    Really helpful video. Would you use these for most images or is this unique to Nebula? Also how do you reduce the size of the image that you mention at the start. I'm a bit clueless. As the file size is massive.

    • @AstroFarsography
      @AstroFarsography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Matt. My intention was to teach you the tools and their uses so you can take them to Lunar or galaxy photos as well. What levels do, why curves do etc.
      As for the file size I can't remember off the top of my head right now and I'm at work. There's a comment around here somewhere where the same question was asked. So if you can find that before I get home to look it up, that could give you your answer :)

    Please do a tutorial using Gimp on a galaxy from a raw stacked or otherwise image. It is hard to know how to bring out the correct detail in a galaxy like m31 or m33 Triangulum or the m101 Pinwheel. This would be very helpful since Gimp is free and a very good editor. Thanks again.

    I just started in astrophotography 6 months ago and this was so helpful. I have been frustrated as there is so much to learn in this hobby. This is the first video I have found that explained in plain English what is supposed to be done during processing after DSS. Thank you for being so easy to listen to and to follow at your pace. I walked through this with you and came out with a decent Rosette Nebula (one of my stacked images that red applied to). I will watch many more times as at the end with the brush and contrast parts I think I finally popped a blood vessel in my brain : ) At 58 years old I really needed to see this to give me hope that I "will get it" some day. Thank you again.

      You are very welcome. Thank you for the words about the tutorial! I hope to see your rosette nebula someday as well!
      My main intention was to go at a steady pace and clarity. I also try to explain what things so rather than just "do this", as if you know the system you can then apply it better than just being told to do it

    I would love and Andromeda tutorial to be one of your next. When I tried the workflow you've showed for the North American Nebula I immediately ran into a problem I don't know how to solve. In making the Star Mask, selecting stars by color also selects the core of the galaxy. When I try to unselect it, Gimp unselects all of the stars of that color selection. If I'm going to try to bring out the faint parts of the galaxy, it seems as if I should not include the core in the Star Mask, but I don't know how to do that.

      @ginnybourne6374 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AstroFarsography Frustrating but very rewarding when it works out :-D Siril seems OK for the registration and stacking and I think I have that sorted now. It really is all about the processing you demonstrate in this vid. I have Darktable and something called PyAstro hooked up to GIMP as well. Darktable has some nice features for handling RAW images and allows me to open them with GIMP. PyAstro has some routines created specifically for processing too. So I think I have all the tools needed - it is just the firmware in my head that is old and slow lol

    Hi, I did my first Astro shoot today early morning. And the files are FITS. So i am following what you are doing, and now at the start, after First Level, i have come to First Adjustment. Here when i select Windows, Dockable Dialogue, and select Histogram, then click on Value, and on the drop down Menu, non of the values are settable, here i am supposed to select RGB, but even R, G, B are not selectable. Also in the 22KB Jpeg, i mages from the ASI294MC PRO, the Lagoon Nebula has all the rich red colours, but the FIT file which is about 23MB, is totally grey. even after landing in GIMP 2.10. What am i doing wrong. I am using a iMac. am i supposed to convey FIT to some other format. I tried that online converter, to TIFF and same result, all Grey. The Nembula Color tat is visible in the 22 KB Jpeg image is just not there. .

      Hi Ramesh, how are you stacking your images? What program? It sounds like they're not being debayered so they're gray. It requires debayering during the stacking process and that will then yield you a colour image

    As a noob I am very thankful for this walk through, but I am also very frustrated with the lack of explanations.
    As an example, at around 12:50-13:10 a layer suddenly appears after hearing you tap the keys on your keyboard. It has taken me 2 hours to get 13 minutes into the video going back and forth trying to understand what you are doing since there are no captions of explanations for a lot of the things you do, but this move is like the trick of an illusionist. Maybe I get it if I once again back up to the last time you made a selection via colour.
    What do you do beyween 12:50 and 13:10 to create the new layer?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ps. I am very thankful for helping me understanding, despite it being a bitr of hard work ;)

    This is probably the most informative astrophoto editing video I have EVER seen - BRAVO! Most go over PS but why? We amateur astronomers almost exclusively use freeware/shareware like Stellarium, SharpCap, Deep Sky Stacker, etc. etc. - why do most of us use PS?

    A million thanks for posting this video... I'm a beginner astrophotographer and not graphics processor. For the last 3 years I have been trying hard to process my poor quality captures with GIMP but couldn't get it to work. I'll not be able to get PixInsight for the next couple of years. I'm not finding any good tutorials online to process astroimages with GIMP. I request you to please post more videos of processing astroimages with GIMP. Also if you know any tutorials online to process astroimages then please let me know. Once again many thanks for the video... :)

      You are most welcome! When I had just begun processing was the hardest part to be sure! I do intend on making more tutorials in the future for GIMP and Photoshop.
      I couldn't find too many online tutorials either when I began. Hope to see some of your work from following my tutorial! 😁

    Just subscribed - keep up the good work. Really pleased that someone is taking the time to help others obtain the best from Gimp as the only editor I have paid for is AstraImage (40 U.S. dollars roughly). PS, PI etc, might be alright but then you have to pay and to spend the time learning and I would much rather be outside at the telescope than sat in front of a computer. After being greatly disappointed with Windows 10 and the trouble it has caused me last year I have migrated to Linux on another machine so tutorials on Gimp are received with much gratitude. Something on Siril for stacking (free and on Linux) might be of benefit to people. Looking forward to catching up on your other vids now - thank you.

      Thanks for the support and the comment! Yes this hobby can be expensive enough before needing the processing software also!
      I have a few other GIMP tutorials in mind that I need to rehearse and record but I'll continue with them!
      As for the stacking program, j don't run Linux so unless it's available on Windows j won't be able to use it regrettably.

    Nice tutorial and walk through the features of GIMP which are useful for Astrophotography. One question though. Was there a bit of ringing of the stars? Or was that the outline mask? Also how do you save the final image?

    • @AstroFarsography
      @AstroFarsography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Dilip. The ringing in the stars would've been from my rough and not fine tuned selection process for making star masks. So if you take your time more with it and really get those selections nice and sorted then you'll be able to eliminate the ringing. I save the final image as a TIF to keep its quality, or as a GIMP working file. When I'm ready to export and share I just save it as a JPG.

    neat. two comments and a question: you mentioned there is a larger image, so if i wanted to reproduce what you had, this is going to be very hard. meaning, the steps, levels etc. are not encoded in gimp in reproducable steps I believe. that's a shame. I don;t know if darktable can do all the things you did, but if it did, that would be the way to do this. This way all the steps are in an xml file, all the procedures have parameters.
    My second comment is your picture is already in a single colorimage it seemed. what if you had 3, or heavens forbid, 4 or 5 filters B/W images, that's a nice new challenge. I've heard of a photoshop plugin that can do this, at the time gimp could not do 16 bit, and you need 16bit to really do that kind of work. So would be neat to see if one could reproduce that workflow. It's called the FITS liberator. I believe the STSCI picture are or were made with this.
    FInally a question: the image is very red, in fact, it's red. but i saw you shift the range to make red range closer to be matching the green and blue? so I would have expected more colors than red.

    • @AstroFarsography
      @AstroFarsography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there thanks for the comment
      I believe it'll be fine if you use a bigger picture. I didn't mean for this tutorial to be a "follow my exact steps" style and more so I try to teach the tools so you can go apply them to images the size of a passport picture, or a billboard :)
      Yes making a composite image in GIMP is another challenge to make LRGB or SHO images etc. I used s one shot colour picture here because it's what i suspect would be more common. I have got composite tutorials in the works coming up
      And yeah, the final image is really red. I somewhat blame my old monitor for that 😀 even though I adjusted colours and such I'm not sure why or how it's still so red 😅 I've improved myself now and I believe I could do much better these days
