about it. You will start to visualize flow when ever you see any cylinder! So excited for you! You are the perfect person to port saws because of your vast experience running them every day. You already know how it feels when it's right 😎
You are off to a good start, Buckin. I've never done saw mods either, although I do some auto maintenance. My dad wasn't the handy type so I had to figure stuff out on my own, too.
The first time I put a timing wheel on a 2 stroke it was mind-boggling it gets easier as you do it like everything else in life. And TinMan is right once you learn this it is a game changer you actually understand the aspects of a two stroke and what makes it tick. As you use a timing degree wheel on two strokes looking at how the ports open there are lots of aha moments. I started out with curbside disposed throwaway weed eaters or string trimmers whatever you wish to call them. I figured if I ported them and messed them up so what they were basically junk when I got them for free alongside the road. First I got them running most of the time it's just a broken request ring or rotted out fuel lines maybe a carburetor diaphragm kit. Then I put a timing wheel on and wrote down my numbers. Next I did port work that I thought would improve there performance and of course did muffler mods or made pipes then put them back together recorded my degree wheel numbers and ran them to see how they ran learning each time. And all of this was made possible by watching buckin Billy Ray and learning about tin Man and iron horse. Watching both iron horse and tin Man videos inspired me to give it a shot. I have previously ported for strokes and I also worked as a CNC machinist machining airflow fixtures so I have a bit of understanding of what makes air flow. But to be honest I never really understood two strokes I knew that if you changed porting it would change the timing so I never dared mess with them much other than smooth out or blend in a port here and there. Thanks to the three of you guys I am now ready to start a little more advanced porting on some of my power saws. All three of you have great videos I simply love watching all of them.
Looking forward to more videos like this. I'm setting up a spot in my garage to work on power saws. Been watching Tinman's videos. I enjoyed this video. You're going through the same learning process as I am. It's helpful to me when you run into an issue and have to figure it out...out loud. I listen to the thought process as you are learning. That's easy for me to relate to. And, your excitement is contagious! Oh, boy! This is a whole new can of worms! I gotta get me a few old power saws to learn on. That in itself will be fun! I love all of your videos. You've got a great attitude! Keep up the good work!
What I love about this video for me is bringing FUN into the game vs. always having that competitive mine is bigger better than yours mentality or doing it as a paid task. Making old iron run like new iron...MY kind of fun! Thank you for taking this angle....Tin man really was the genesis for you right ? I put my timing wheel into hiding back in 2016 I guess....do only newer saws. Never the old Homies. Maybe this is the kick in the tail needed to bring the fun back into that game. ( I've done it for money...specific customer saws...as work for years, but that isn't FUN ) Maybe its time a ported 925 on the happens for kicks..or better yet a L77. :)
Hey Buckin, love watching your channel, it's nice to learn new things from you. I also took a page out of your book of kindness and started helping out the car behind me at the drive thru, such a nice feeling ☺👍, can't wait to see you and your son back in the trees, be safe❤
Port from what you said is common for porting get the squish pull plug and use silver solder roll over engine by hand and measure how much the solder is swished .
I love the Kindness at Buckin's Bunker. Also, I like his online store. I've got Tee shirts Hats patches stickers and Hoodies and my morning coffee I drink out of Buckin's coffee mugs. Great quality awesome merchandise reasonable priced and it helps the cause. Cold weather coming up and I'm going to be heading back to Buckins store for some more awesome Tees and Hoodies. Check out those hats they are great. I have on a Woodman tee in my profile photo. Peace and many blessings to everyone.
Good for you Billy, I'm glad to see you doing what you want. I haven't gotten much into building saws, but I've put together multiple vehicle engines. It's quite rewarding to put something together, and know exactly what's happening inside, what makes it "tick" I'm looking forward to learning about these smaller two strokes with ya! I can get excited about this stuff!
I can relate to what you're saying about pretending that ys know about stuff when ya don't. That was me years ago as well. I had my dad but he didn't want to work with us growing up. So I know exactly what you're saying
Hey Will Hughes here from the UK, I believe that could be the timing wheel I sent you some time ago. Since sending you that wheel I’ve been hooked on the Timmans channel. He’s absolutely amazing!
What a powerful message! Knowing is power, get your hands dirty. Thanks for sharing this. I learn something new from everyone of your videos. Stay safe, be kind and love always wins.❤️🪓🪵✊🏻
Hey Buckin, our upbringings are very similar, it's crazy. Mom basically raised me, step Dad wasn't there for me until later in adult life. I also was a phoney with other guys growing up, just to fit in. It hit me in my 20's to be as real as possible and admit when I don't know something. Awesome video again!
I can hear it now...Hey Buckin', can ya port my chainsaw? Buckin' you are already got a lot of of things going on, but to see you learning to port, that's deadly. Who's going to get a chainsaw ported by Buckin'? MEEEEEE! I'm first!!! Start a list!! Will there be a list for a Wood Bullet? Put me on that list, for 2 (don't tell my son). This too shall pass, one day at a time...
Amazing video as always buckin, life is good now! Couldn’t be better, topped off with another amazing video, me and my stepdad are in the woods felling Ash and selling firewood in the UK so always love a saw video, best of luck Buckin, that mac is going to be a ripper! 🌲🪓
Isn't that interesting.... Love that saying . Especially when the teacher says it. It gives the project an elevated excitement of mystery and intrigue. A positive dynamic of learning something on the fly. By actually touching with one's hands is actually the best way for most people to learn. Not just a finger on a screen. That sound disappears when he took the carburetor off because that's the Reed valve opening and closing in the carburetor to get your compression in the crankcase to push the fuel , air , oil mixture into the cylinder on the downstroke. This is the reason they're called a 2-stroke engine not a 4-stroke. On the upstroke when the Piston has closed the intake ports and exhaust port compressing the mixture in the cylinder the Reed valve is opening in the carburetor and allowing air fuel mixture to enter the crankcase. On the downstroke the Reed valve on the carburetor closes, alowing the air-fuel mixture in the crankcase to be compressed. When the Piston goes past the intake ports the air-fuel mixture pushes into the cylinder forcing the exhaust gases out the exhaust port. Did I make that clear as mud for you? When timing the engine you're checking to make sure the ports are at the right degree in the rotation of the crank for all this to happen properly and to allow you to move the coil to the right place over the magnets in the flywheel to get the spark at the most efficient degree of the cycle. Now, that should really have cleared that muddy water up?
I knew a guy like what you described in the Navy who was raised by his mom and boy, that feller would blow smoke when it was a blatant lie. It was getting bad as everyone would begin to laugh at him and talk about him after his, *"yeah, me too!"* He was bad about it, but a good guy... Finally, I told him to cut the 💩 out and be honest with people because he was about to lose any chance of redemption. He tried to say he owned everything back at home and that he did everything anyone would talk about. I called him out and said I cannot be around you if you're going to lie, you're going to ruin my name by being around you. The kid began to be honest and he soon had friends within my group. If people would only care enough to help them correct their course... You'd be surprised by what kind of person a tall tale , white lie, and smoke blowing goofball can actually turn out to be! A good friend to this day, 20 years later and I could count on him for anything, ANYTHING! God works through us

Use a drill 1/2" chuck to fit your degree wheel to crank. You need some lead solder and verneer calipers to measure squishbamd clearance.
knowing sets you free
The noise sounds like the flywheel rubbing the coil Billy. It may not be but when you had the camera up close it looked like it. PEACE
That sound disappears when he took the carburetor off because that's the Reed valve opening and closing in the carburetor to get your compression in the crankcase to push the fuel , air , oil mixture into the cylinder on the downstroke.
