    Ooo wow!! I have done this experiment last year.. I added diffrent coloured plastic paper to all the holes of the disc diaphram... I really love the different filtering effects, especially while observing pond water..
    I thought of upgrading it to polarising filter.. But never paid enough attention to that idea..
    But I will try this now.. Not even watched the video yet.. As always liked before watching..

    Wow what a nice little rotating filter holder. I wish my swift 350B came with that. I tried creating coloured circular filters out of coloured plastic but it would of been so much easier with that rotating filter holder!

      The 350B has a proper condenser. With that one you can actually do much more, such as darkfield etc. The rotating filter holder might look convenient, but the functionality of the 350B condenser and filter holder is actually better.

      Upper, touch screen, or inner screen? I have one non working tablet and can use it.
      (I am not so much into tech, to know it myself)

    Cool! I'm gonna try and use polarized filters on my simple micro, not sure if it's going to be of any use though because I work with print materials and reflected light with 1k~ magnification or so, but who knows, might find some weird stuff!

    Maybe it would have been better to put the second polarizing filter under the ocular? That way you can rotate it freely, without unscrewing your objective! ;)

    Hello Microbehunter,
    I was wondering what other purposes does the black ring you used to rotate the objective on the microscope objective at 2:36 do? I sometimes notice it on some objectives on microscopes (like your Olympus CH40) but not on others (my Swift sw380b) . Is there a particular advantage for the black ring over other objectives, or is it just a particular design pattern? Thanks a lot.

    Just got this same microscope just yesterday 🙂
    Will absolutely do this, as I had the feeling those holes made not much difference when rotating.
    P.s. can I put the second filter simply atop the eyepiece?

      The problem is that the background will not be completely dark then, because the optics of the eyepiece depolarize the light. I tried this if course, before making the video and it does not work as well. You can also try to put it into the bottom side of the eyepiece, where the pointing arrow is.

    One idea is to scan the plastic disc to make a 3D model of it and 3D print it. By doing this one can design and create their own filters. Even changing the sizes if the holes in the design. That's my eventual goal when I can afford a 3D printer.

    Can you make videos on like how to add filters like darkfield and rieghnberg on simple microscopes like that one please?

      This might be quite difficult in this microscope because it does not have a condenser.

    Cant we fix the polarise filter in the bottom of the eye peice.. it seems more convenient to rotate the eyepeice instead of objective..

      He tried this in a different video, but the prism in the head of the microscope seemed to mess up the polarization and it didn't work well.

      There is a mirror in this microscope, but it still somehow messes up the polarization.

    Cool. But wouldn't it be better to put a polarizer (loosely) over the light source and rotate it--maybe rig a little cap or something. Rotating your objective doesn't sound like that great an idea to me.

      You need one polarizing filter below the specimen and one above it. If there are optical elements between them, then it could be that they de-polarize the light and reduce the effect.

    Do you know if halogen or LED light source makes a difference for the polarization?

      Makes no difference, as both light sources are not polarized, when they are produced. Halogen is much more hot and maybe the filter becomes hotter.

    Why not add it into the eye piece you can take 10x eyepiece apart and put it inbetween

    Does it give the same effect if you rotate the bottom polarizing filter, instead of the top one? In my filter holder, its easy to make it rotate, so it would be a nicer solution instead of rotating the objective.

      You can rotate either one, it does not matter. All you have to do is bring both filters into a crossed position (so that it becomes dark). If you are able to make both filters rotate, then even better, because then you can change the colors while the background remains dark.

    Hi sir I bought the other optical swift the cheapest one for introductory/kids microscope with your affiliate link , most of the specimens I am viewing are transparent so it camouflages with the background , what can I do to see more contrast between the specimen and the background?

      If you reduce the size of one of the holes in the filter ring by putting a cardboard with a small hole over it, then this reduces the amount of light but at the same time increases the contrast. Eg. 1mm diameter hole.
