The 1959 Candidates Tournament was hosted by three cities in Yugoslavia. The first 14 rounds were played in Bled, rounds 15-21 in Zagreb, and rounds 22-28 in Belgrade. This event would select the next challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik, who had just recaptured his title in the Botvinnik - Smyslov World Championship Rematch (1958). Mikhail Tal, Svetozar Gligorić, Pal Benko, Tigran Petrosian, Friðrik Ólafsson and Bobby Fischer qualified from the Portoroz Interzonal (1958). Vasily Smyslov and Paul Keres were seeded directly into the candidates tournament on the strength of their 1-2 finish in the previous Amsterdam Candidates (1956). Harry Golombek was arbiter, and the seconds were Bent Larsen (Fischer), Yuri Averbakh, joined later by Alexander Koblents (Tal), Vladas Mikenas (Keres), Isaac Boleslavsky (Petrosian), Igor Bondarevsky (Smyslov) Aleksandar Matanovic (Gligorić), Klaus Viktor Darga and Ingi Randver Johannsson (Ólafsson), and Rudolf Maric (Benko)
The players would meet each other four times, twice in Bled and once in both Zagreb and Belgrade. In Bled, the players stayed at the Grand Hotel Toplice, the site of Alexander Alekhine's historic triumph in Bled (1931). 4 Mikhail Tal had just had his appendix removed less than two weeks earlier, but FIDE insisted he make it in time for the tournament. According to Tal, "I was not much troubled by the effects of the operation, apart from in a purely mechanical sense; during a game I did not feel inclined to stroll about ..."5 This information may have come as a surprise to Harry Golombek, who commented after Round 5 that "it is an impressive sight to see him (Tal) get up after he has made what he obviously thinks is a winning move and pace around the table like a man-eating tiger."6 It may also have surprised Bobby Fischer, who complained after his first game with Tal that whenever he "rose from the board ... he'd begin talking to the other Soviet players, and they enjoyed whispering about their or others' positions."7 Pal Benko later revealed that due to his "demanding" job in a US brokerage firm, he "didn't prepare at all" for the event, although he reckoned "I did reasonably well."8 He didn't. After the first cycle Tal, Paul Keres and Tigran Petrosian shared the lead.

the guy has become repititve and barely even seems to care about the games. His analysis has always been fishy, and so have his comments. There are two factors in his favor: First he is consistent, that is, he always uploads the newest games (and he is consistent in his errors, switching the person playing it even saying something like: "Carlsen tries to defend the e-pawn but now Carlsen goes in for the kill." Frequently mixing up squares, pieces and players ... horrible. The second factor is that he is so freaking average, that people just keep coming. xD

Years ago I played Gligoric in a simultaneous exhibition in Charleston, WV. I made a mistake in a Queen's Gambit around the 36th move and resigned a few moves later, if memory serves me correctly, lol! GM Gligoric was quite the gentleman, after beating all 40 or 50 players sans one handicapped little boy to whom he offered a draw, he discussed our game with me

Sorry about pointing out the Tal resignation in your previous video. I hope you understand it wasn't malicious. I love Tal as well, so my heart lurched when I heard "In this position, Tal resigned the game". Wonderful content as always.

Tal is pure genius because of his brilliant sacrifices. However, the magic didn't pour in into every match. Unlike Fischer, Kasparov, Capablanca, etc... Tal should never be considered an undisputed player at any point. In fact, sometimes when he lost, he really lost it. Just check out the match against H. Mecking in 1975, when he begged to trade queens in order to relieve the pressure.
it's amazing how young Bobby was. It was like he was alone playing with his grandparents. Truly brilliant game by Fischer.

I got my love for chess from my Uncle. He wanted to teach my sister but she showed no interest, and so I remember as a kid sliding into the seat at the table and asking him instead to teach me. That began a journey for me as a chess player. He was so good and analytical with his mind. I remember as a kid he would play me without his rooks and beat me every time! It was a horrible day when he died and I was crushed. After he passed, my grandmother gave me a chess set he had been working on. It was a beautiful porcelain set and he had been adding the felt circles to the bottoms of the pieces. When I got it he had only finished about half of the felt circles, so I completed them. That chess set was almost magical to me and I never lost a match when I used it. I keep it tucked away and each piece wrapped up. I eventually became the president of the Chess club at school and participated in a chess tournament of which I came in 3rd and had the opportunity to regularly spar with a rated master. I imagine my uncle looks down and smiles knowing that the game he passed on to me, is so greatly appreciated. I ended up passing what I knew to my younger brother and he ended up winning a tournament. Today, I play recreationally and each time I pull out a chess set, I remember my uncle and that one day when he took time out of his schedule to teach me. It is also amazing the community that exists within chess. Thanks for all the videos on this channel. I appreciate them!

Also, Tal, Capablanca, Sultan Khan, Kasperov, Karpov, Ivanchuk, Carlsen are also great, I even consider them better than fischer.
@Niranjan Rajesh you do realize that chess players get better with each generation due to computers. If carlsen and Fisher ever played I can guarantee u that carlsen would win. As kasparov (one of the greatest chess players I am sure u know of him) that each generation is better than the last it matters who dominated most in his era. Also Carlsens end game is the best ever

I just wanted to finally leave you a comment to say I find your channel fascinating. I've always loved games of tactics and strategy -- I play Dungeons and Dragons religiously as well as other RPGs -- but I didn't join the chess team in high school for some reason and never got into competitively playing chess. When I went back to graduate school in 2005 at the age of 35 at UWM in Milwaukee, WI, I tried playing games with the chess team there, but, one day, few people showed up, and one of the guys on the team played two of us at the same time and beat us both badly, and I never showed up again after that.
It's really fascinating seeing your analyses and thought-process on the game. I had always thought about planning/tactics in chess in terms of the number of moves ahead of which one thought -- I thought one of the measures of a good computer chess program was how many moves in advance it thought -- but I now see the number of moves in advance of which one should think is variable, and one should take a sequence of moves to its sort-of "logical conclusion", however many moves in advance that may be -- 8 is not a large number of moves in advance of which to think, although that number seemed astronomical to me before I saw your channel. Chess game "analysis" is a fascinating endeavor (I'm told I use that Mr. Spock adjective too much).

A Bobby Fischer Story
In 2009x, while in Rekjavík, I sought out a seat in some downtown bookstore where I'd heard Fischer would sit and nap, pretending to read, frequently before died. And one brisk summer after noon, and there I sat, held a book in my lap, and napped.
"Who do you think you are, Bobby Fischer?" came the voice of Gunnar Someonesson.
I bought that book, and 33 others (the Guðni Jonsson 1932 edition of the Icelandic Sagas and Eddas), and he drove me home down Laugavegr in his Iroc blastic "Cant Truss it" by Public Enemy.
Without a doubt Bobby Fisher is one of the most greatest chess player and one of my favorite

Fischer's speed of attack was a generation ahead of his time. Gligoric's play is just so slow in comparison.

More relevantly though, my comment was not about speed of "move", it was about speed of "attack" ... and that absolutely matters. For example: The main reason the Sicilian Dragon is now largely dead is because white's attack tends to kick in faster than black's

You mean in 3 moves?
At 5:20 you mention that black could go Qc5 to open the 6th rank for rook. That would be a blunder because queen could take and after pawn takes, bishop is hanging, or after rook takes pawn is hanging.
