Two great champions at their peak! These matches were so great.

Amazing how Borg recovers from what was for him an embarrassing time and he comes back to win the match. We often forget he was 15-40 down in the 5th set in the Wimbledon 80 final, after losing a bucket load of match points, too.
He then never lost a serve and won the match.
At his peak his mental attitude was second to none. I do agree though even he could not continue and it seemed like it had all become too tiring for him.
Pity really that he did not consider doing what modern players do and just play to his strengths - clay and slow surfaces - then cut back on the faster surfaces so McEnroe could not overdo/overhype the rather one sided stats of their meets - seeing as Mac really was not a threat to Borg on clay, not even an opponent!

Grass was the fastest surface of the all. And he won plenty of times there. That is actually the incredible thing, that he dominated on the fastest and slowest surface. And the Australian Open he didn't really play in. They were also on grass at the time.

To me, this was the apex of the sport of tennis: McEnroe v Borg. Contrasting styles and contrasting personalities, but mutual respect. They ended up 7-7 in their careers, but that statistic is somewhat misleading. None of their matches were on clay, Borg's best surface. McEnroe wasn't particularly competitive on clay. He didn't need to be, but it does in my opinion indicate that Borg was the more complete player.

Jimmy Connors put the sport on the map, and when he was playing at his very best he beat them both.

@@lawrencegarrison3792 yes connors did and on All surfaces. He missed or couldn't Play the french open because he was banned. 74 through 78 which was his prime. Through 78 Connors had a winning head to head on both players. Connors was even against borg on clay. In 74 he won 3 grand slam titles but couldn't play the french all because he signed with world team tennis. Also connors holds the distinction of winning the us open on 3 surfaces clay, grass and hard court. In the middle to late 70s us open switched surfaces until finally keeping hard court. Connors also holds the all time singles titles with 109 victories.

@@ag358 I was a huge JC fan but I was very frustrated that after the 78 US Open Borg had everything Connors had plus a much better serve and much better consistency hence Jimmy was in Borg's pocket until Borg retired in '82. Jimmy had a much better record against McEnroe post-78 and even beat him in the final at Wimbledon 1982. Jimmy was a fantastic player and if he had a great serve like say Tanner he could well have been the GOAT.

Apparently Borg was a lot like McEnroe when he was young and was suspended from a tennis club because of his behaviour, he loved tennis so much he promised to change his ways and became the "Ice Man" on court, looks like Borg went full circle as it wasn't that long after this he called it a day.

If I was Borg I would of pulled the hairlip chair umpire's right loafer shoe off and just walked back to the clubhouse with it. Imagine the headlines..LOL!! I would of forfeited the match just to do that and show him up.
