Very well done. I’ve been looking for a tutorial that I can actually understand and I finally found one…this one. Thank you for making this and again very well done.👍🏻
My gawd only 57 seconds in and I learn about the Car Model preview...wow much larger than the paint booth preview... Now I have to collect my thumbs all over! ;) PS: Zip Line Camera video is up.
How can i send you pics? The mergeing if spec map folders makes it so much more simple. That was a game changer for me. I was looking for that high metal but not super gloss paint. Im very happy with next seasons paint
Yeah i just had a brain wave one day about it, wasn't sure if it would work because i didn't know if iracing would be trying to read the individual colours channels but it did! :) I'm in a couple of discord groups, you could drop it in there, or throw a quick video up on your channel? 😊 discord.com/channels/763096386450227201/763096386962849794
Great video Dom! I’ve been confused for so long with these spec maps I gave up on them. I’m anxious to try them out again! I’ve been away for a few weeks and now it’s week 13 so I might tinker with some paints to roll out fresh for 2022 season 1!
Your absence has not gone unnoticed, sir. Hope work hasn't been too chaotic for you! Pleased the vid helped, i found spec maps a real head scratcher at times so wanted to put what i DID know, into video format 🤣 Can't wait to see what you come up with
I’ve tried to figure them out too and couldn’t so you have way more patience than I have. It’s been a little chaotic but just life. Work/family stuff mixed with the holiday season and also a vacation to Disney World thrown in. So there was a little down time in there!
@@DomParkerRacing Yeah Disney was a nice getaway! The mic was muted during that race, it always seems something is wrong when my PC or iRacing does an update. I did a race and watched/listened and everything went well recording wise but I got wrecked(Dega baby) so I did a second race and somehow I muted my voice. Oh well, it was a fun race.
EXCELLENT Toot! Haven't been through all completely but you've bird dogged out more than I have. On the Number Block on roof; that block can be shown. It is under "Turn Off Before Exporting". Now as you mentioned; that block will be a standard size for all given numbers be they 1 or 64. But if you want those numbers to be not matte or chrome - you can work with that block. I'll have to experiment with that Blue Channel on or off - I've always had it Off....
Thanks Dave, hopefully i rambled my way through it enough to make some sort of sense 🤣That's a good point about using the number block to separate it from the rest of the spec map... i should probably just look into the trading paints upgrade by now i guess haha I think the Blue channel would just work as default if you had it turned off, but a really interesting effect if you leave it turned on but manipulate it in some way 😊
Just some questions 👉🏻 do you have to name it "car_spec" for it to work? And do you then have 2 files of the same car in the iracing folder?(like car_ID + car_spec_id) I use Trading Paints, and I have made a mix of green/red parts in my paint, but it does not show as chrome or matte, why it that? (Its under the custom spec map)
@@ScandiFlickRacing you have to name them like that when you are using the preview in iracing's showroom or within the sim itself, but once you've uploaded it to Trading Paints, trading paints should be creating those files with the correct names for you, and everyone else to see in sim. So for example, if my iracing ID was 445566, my basic paint file would need exporting as car_445566.tga, then i would need to hide that paint to show only the spec map colours with the reds and greens (and now blues since this video was made) which would need exporting as car_spec_445566.tga (that file once read by the sim will duplicate itself into a .mip file so you end up with 3 files in your paints folder) Once you're exporting the files to upload to trading paints, you don't actually need to use the same naming format, so the paint could just be called paint.tga, but for the spec map, TP will want that .mip file rather than tga, so that could be called specmap.mip Hope that helps, shout up if you've got any more questions or need any more help
@@DomParkerRacing what if you want a mix then? Like if I want the mix between blue and red 👉🏻 magenta color, what layer do i put it in? Magenta color, or do like you did, and turn down opacity on the top layer and let the other one "shine through"? So the car_spec_IracingID in your video is the same as the one you would upload to trading paints, right? As long as you have your primary layer aswell ofc with your paint 😅 Thanks for a good answer!
@@ScandiFlickRacing In general nowadays, I always merge the spec map down to a single layer. It can be a bit problematic when there are already some things spec'd as default on the car like radiators and/or carbon, but a single layer spec is so much easier to work with IMO So yeah, for a mix of blue and red you'd end up with magenta The car_spec_iracingID is NOT what you would upload to TP, you would need to grab the MIP file that is created by iracing when you first upload the car_spec_iracingID So to upload a full paint with spec to TP you will upload 2 files in total, the paint scheme as a TGA, then the spec map as an MIP

no matter what I never seem to be able to do anything chrome. I've followed over 20 guides and none of them have worked. so either I'm either missing a step, which is odd because I follow the guides to the T or I'm just that fkn dumb which maybe the possibility
I’ve done some spec maps since watching your video and they have all turned out great but I have one issue with one of them, I have a spec map “shadow” on one of my cars. Even though I load a completely different paint that doesn’t have a spec map in it I still get the shadow of my paint with the spec map. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this? This has happened on only one specific car.
This sounds like the spec map file is still saved into your documents folder, and so iracing is reading that on your paint. I've noticed for some reason the spec files seem to be maintained when you leave and enter sessions, whereas the paint files themselves get removed. First port of call would be to check that car's paint file in documents and delete the Spec from there, if it is there If not let me know and i'll see what else i can come up with!
You need the camera editor (ctrl+F12) menu open (or collapsed) to be able to edit the camera. Then it is WASD, shift+WASD and ctrl+WASD to move it around
Honestly i think the paint shop in the UI is better for previewing the colours now, then only jump into a test drive once you think you've got it nailed

Why does the top of the car look darker than the sides? Are you not viewing at noon with sun directly above?
ask iRacing's graphics team 🤣
