    Cher hitting herself in the face with a pie. Nope, didn't expect to see THAT when I woke up this morning.

    Cher and the writers seemed to have a lot of fun with satire in their sketches. They would always be poking fun at something, whether it was TV itself or the whole period that they were living in at the time. Plus, I would wager that at one time, before doing variety shows, Cher was most likely inspired by other woman entertainers who did character humor, like Lily Tomlin and Carol Burnett. She emulated them, creating her own characters and having a blast with wigs and costumes and makeup. She had lots of talent, and good timing, with a fun sense of humor.

    This is really cool. She’s making fun of not having an audience for this episode in the beginning. The crew laughs along. Love that

    There's a lack of audience response on this particular audio/video track shown here because there was no audience for the taping. However, this particular track is pre-air, before final post-production. The final audio track was remixed with audience reactions added in, both applause track and laugh track, for the program that aired on 11/23/75.

    I can still not fathom that David Bowie has died. He always seemed so wonderfully thin, healthy and in control of his life (albeit that he was a heroin addict at a period of his life).
    But none of us may control disease and mortality beyond a certain point. And I say this as one who was recently diagnosed with cancer myself.
    The deaths of Bowie and Prince within the same year certainly dealt a real blow to popular and rock music. And there are fewer left of truly genius musicians as it is. Bob Dylan, Deborah Harry and Chris Stein (of Blondie), Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Joe Perry and Steve Tyler (of Aerosmith), Iggy Pop and Patti Smith are among those, thankfully, still alive and working. Some might also add Paul Weller (of The Jam and Style Council) as a vital musician.
    Without Joe Strummer, The Clash is really no longer a going proposition in terms of great songwriting. I don't know what has become of Talking Heads' David Byrne and his former comrades. And despite occasional reunions of the two surviving members (David Johansen and Syl Sylvain), The New York Dolls lost a lot of their heart after guitarist/songwriter Johnny Thunders died in 1992, and hadn't really been together for nearly two decades even before that. And The Sex Pistols are basically an oldies act.
    Of the 1950s school of original rock & rollers, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Don Everly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard are also still alive, but haven't composed, performed and/or recorded much in recent years.
    I realize I have omitted some genius musicians known for their impressive and influential songwriting, as well for performance and recording. Naturally, there are still many great performers not known for their songwriting--such as Diana Ross, Ronnie Spector, Tina Turner, etc. And I don't consider rap/hip-hop to be genuine music, so much as rhythm and verse with some sampling. But I tried to recall most of the best-known artists who are also composers as well performers, who are still among the living.

      That's because this episode and episode 19 were filmed together without a studio audience present. That's why there's a lack of audience response because the only responses came from crew members of the show lol.

    • @gymnastix
      @gymnastix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Were these shows actually broadcast that way originally, without the live audience? Another poster here has stated that audience responses (applause and laughter) were added in later.
      I used to watch "Cher" pretty regularly when it originally aired on CBS (Sunday evenings, as I recall), as I was a junior in high school in 1974-75.
      From where did you obtain this episode--presumably from an over-the-air rerun (on VH-1, etc.)?

    • @gymnastix
      @gymnastix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have some episodes of "Cher" (without the counter yours include), recorded OTA from VH-1 in the 1990s. And they would probably still be in pretty good shape, on VHS tapes with very good-to-excellent resolution (even if recorded on EP speed, and some may be in SP). But they are packed away in boxes, in storage.

      GetTV is currently airing select episodes of the Cher Show right now every Monday night for the rest of this month (episode 25 with David Bowie was shown last night) and will most likely continue into next month as well. Hopefully episode 20 will be one of the selected shows they will rerun.

    So lazy of them to do the show with no studio audience. That drastically cuts the amount of time and work required. Cher is very charming in those scenes in her house where it's just her taking. I think, beside Carol Burnett, Cher is the best example of the variety show format. I think it's better than Sonny and Cher. They seemed to take the music more seriously on this show than others.

    • @lh2170
      @lh2170 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s because of CBS. After Sonny’s solo show flopped they had little faith in hers and gave it considerably less promo & funding compared to their other programming at the time.

      "Pirated", ha! Wrong, wrong, wrong. And calm down with all the alarmed punctuation.
      You never heard of a dress rehearsal, or a taping without an audience? Loads of shows in this era didn't actually have people watching during the taping day. The crew added all the prerecorded laughs, cheers and applause later in post production--- this was done on Donny & Marie, Brady Bunch Hour, and many more programs. This Cher video here is merely what it looks like *before * that audio "magic" is done. Only a few variety shows had a genuine crowd reacting in the seats, like The Carol Burnett Show.
