When I started living in Germany, I realised Germans mostly don't know much about South India (some of them know Goa). Then when I started job and introduced myself to my colleagues, one of them asked me "Isn't Kerala the land where Communists and Catholics live together?". I was truly delighted to learn some of them did know details. Also another one of my colleagues asked "How come you don't know to swim? Doesn't all Indians swim in the Ganges 😐?

Germany has a department where they study malayalam, don't they?
Leave Germany, even North Indians doesn't know much about South India. For them, South Indian movies = Telugu movies, South Indian food = idli/dosa. They watch all Hindi-dubbed Telugu movies and generalise that South Indian movies are illogical, and don't have a good story. I am surprised that at least few Germans know more about South India than North Indians do.

I have experienced almost 80% of the things you said in the video. I live in Germany since 1 year. I once had a conversation with a German friend who asked me what is my Parent’s job and when I told him my mother is a teacher he was like he never knew Indian women are allowed to go for work. I was like wtf. He said that’s what he have heard from school and media. Most common misconception is about all Indians are poor, we don’t eat pig or meat, all speak so called Indisch, it’s hot everywhere in India. But I have also met people who have traveled to India and even Kerala and knows and loves our state and country too.

I had similar experience in etihad airlines. The entire row was filled with Malayalees going to Kerala for onam. The flight attendant was white and she didn’t even ask if we needed vegetarian or chicken. She just assumed we are vegetarians and gave us vegetarian meals that was nothing but paneer and pulses. Normally I avoid vegetarian meals because it has items that does not agree with my stomach especially on a 16 hour flight. I thought the chicken ran out do I didn’t say anything. I ate only the rice and discarded the rest and noticed there were still chickens meals left and serving to other non Indian passengers. The entire flight my stomach was bloated because I didn’t eat much. Thankfully the flight attendants provided snacks so I felt okay afterwards. I learned the hard way because of my skin colour I have to let people know I do eat meat.
I too have similar experience. When I was ordering food at some random cafe in Melbourne, an Indian looking girl came and told me that I should not order sausage roll as it has beef in it. I felt offended and straight away ordered that food. Sometimes, we Indians also stereotypes ourselves.
I do this when I felt the guy who take order is a typical Indian. Even though I usually don't prefer Beef to Chicken, I order beef everytime when an Indian guy standing in the counter

He was really puzzled and he had to make sure that it was not a mistake. I told him that I eat meat. The same guy was there when I went there again. He again had to make sure that I was not going against my culture. 😅

For me when I self introduce I use "from South India, Kerala" and people ask what's the difference and I try my best to distinguish the differences in culture. They are actually excited to hear that there is a class of people which are entirely different from rest of India. Like one of friend said in comment section 'land where communists and Catholics live together ' 😂. Here in Canada, there is a common norm that Indians = Sikh guys. 🤷

Now the one point where he is not ready to understand me is - I am finding it really difficult to live in his house (with MIL and FIL), which is surrounded by relative's houses, as I am a big introvert and his whole family is orthodox+extrovert+anti feminist.
I tell him that I need my own space to think and flourish. It's been 3 years since our marriage and i still find it hard to talk to my MIL because of my inhibitions and our differences of understanding.
There has never been any problems btwn myself and my in-laws, thanks to my introvert nature. The only thing is, I struggle everyday and it's a task for me to pass each day and i yearn for the time when I am alone in my room (happens rarely).
When I talk about having a different house, we end up in arguments and he makes me feel like I've done some sin just by thinking about having my own house..

I enjoy Vivek's vidoes a lot because it usually provides a lot of insight into a variety of topics but I can't say the same about this video. The irony is that this video seems like a stereotyping of all foreigners and most of the conclusions made seem to be on the basis of how Indians used to be depicted in Hollywood movies. Yes, misconceptions exist but it can't be generalized and even we have so many misconceptions about people in western countries ,Arab countries or East/South East Asian countries.
