I'm a Canva defender because it's gotten my mom (a KINDERGARTEN TEACHER) more into design and now we get to talk about something that we're both interested in lol, I've also been using it since middle school (before I had access to Adobe products) and I think the free version of Canva is such a great entry level tool
Every January, I look up these "design trends" and then intentionally spend the rest of the year forgetting about them and just doing my own thing. Quick tip fellow designers; your creative eyesight can improve simply from just nerding out with creative colleagues and following the right artists on social media.
I love the part: There is so much beauty in this half finished work. As a designer that always had to work in refined designs and projects I felt the need to be messy when it came to my own personal projects and found more excitement when I could just doodle or use out of ordinary concepts for my designs. I agree with Kel's trends.
I'm watching and commenting. The Cyanotype trend is going to take off this year. You have seen it popular the past 5 years in the fine art circles and I can totally see that trickling down to graphic design. The deep blues and whites give a witchy vibe that I can see adding to the witchy trends we have seen in the past years.
*A NOTE ABOUT THE CANVA TRENDS:* With the acquisition of _Affinity_ they are taking themselves a bit more seriously in the realm of design. I am sure they are a bit more 'on trend' and designer friendly in their explanations because they have a Design Advisory Board - which includes big hitters like Debbie Millman, Jessica Hische, Eddie Opara, James Martin and more ... Their examples also show some good copywriting, its beyond the image, they look like actually insitu examples of the trends. I have just discovered your channel... MAN SO REFRESHING!!! subscribed straight away ... glad i am here for your 'visual' age :D
since u guys said yall read comments (side note, i wonder which one of might be reading this one rn) I J WANA SAY. thank u ur mere existence makes me happy i listen to ur podcast episodes ON REPEAT. u hear that. ON REPEAT
"In rebellion of AI-generated imagery"😳 Edit: in hindsight, broad "design trends" are kinda meaningless to me now. There are so many artists and designers out there working across all of these styles, there really isn't much "unexplored" design space left, if you are looking at the entirety of the media landscape. Metallic colors aren't as common anymore, but if you're in tech or fintech, it's still popping up all the time, for example. What I do find more interesting and meaningful is design trends within a certain category or niche. If 70% of wine bottle labels all started using pixel fonts in 2024, that would be worth talking about. If major grocery chains all of a sudden started pivoting into metallic, holographic, psychedelic textures, that would be a trend worth dissecting. But some of these "trends" are too broad to be considered as such ("shapes"?) or they're trendy within a certain context, which makes some groups of people (like those at Adobe) believe they are more or less common than they are on the whole, purely because of what design niches we happen to be exposed to individually. If you're in tech, you're gonna keep seeing lots of pixel art/fonts, and lots of metallic sheens. If you're in explainer videos, you're gonna keep seeing more collage-style stop-motion motion graphics, just like we've seen for easily the last 10 years.
Love the production value of this episode. I never would've thought of using Figma for a podcast, you guys are truly innovating Edit: as a motion designer I disagree, EVERYTHING needs motion 😂😂😂 lol jk but I do like to make things move, even if slowly not to jar people too much
1:05:33 I just spent all last weekend organizing all the paper-like products in my craft closet by color & type with specific intention to see what I can do in this style. Thank goodness it’s a Kelliot-approved up-and-comer!
Kel's first trend is giving "Grandma Post Modern" Like a Midwestern horse girl. Napolean Dynamite Core. I agree that we are seeing a lot more whimsy western in design and I think we are going to see the height of it this year and then it will get old quick.
As a Motion Designer listening to learn more about Graphic Design it's funny to hear you guys talk about Motion Design 😂😂 I mean it definitely overlaps with Graphic Design but it's not the same thing, you are right about that haha
I have been screen printing a ton lately as a revolt against AI. Mixing the idea of seeing all these streetwear/brutalism designs online and printing them on stock instead of on garments.
When you talk about influencers (41:53) who keep giving advice even though they’re no longer or have never been full-time graphic designers, it just reminds me of my design teachersThe issue is the same.
Love how they reached out to no designers, gave no opportunities to show real creatives although they made so many comment on how they want don’t want Ai to take over 😂
I'm curious about your thoughts on Adobe trends. It seems like the company might be aware that many designers might face layoffs, and they're transforming their software tools into "toys" for everyday people, not designers who might be looking to explore their creative side. I'm just wondering, if designers are losing their jobs, who's going to keep buying their subscriptions? I'm curious if Adobe thinks that, with the rise of AI, designers might become less specialized and more focused on trends, which might make them more dependent on the brand.
Sorry for commenting so much, I’ve been commenting as I’ve been watching!! But I’d love to see a video of your takes on what you think is or will be trending. So creating a collection of designs using your favourite trends for this year
Did an AI also set Adobe's trends lol minus the first one, they sound like Generally Okay Graphic Design practices, which, if they're targeting non-designers to get on the design boat, wooould make sense for them if they're introducing these as the baseline things you can try out yourself
It’s interesting that templates don’t get the same pushback as Ai. The “Canva bad” meme exists of course, and Kelliot are quick to the defence. Surely both are lazy and inauthentic, using someone else’s designs for your own benefit. That’s not to say you can’t build from either method, make it your own and elevate it. As long as the client is happy with it and you charge a fair price that reflects the work you put in what’s the difference?
AI is actively harming the planet and steals from artists and designers, is the difference. People who create templates are likely compensated for their work while folks who get their stuff sampled for AI will probably never see a payment for their work being scraped and the soul being ripped out of it.

real designers appreciate canva!
Nah that adobe article was definitely chatgpt'd 😭

Any people you like to recommend following?
@@ActualArsalan for me it all starts with looking at who your favorite artist is following and going down that rabbithole
It's so nice to actually see the fonts of the week, FigJam was a great idea. And Kel's trends are too good🔥
it just makes SENSE!!!!
13:35 AI being number one while Adobe talks about why AI is bad but also good but also bad and just tiptoeing around it is so CRAZY! It’s wild
I love the part: There is so much beauty in this half finished work.

Keep doing what you're doing! It'll be really obvious this year who's using what tool. Everyone is a designer now ☠
When you talk about influencers (41:53) who keep giving advice even though they’re no longer or have never been full-time graphic designers, it just reminds me of my design teachersThe issue is the same.

kelliot is to me what joe rogan and andrew tate is to annoying men
Adobe had to have used AI for the trend forecasting. That is disappointment only AI can conjure.
i love to be tangible, raw, and edgy
Sorry for commenting so much, I’ve been commenting as I’ve been watching!! But I’d love to see a video of your takes on what you think is or will be trending. So creating a collection of designs using your favourite trends for this year

“Maximalist Illustration” but they show the most bog-standard corporate illustrations possible.
