- The following is the Aug. 14, 2023, relinquishment of office ceremony for Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Navy Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the vice chief of naval operations, will become the acting CNO. Her nomination to succeed Gilday is on hold in the Senate.

@@1anre Promotion on merit is wise. Meritocracies tend to outperform nepotism and dictatorships. Purchasing commissions in the British Army led to some real plonkers heading the troops in the past, though usually the NCO's were able to steer the conflict in the right direction... Sadly now we've relapsed as evidenced by the RAF not recruiting if you are a WASP no matter how good you are. Hallmark for disaster, as we saw in Basra when the British just ran away in the night.

@@1anre White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant. I'm not an American but the original 'Pilgrim Father's' were WASP's as indeed were all the US Presidents until Kennedy. The 'Daughter's of the Revolution' are WASP's and I believe it is an American (USA) term. This is why I moot 1776 was a civil war, not a war of independence. It was Brits vs the Crown. No different to ours in the UK in 1642.

I always dreamt of wearing a US sailor uniform
As a navy vet who served in a fighter squadron during the Vietnam war, I find this appointment troubling to say the least. If push comes to shove with Russia or China we will be in a negative position at the get go.

As of mid-2023, current 4-star generals include 39 active duty four-star generals and four-star admirals. What a joke. There was approximately 20 during WWII.
Why don;t you study how our modern day setup is as opposed to comparing to WW2?

@@rchapman6803 The bureaucracy is much worse today than it was in 1945 hence all of the extra 4 star positions. I'm not sure if gkm 072159 is taking into account the number of those 4-star Admirals and Generals were promoted to 5-star rank (a rank which only exists in wartime). There were four Fleet Admirals and five Generals of the Army at the end of WW2. Bottom line is that there were fewer four and five star generals and admirals at the end of WW2 managing MILLIONS more US servicemen under arms than there are today in the peacetime All-volunteer force.
Something is very wrong with our military now. Lots of brass and no balls.

I miss the time when we had Ernest J. King as our CNO, last I check we beaten the Japanese Navy with him in charge
Although I think that was due to other factors. King himself was useless. E.g. resistance to convoys as he loathed the British, etc.
@@johnbobson1557 "King was useless" I guess you know stuff about USN during WWII a lot more than I do. The fact that Operation Watchtower or Guadalcanal Campaign was King's brainchild, he planned for the invasion and even shoved MacArthur from having control of the Guadalcanal area so the area would be in Navy's jurisdiction. Guadalcanal is USN baptism of fire in terms of surface warfare and amphibious operations, everyone seeing Nimitz as the true hero since he won Midway, the central Pacific drive, Okinawa and Iwo etc. King was the guy in the background, he also pushed Leahy, FDR and Joint Chiefs so that some of American naval assets to be redeployed into the South Pacific, hence you see USS Washington being retasked into Guadalcanal from North Atlantic task (when the British pushed for more American fast battleships to guard against German battleship Tirpitz). King maneuvered the Joint Chiefs and FDR's Europe First policy so that in November 1942 the USN got that turning point against IJN in Guadalcanal, where USS Washington sunk IJN Kirishima, the USN fast battleship that King retasked from Europe to Pacific.
King did more than anyone thought he did in the Pacific, especially in terms of Naval assets, logistics and later in 1943-1945 retasking unused warships from Europe to Pacific, since both Italy and Germany doesn't have any significant threat to the rest of the Allies in Europe and he tasked these ships to Pacific.

When you put women in charge of the protection of the country it is the worst thing possible, or maybe it's the best thing possible? I think about a mother lion .. example: 'Golda Meir', former Prime Minister of Israel. Women are courageous, often more so than men. Womens' judgement respects 'LIFE'. I am a man; all of this is a recent revelation to me, but I believe there's a lot of truth in it. How many young men wouldn't be in military graveyards if women had been in charge 'on both sides'? I know I am simple-minded on all this, but truth is always 'simple'. Anyhow .. thank you for reading this.
