Whenever we hear the Lord’s name taken in vain, it is good to bow the head and say silently, “Blessed be the name of Jesus”. This way it can become a prayer on our part.

I confess this pretty much every time that I go to confession.
When I do curse God’s name, always in a moment of distress, I respond by making the sign of the cross and praying either “Glory be to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen”, or “glory to You, our God, glory to You”, or the Jesus Prayer (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, the sinner).

She said, " Ms. Ella you are taking the Lord's name in vain." Truth be told I have been unknownly taking His name in vain for years and I am so grateful for her telling me the truth because after she told me she admitted that she didn't won't to because she wasn't sure how I would response but she said God told her to tell me. We are called to be worshippers of his Holy name and, even correct when we hear the Lord's name being used in vain. His name is all too frequently being used. Everytime we use his name we need to remember that. We need to evangelize and utter God's name only when it is used properly.

Since have returned to confession on a regular basis, for the most part, I have corrected myself of the very bad "habit" of saying the "Oh my G..." Now when I accidentally say it I immediately notice and am sorry I did say it. Then I go to confession and I accuse myself of taking the Lord's Name in vain. Since I returned to confession I am hyper aware of how grave the sin is and it now bugs me a lot when my wife says it. I used to fear confession. Now, thanks to the Holy Spirit's help returning to confession, I LOVE confession. It a GREAT grace that God has given us to help us become better persons! Knowing you have to confess your sins week after week is a good deterrent from sinning.
My attitude has changed towards confession Today I find it appalling that Catholics almost never go to confession anymore when it truly helped me to become a better person! Cherry Wan - One thing we all need to realize is that we are sinners by nature as well as sinners by practice. The hardest thing for us all to do is to admit that we are guilty sinners before a holy God. We try to do our best and to control our tongues. We are wasting our time completely. Even if we could manage it, the Bible is clear that 'All our righteousnesses are like filthy rags in the sight of God'. Also it says in Romans ch. 3 v 23: For there is no difference, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God'.
That is the bad news. Here is the good news. Jesus said: 'I am come, not call the righteous, but sinners to repentance'. 'The Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost'. The apostle Paul reminds us: 'This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief'.
For by grace (God's unmerited favour) are we saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest anyone should boast'.
Ask God to save you, for Christ's sake and glory. (John ch. 6 v 37).

Catholics lukewarmness and not caring about the Lords name is one of our biggest problems in the Church. I cringe everything I hear Jesus’s name used in cursing or in any other wrong way. It especially bothers me when I hear other Catholics I know in my parish say it without any remorse or care. I just say a prayer for them and ask for Gods mercy. I wish I had more courage to confront them but I get so angry that I fear I would say something hurtful and judgemental. I know when I have taken Gods name in vain, I kinda smack myself to remind myself of what I’ve just done. I’m grateful for the grace God gives me in being aware of the name above all names that is Jesus Christ. Thank you Father Mike for all you do! Peace and goodness to you

Praying the Rosary every day is extremely helpful against this sin (and all sins, but especially this one).
I would also like to recommend some more specific things that I think you may find helpful in breaking this vice:
      1. Foster a love for the Name of God. This comes through meditation on the Person of Jesus and the Eucharist (especially through the mysteries of the Rosary).
      2. Bless His Name throughout the day in reparation for those who blaspheme it. Say "Blessed be the Name of God."
      3. Try to break the overall habit of exclamatory speech, even "harmless" phrases. Things like "shoot," "gosh," "darn" etc. are not inherently evil phrases, but they still perpetuate the underlying vice which leads to evil phrases in moments of serious frustration. Work on bearing frustrations silently. Make an effort to not even think exclamations and you will find that the struggle against saying them basically disappears.
I think those three things will help a great deal.
      God Bless.

Taking God's name in vain is much more than just avoiding using His name as a curse word. While that's included, the bigger picture of this commandment is about how we represent God. We are image-bearers of God, what we do or say tells those around us something about Him. The message of the 3rd commandment is that we should represent Him well.

YES! We have totally lost a reverence for and a belief in our Lord and creator. Using, saying His name in vain is a huge part of this. It became a really big deal for me after converting, and, as with many things, I have become acutely aware of the misuse of our Lord's name around me. I say a prayer each time I hear it. I recently heard a nun say "Oh my glory" which I think is a really cool exclamation instead. :-)
