I rent so I can't really do much and this packs a HUGE punch to the size area. Yea I was trying to come up with a way to start the waterfall without having to drill through the rock and it occurred to me that if its in a corner, nobody can see the back end. Just note that the liner goes all the way behind it in case any water does trickle out the back, its still contained in the liner. But all you have to hide is the very top where I put that split in the pipe :)

Looks really cool, but is there a reason you don't simply leave a small pond at the end. Is it simple and aesthetics choice or is there a benefit in maintenance or something.
Good question, ponds need a little more maintenance and lose water to evaporation easier. The river rock on the surface helps filter out larger debris like sticks and leaves so you don’t need a filter on the pump.
Love it the look. My only concern is someone stepping on the bucket area and falling through it. Doesn’t look like it would support a toddler stepping on it. I’d go with something much stronger to be safe, like plastic grating. Also can use pvc pipe across to create stronger supports to step on.
I love this project! Not only does it look great but it's low cost. One question, how do you know when makeup water is needed so the water level doesn't get too low not to burn your pump up?
the water will start looking bubbly when the water gets low. I've ran them dry before and the pump survived. Some pumps have build in shutoffs for when they overheat.

Yea I used them to hold the plastic at the top which holds the river rock. Then yea i was able to put the pump in one of the buckets. Worth noting I punched a few holes in each bucket to allow waterflow.

Glad you like them! Depends on where you are. I dig up rocks from my parents property. Some areas have rock quarry's you can shop at. Some Garden and Landscape Supply stores sell rocks by the weight and may even drill a hole for you to use in a fountain.
With how the water falls on the edge of the rocks, how are you ensuring water isn't getting out? Just a large pond liner ? Also whats the maintenance on this thing ?
Matthew is right the pond liner extends out past all sides of the rock. Maintenance should just be hosing it off periodically to keep it clean and top off the water as some will inevitably be lost to evaporation. The river rock should filter all large obstructions so I don’t know that you would need to access the pump much at all.
Hey Travis so I'm trying to do something similar (a rockery steam style one like in one of your other videos) I'm struggling with the concept of how you reach the pump to clean after you have installed it do you have to remove all the rocks to remove the "lid" to gain access? Also why do you use two tubs? Thanks 👍 cool video
Yea so the tubs have holes in them to allow water flow. They're just to hold the platform and rock up out of the reservoir. I used two just for more volume. In this project, yes the river rock has to be moved to access the pump, but in other projects Ive made the pumps easier to access by putting them in containers with lids, or putting just 1 larger flat rock on top of it. Realistically though you should not need to access the pump very often. If you want to send me pictures of your project I can maybe help you brainstorm! :) best of luck . .

The grey plastic that you cut to lay over the buried tubs is it 1 piece just laid on top?. if so doesn't it block the water that needs to go back in to the sunken tubs when you put the weight of the pebbles on it?

The plastic I just cut to cover the hole and rest on the buckets like a lid. The plastic in those tubs is pretty flexible but also hardy. Though If the hole was any bigger than the size of those buckets I would have used something stronger and more rigid. So I just doubled up the plastic for thickness and it extended out past all sides of the reservoir and kept the river rock from falling in. I was able to stand on it. It’s something I’ve been trying, in order to save on cost.

You could also use a lid on the buckets with holes. One acting as a pump vault. This would be much stronger than the plastic over the top.

I move big stones solo all the time with a hand truck dolly. If they are shaped decent you can get +1000lb ers with 2 people and 2 dollies.

you got it right. I drilled a few holes in them though to make them porous. They just hold water volume. More volume is better.

The liner is spread pretty wide and goes below and outside of the rock. Should catch it all

A 100 lb woman here moved a 350 lb rock with 4 inch pipe and 2x4s… :)

are you running extension cords to the fountains that aren't using solar??
Often yes. But this one had an outlet within reach. The cord on the pump was 10’ long.
