  • This is a look back at Jim Hale's AXO Sports America. AXO was one of the most influential gear companies of the late eighties and early nineties. From the time of their inception in 1984 through their sale in 1998 they were one of the most high-profile brands in the industry.
A trendsetter throughout the eighties and nineties, AXO sponsored motocross icons like Damon Bradshaw, Jeff Stanton and Jeff Ward to countless wins and AMA Motocross and Supercross titles.

Love this. I’m not even into MX, back in the early 90s as a boy I was desperate to get a crosser. Couldn’t afford it. Nearest I got was an old 70s enduro bike for riding on the footpaths out in the country. I remember flicking through all the ads looking at all the gear. This takes me back to my yooooth ha. Please do more on other brands like Thor, answer etc.

In 85 I was in my early 20s and Greg Blechman lived across the street, he was good friends with Jim Hale and was sponsored by AXO. He would set me up with gear at cost. I took advantage of this deal and had a dozen full sets of AXO gear for many years. Now sadly both those guys are gone way too soon. RIP

I was in moto retail in the early 80's in SoCal. We sold O'Neal stuff including the boots. One day Jim Hale showed up at the store and eventually told us he was taking AXO boots from O'Neal and starting his own company - AXO Sport America. We liked the guy and the products were good and I eventually started working for them around 1987. I thought the contribution of Kenny Safford (I think that's right) as art director was key to their success though he's not mentioned here. I moved to AXO Cycling later but left after it became obvious nobody's heart was into that sport (little did they know, right?) and into bicycle retail. Through the grapevine I heard the success of MechanixWear was so massive Hale basically gave away the entire moto biz to rake in the cash with a glove that would soon be sold in every auto parts store on earth. RIP Jim.

Great video, have purchased a AXO, couple of sweatshirt and 2 pairs of pants at BULLUCK'S DEPARTMENT STORE which I love it ( casual clothing) I love thier 1987 motocross jersey not mention it actress HEATHER THOMAS in the film called " CYCLONE ". She was so hot using that AXO SPORT JERSEY throughout the film. I regret it for not buying it 😪 Throughout the 80's I was in to bicycles from BMX to FREESTYLE to MOUNTAIN BIKE I'll never forget in 1987 that AXO SPORT clothing they on top the game, but sadly they close their doors in 2020 due to the pandemic and now there making a comeback but not like before there more on to regular motorcycle.
They had their kicks throughout the 80's, 90’s all the way up to 2020.

This was a awesome flashback!!! I worked at Bob's Cycle Supply in the early 90's and lived in AXO clothing, my nickname was actually Sport because of AXO. Funny story, Jim was good friends with the owners of Bob's and would ship us boxes and boxes of used gear from the pro's and seconds.....it was like Christmas when they showed up. Still have a couple jerseys left over and will email you a couple of awesome retro pics. Thanks again for the flashback!! Jason " Sport"

Another good one! I was an AXO guy for a few years in the mid to late 80’s. My personal progression was JT Racing, Fox, Sinisalo, AXO, Answer and back to FOX. From the mid to late 1970’s thru the 1980’s.

JT was my gear sponsor in the early 80's and then I got picked up by AXO in 86. Gear was great for the time and they set you up with plenty of it.

A decision Jim Hale made in the latter 80's that helped get AXO launched into dealerships nation wide was his exclusive distribution agreement with Tucker Rocky. His aggressive sales spiffs and relationship with Tucker Rocky's extensive sales force enabled AXO to grow from a start up to a major player in the off road clothing market.

I barely remember that first AXO boot with the high front plastic piece on leather. You think it is on the ugly side, but I think they look pretty nice. If I ever start riding again, I would use them if AXO produced them again. $139.00. Those were the days man, those were the days, and I am glad I (and all of us here probably), experienced those days.
You sir, do a great job of keeping those days fresh in our memory. I am not sure what that is worth to us, but I know I can't buy it anywhere.
Hmmm, if we can only sell those memories to people who have not experienced that era of dirt bikes,---the world would be a better place. :)

Watched this all the way through, I loved axo gear and searched and searched for some hinged axo kneepads a couple of months back ( got em and they are still brill to wear ) 1990s to 2000s had the helmet, boots, mostly blue white gear, pentagon chest protector was the best around, loved this vid and cheers for doing it 👍

Great video! I thought AXO went down hill much sooner. The graphics were terrible from the 90’s on. I had their Andre M boots loved those and the 29 gloves. Still my favorite.

  • @eastbaymauiboy

Really great presentation!. I was a HUGE AXO fan from about 89 to 94...but man, this went from super fun to pretty depressing lol. I was head to toe AXO. I had the Turbo Plus boots, which I really loved. I think I had the Super belt II and the Series 29 gloves, but maybe they were later gen. Definitely had the 125ST Kevlar pants and Comp 2 jersey, everything mostly red, white and black tho. I sometimes bought older stuff that the Moto shops had on sale. I loved saving money and I was just woods and trail mashing, not racing, so I didn't really 'need' to keep up with the Jonses. I miss that shit :_(

I liked AXO so much in the 80s, my parents wouldnt let me get a bike, but i ordered myself an AXO Super Plus jersey, back in about '88. It was dope AF, but it was hot, with a mock turtleneck and 50/50 poly construction. I think i stupidly gave it away to Goodwill sometime in the early 90s

I have a friend about 60 years old now whos mother would not let him buy a dirt bike either. He chased the older kids on dirt bikes with his bicycle as best he could. Than at about the age of 10, he put together his own bike with used spare parts he found, got it running and was riding in the front yard. His mother saw him ant thought, (correctly), "He made the thing, I can't take it away from him." (which is more correct than most people understand). From that day to today, he became a productive man in manufacturing, (and cuts all of Indian's tins, {tanks fenders and the such, street bike lingo}, today for one job), with a fantastic family in a very nice home. I just wanted to share that story. It happened because of his great human spirit to achieve, and because of dirt bikes. How can a man be a better person? :)

This is neither here no there, but I still have a Damon Bradshaw autograph team Yamaha jacket. I got him to autograph it at a race in Denver in the early 90's. Also, I personally never liked wearing a jersey or MX pants because I didn't like the idea of wearing a costume to ride a motorcycle. Plus, I always thought loud colored jerseys and MX pants were too gaudy and pretentious.
