I really love the combination of you three powerhouses! Each of you bring a unique perspective on dealing with our homes. Even though not everything is for everyone, there is value in learning about different ways of living our lives. I can almost always take away a new idea I can implement in my own home or life. ❤
Thank you Dana as always for all your help and support with my decluttering journey. Highly recommend the take your house back course. You, Dawn and Caz are absolute superstars 🌟🌟🌟 Xx
I love it when you come back from your summer breaks! I get so excited to see new videos because i missed you and cant believe here you are again! Thanks!
It seems like a lot of us were taught to worry more about other people’s feeling than our own. Some of it is not wanting someone to be angry with us, but a lot of the time we’re imagining an emotional reaction that will never happen, or that the other person is grown up enough to deal with privately. I’m not responsible for anyone else’s emotions. The old boss who wants to give away a table 20 years later might be offering a thoughtful gift, but equally likely they just want rid of it! If they’re offended that’s their issue, not ours.
I stopped thinking about recycling as what I SHOULD do, and started thinking about what I CAN do. I recycle tin/steel cans (among other things). If I can swish the cans (used for meal) in the used dish water at the end of doing dishes (no dishwasher) and be done, then they get recycled. If they need extra work, they go in the trash. It means more than 90% of cans get recycled and I can live with that. I have very small recycle containers in and just out side my kitchen, when they get filled, I go to the closest recycle center (2 miles away) with them, unless I am going to be near there and I drop stuff off early so I rarely have to make a special trip. I have slightly larger containers in the garage for items that the local center doesn’t take (shredded paper, glass) and that stuff goes when I am going to be near there (about 30 miles away). The container concept works for recycling also. I don’t let it build up and I had to stop trying to upcycle everything I came across that I could upcycle if I had infinite time.
Your description of EXACTLY HOW the process works, as you're going through it in real time, is EXCELLENT!! Helen's question about old toys. --As you walk through the whole thing with one toy, now you know WHERE you would look for old toys, WHAT the space looks like and have a better idea of what your PRIORITIES for your spaces are ❤🎉
Paperwork: I’ve decided with my divorce paperwork that I don’t pull it all out, that I’ll pick up one piece of paper, if it’s too emotionally charged to deal with, decide if I can deal with it now or put it back, no guilt attached. I’ll only go through the pile until my ears get pink and warm or just beforehand and that’s it for the session done. Yes that means it’ll take longer and will be more drawn out but I have to decide if I want to get it done in a hit or two and deal with the emotions of that for a period of time or is it better to deal with little by little and let the time and distance settle me down as my life gets more on track realising it was a horror I had to go through but life is better for it.
Thank you, Dana! 😊❤ I am currently decluttering three kitchen drawers...& throughout our home along with my husband, preparing for a cross-country move this year...eek! 😊❤
Doing my dishes and heard about the hand knit sweaters... call local convalescent homes... they are always looking for warm clothing for there clients... I spent several years working in convalescent homes and many years with seniors... also local food bank may take donations, the one that I volunteer at does...
I love the all-day declutter, but I'll be out of town again! Ugh. Those have been so helpful for me, but I missed the last one. Recorded still helps, but not quite the same
I joined TYHB last December as a Christmas gift to myself. The first all-day declutter in January I was super sick with covid! Broke my heart to miss it. I cleared my work schedule for this Saturday, even turned down pet sitting clients.
If you don’t want people to give you things for birthdays or major holidays when gift giving is traditional (situations where you don’t want to say “no thank you”), it’s a good idea to give people a heads up. On the invitation to a party, or significantly before the holiday, you can say “No gifts expected. If you really want to give me something, please give me an experience, your time, or a donation in my name to _______ charity.”
@@DanaKWhite can y'all please consider an SSDI discount for the chronic illness community 👀 I started one thing at a time but have MECFS so I can't work and you know about the crippling fatigue. I'm washing the dishes every day 🤓 so thanks for that 😘 you're the best 🧡
Yes, the hospital I used to work in had an attached nursing home. The residents always seemed to be cold. Hand knit sweaters would be a blessing to them.
For me they were the boxes that had been used to quickly clear surfaces to make the house look picked up that got stashed in a room guests don't see and then gets forgotten about.
DOOM stands for don't organized only move. Basically a box full of random items, maybe you threw stuff in there at one point in time when you were trying to clean up a room but it needs sorted through and put away properly. Or discarded or donated if it's items you no longer need or have space in your life.
What happens when a person is the only one left in the family who is sentimental? Like beautiful dishes, cups and saucers from the 1940’s…..even antique furniture. I love these things. Unfortunately we now have a tiny house so a lot of things are in a Storage Unit we pay for. Plus I am completely overwhelmed and I usually walk in to a room to clean and organize but I walk right back out. And the paper trail….. I make journals and ephemera. And as I have suspected for a while I went to the doctor, took a test and I am A.D.D. Not ADHD. That’s the hyper part. Ugggg
Your tiny house is now the container and the limit for how much stuff you have/keep. Don't walk into a room with the idea of 'cleaning and organizing' yet, if it's overstuffed and cluttered; instead, download and print Dana's Decluttering Steps sheet and work the room using those steps a litttle at a time, with the goal of just leaving that room better (less cluttered) than it was before. If you can do that for only 5 mins at a time, that's still progress. If possible, get hold of Dana's books and read them, too, especially Decluttering at the Speed of Life. Hope this helps.
Have you watched the video from 9 or so months ago about layers of cleaning? That one has been helpful to me. That might include boundaries on craft supplies.
Hi Kate, welcome to the neurodivergent club! I was dx’d ADHD two years ago at 60. ADD is no longer a diagnosis in the DSM-5 manual. It’s now three categories of ADHD. You may be ADHD-I (inattentive) type like me. If a person is not hyperactive you will likely fly under the radar and sadly, not get diagnosed until later in life. You CAN take your house back! I began working with Dana’s decluttering process several years ago. You just keep at it. The concepts will etch deeper into your brain as you practice. “5 minutes better” is a life changer! I know you can do this. Pick up & throw away 5 pieces of trash and congratulate yourself rather than thinking about everything you did not do.
I like the video with the pens and the cup. Whenever i need a reminder of the container concept i go back to that one. Simply genius!
I, too, love that video! I agree, it’s the best visual explanation of the container concept.

Care about my own feelings?! That's a new concept to me 😅
Shes SO right about laundry day and how it eases up the stress when some items need to be done right away. Laundry day ftw :)
Your books are game changers!
I’ve missed you!
Miss you Dana so glad your back I know you need your time family time but I need you lol always looking forward to you being back ❤😊
I bet a homeless or women's shelter would love to receive the hand knit sweaters.
