Great clear explaination. Tesla once attached a pocket alarm clock sized device to a street lamp post and tuned its frequency so it would produce a "thump" at resonance. After a few minutes of thumping, the effect was so great the 3 storey building beside the lamp post began to shake. The people inside came running out and some called the cops thinking it was an earth quake. Tesla quietly removed his device, put it in his pocket and walked away. When I heard that story, I was amazed at the power of resonance.
orangedac it was not the size of a pocket alarm.. you need to look into that more, there are even photos of it.. but it did fit in his jacket pocket. it was a steam powered oscillator and he has patents on it
Great simile on mechanical resonators and electrical resonators. But the most significant component in the Tesla conventional circuit is the spark gap and non-linearity. You are applying power to the input of the first transformer at sixty Hertz. The second transformer does not work very well in stepping up that frequency to the very high levels you desire. It is most efficient at very high frequencies. Frequency synthesis in electrical systems require non-linearity to produce harmonics that operate the resonance of the LC tank system. The spark gap provides that non-linearity. LCR circuits have very little non-linearity. Fundamental circuits concepts are that they are either linear on non-linear. Linear circuits do not produce harmonics (Fundamental concept here). Also I would suggest you swap the positions of the capacitor and spark gap. This will decouple the 60 Hertz primary transformer windings from the much higher frequency resonance secondary system and improve efficiency ( producing higher voltage of the harmonic frequency) and will cause the first transformer to run at a cooler temperature. I have some experience with Tesla coils building my first one in 1971. I love em...
When I was active in a TC club the popular approach was to put an RF choke (ferrite toroid) on the transformer output. Same thing: keep the RF out of the transformer.
Hmm are you saying I can use this to get 60Hz on the output of the secondary and if I want higher voltages on the secondary I would move the cap for high freq? If my NST puts out 30kHz, 9kV at 30mA I can get to higher freq by moving the cap and with cap size I can reach the natural resonant freq on the primary?
What about the rodin coil? any thoughts? does that design automatically make a "gap'? I'd like to throw a frequency into a rodin coil and test it... not a battery but a frequency... then add a battery if maybe .. then try a second frequency to make a harmonic or resonance or both..... probably don't even need a spark plug, I'm guessing. What do ya think? may have to connect the beginning of winding 1 to the end of winding 2 on the rodin coil to make it a geometrically designed tesla coil.... then we may need a spark plug to get a gap... I dunno. What say you?
That's a whole video on it's own, and certainly not a beginner-level one. I'd be happy to get out some scopes and HV probes and do a video on that in the future though.
Very good! Convert the "heavy bag" coils to opposing partnered output with opposing magnetic fields that have the effect of reducing impedance to zero and thus increasing inductance to Infinity(?). Have another spark gap on a deep ground like a well, and feed large caps to provide pulsed dc current on demand which can be converted to A/C or regular dc as needed
Thanks for this, showing it in this way helped me understand resonance and spark gaps.I have dyslexia and words and reading don't work for me,as well as this did.subscribed cheers....
In your demo with the heavy bag and baseball bat, it would be most efficient if you hit the bag at the middle / bottom of the swing (vs. you seemed to be backing up to hit it almost at the peak of the swing where it is slowest). Assuming the impulse from the bat is the same for both, hitting when the bag is at peak velocity maximizes energy transfer. So it will be quieter as well due to a lower velocity difference between bat and bag. Nice video on the Tesla coil too. Thanks.
Thankyou . I finally understand it now. But leads to more questions say like out of a microwave Transformer UPS the voltage does it also up the Watts and the amps or is it just the voltage
Could you explain to me how the shape and resonate electric frequencies of electro magnets can effect electrolysis of water and acceleration in a vacuum?
@7:30 approx that instance in an electrolysis of water situation might create a pulse of hydrogen and oxygen creation? Given the anode and cathode are platinum for instance? I am working on some things, and was interested in your explanations... I have made several prototypes which i wont explain, that this is relevant to...
Well explained, but it probably would work better, if you add a high voltage diode after the secondary of the first left secondary coil...so the cap can really charge up in a few cycles...
Is it possible to have the spark cap points in a vacuum? Do you need air to jump the two points on a Tesla coil? Excellent video. Very well done in explaining resonance.
it can also discharge capacitor with a neon bulb transformer, when spark gap will not fire. maybe its a good idea to put rectifying diode between neon transformer and a spark gap to ensure capacitor charging only one direction.
I really liked the video. I'm not too sure if a spark gap Tesla coil really resonates you're basically just forcing resonance with a spark gap very messy not really resonating. maybe you want to look at a slayer exciter circuit because that definitely resonates. I have videos showing how they work and how to build both of them if you're interested
(2/2) It is massive radio frequency oscillations - created in the primary circuit for the brief moment that an arc is present in the spark gap - that cause the secondary circuit to resonate, not the frequency at which the spark gap fires (audible, ~120 Hz or something), as you so often describe it to be.
It would be interesting to hear more about the properties of the plasma in the spark gap and oscillations while it is conducting. And while the plasma is conducting the capacitor will not charge so there will be a delay before it can do so again. What would these times typically be?
I take it you are referring to a toroidal terminal capacitance at the top of the Tesla coil's secondary winding? The geometry of the capacitor is not really important. It could also be spheroidal. But the resonant frequency of the secondary coil with its capacitor should be close to that of the primary coil and its capacitor for best results. Which is why we need to know about resonance and the coupling of the two circuits.
i love how this dude carries everything but the kitchen sink on his belt, including a Glock. :D reminds me of most of my engineer friends. i like him already!
Some nice explanations. I would like to point out that Tesla says the transformer (magnifier) is not transverse nor electromagnetic. Tesla used oscillating current and rejected Einstein mass energy equivalence. Teslas patent also features a third coil. This is important, I feel, due to the complex dimensionality of magneto dielectric mechanics in resonating oscillating systems such as this. . (The dimensionality of the devices wave output interaction, without the third coil wildly differs) :)
I've been trying to understand the correct resonant frequency of my circuit. The problem is, everyone seems to be more concerned with the resonant frequency of the secondary of the Tesla Coil and not the primary of the Tesla Coil or the secondary of the NST. I can't seem to figure out what my capacitor value should be, how close the spark gap should be, what the inductance of my secondary on the NST is and the resonance of the primary of the tesla coil and how all that goes together. Like I said, no one seems to cover this in detail.
when i am wounding the secondary coil, the cu wire got sheared ! now if i solder it and carry on the process will it affect the inductance and the arc length of my tesla coil ?
hi from england could it be possible to transfer back from the end hv back onto the 120v to massively esscalaye with diode to stop back tracking to hv.also would you explain how to find resonance frequencies .andrija puharich states phased loop lock ? thanks melvin
When you mentioned that you hold public demonstrations, someone is going to point out the following: "You claim that the AC waveform from the secondary of the neon sign transformer is charging up the capacitor. Fine, but - the secondary of that transformer is *alternating* between positive and negative voltage polarity. That being the case - since the capacitor being charged is electrically connected to that changing, alternating voltage - how can you say 'the capacitor charges up'? When the top of the neon sign secondary is POSITIVE, the left side of the capacitor is also POSITIVE - and thus the voltage on the capacitor is built up with positive polarity on the left plate and NEGATIVE polarity on the right plate. BUT THEN top of the secondary of the neon sign transformer switches polarity and becomes NEGATIVE - as all transformer secondaries (and primaries) do. At that time, the left plate of the capacitor is subjected to that NEGATIVE polarity. *WHY DOESN'T THE CAPACITOR DISCHARGE EVERY 1/2 CYCLE OF THE SINE WAVE ACROSS THE NEON SIGN TRANSFORMER?* You're going to get that question at some point. You cannot reply by saying "there's a diode blocking that from happening" unless your Tesla coil circuit has a diode. And you can't say "there's a big enough resistor so that in 5 RC time constants, there's not enough time for the capacitor to discharge so it holds its charge" either, unless - again - your Tesla coil has such a resistor. I mention this because I taught STEM classes in college for 5 years and figure you guys will get that question at some point - always good to know what the answer is. . .
You will find if the speed you hit it at and the top speed of the bag is the time you hit it then the result will be far more effecient as the difference in the speed of the 2 mechanical apparatus will determine the absorbance of the energy . Think slapping water with your hand. You can disperses a lot more water with a gentle push in a pool but slapping the water is very ineffecieng .
It charges both ways so if designed right it should be charging and discharging both directions. I've thought about this when it comes to flyback SGTC's and how people use HV diodes but it's probably because of the driving frequency. Just easier to get only a positive charge in order to bridge the gap.
You just gave me an idea... but first, the question! lol can you explain the law or process, or w/e is that says what is supposed to happen when 2 objects with the same resonant frequency meet each other? Either at the same speed or when one isnt moving and the other is. Does the same resonance cancel out the kinetic energy? Or does it amplify it? If it cancels it out, then what do you do to get the best energy responce with an object to another object with different resonance? Im no genius, but i think a lot and get ideas to experiment with A LOT. My mind is always trying to go 10 steps ahead lol. I actually have a lot of other questions regarding this field of study, particularly with electro magnetism and frequency of sound/ resonance. I have theories that newly found science proves. I really believe the secret to our Energy crisis, Travel, hell, maybe even teleportation/time travel can all be improved/invented/re-discovered with those two things, electro magnetism and frequency of sound. I really am going to try to start to build protypes soon of projects in small scale to start testing out different theories. There is energy everywhere, we just can't see it. Science also proved quantum entanglement, which was an awesome discovery and also a big puzzle piece in this giant energy puzzle we all seem to be trying to put together... Wireless power WILL work, we just need to discover it... again in my opinion... as soon as i can start and finish building this 3d printer then its go time.. well, then id need to find the time for my experiments too... arg ... 🤔🕒🔫
I have a question that is probably very silly - please explain why the capacitor continues to charge through the negative cycle of the AC. I would have thought that the capacitor charges for half the cycle and discharges for the other half and so there is no net build up of charge. Obviously that's not the case, since it does have a build up, but it would be great if someone explained why. Thanks in advance.
Even this acclaimed video lacks a most important aspect of Tesla Coils. The loose couplig between primary and secondary, otherwise you won't get resonant rise and high voltage.
Its similar to the working of an SCR ! the capacitor chargers till the rated plasma breakdown voltage in 1st +ve half cycle and discharges in the same cycle by giving the impulse !!!
I had the same question...I think there is more difficult tuning involved than would be interesting enough to describe...or no one really understands anything like me

Best explanation of resonant frequency ever.
Also remember that the diameter and smoothness of the toroid will control the breakout voltage of the system. This is an important consideration.

The resonance created by the winding capacitance of the 50kv coil is significant
in determining the resonant frequency that appears at 50kv output.

please explain Rupert501's question. If we don't use a diode then how do we get a build up of charge on the cap?

What if you have the capacitors balanced on each side of the spark gap/primary coil? Better? Worse? Indifferent?
Is it possible to have the spark cap points in a vacuum? Do you need air to jump the two points on a Tesla coil?
Excellent video. Very well done in explaining resonance.
Really? hummm

Great video! Very good explanation of how resonance works. Thanks for posting. God bless in Jesus' name!
Very good explanation :)

Thank you for the great lesson on Resonance!

what would happen if we didnt have a spark gate? could we say that the boxing bag would get a constant hit/velocity as long as there is a current?
