I still adore the fact that Batman's "This is why Superman works alone" line in Batman And Robin singlehandedly ties the entire Batman franchise up to that point: Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman And Robin, with the only live action Superman franchise that existed back then: Superman, Superman II, Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, Supergirl, and Superman Returns. Oh and yes, I know Superman Returns came out in 2005, but it's still part of the original Christopher Reeve series even if he Brandon Ruth did replace him because Christopher Reeve died.

Yes, they shoe horn so much into a story to set up sequels and spin offs that they ignore the actual story. But they never learn. Tom Cruise did with The Mummy, what The Rock did with Black Adam. Reposition a shaky franchise around them, and then kill it with their first and only film. People forget that the "Dark Universe" (yeah I cringed when I saw that logo) plans started earlier than Cruise's movie, with Dracula Untold. When Cruise signed on, everything was shifted to make him the entry point. Maybe he equated the success of a franchise to a its progenitor star, and he wanted to pull off a Robert Downey Jr.
Luke Evans was probably pissed, but he doesn't have the star power that Tom has.

Good list! I feel these movies also killed of their respective franchises before being rebooted or getting a belated sequel:
    - Rocky V. I think it was the lowest grossing of the entire franchise and it would be 16 years until they released Rocky Balboa
    - Robocop 3
    - The Next Karate Kid
    - Beverly Hills Cop III
    - Speed 2: Cruise Control
    - The Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor. Weren't they planning to do more and make Fraser's son in this third one be a future lead?
I was debating to include Godfather 3, but then Godfather 4 never got past the planning phase and #3 did decent business from what I believe.

The Eragon movie by itself wasn't half bad and was a passable movie. But if you had read the books beforehand, you would know how badly they butchered the source material. Like, I get that you have to condense book material to fit a movie's runtime but with the Eragon movie, it felt like the events took place over a few days to a week. But in the book, it took place over a couple of years. Like, Eragon trying to get to the Varden took at least a year in the book but the movie made it seem like it was just a day or two's journey on horseback. Plus, they changed up a lot with Saphira, one main detail being her wings. The book specifically noted that she had leathery/membrane wings like a bat, but they gave her feathery birdlike wings in the movie. They also sped up her growth alarmingly. In the book, it took at least two weeks before she was roughly the size of a horse. But in the movie, she flies up into the air as a hatchling, gets struck by lightning, and returns big enough to fly with two or three passengers. They left out soo much, from the travels, to key characters. Hell, they even killed off some of the villains in the movie that didn't actually get killed off until the 3rd (or maybe 4th) book.
By itself, without reading the books, the movie was just...okay. But if you were a big fan of the books, you know how badly the movie ruined any chances of their being a sequel unless they completely remake the first movie again.

Also came out after the Disney acquisition. So, it could also share the same factor as to why the last vestiges of the DCEU have been bombing lately, disinterest in a dead movie universe. Why invest time in watching something that will have no payout? Especially with comic book movies, where it's all about the continuation of the universe.
As standalones, most are not that great... they rely on continuing to the bigger arching story.

I guess the thing with Fantastic Beasts is that people were at first expecting something more focused on, you know, Fantastic Beasts, the book regarding the magic animals of the Harry Potter world. They delivered an unexpected story, but I guess it did have good reception enough and some vision into other countries of the magic world, so it warranted a sequel.
Then the sequel came and it was kinda meh. The "Fantastic Beasts" name was just that, a name. It also felt less like a movie and more as a setup for upcoming movies, which forgot to be a good standalone product. Also, no Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, instead getting someone who looks like the principal of a non-magical school.
So, of course, the third movie wasn't generating enough interest and the few people who went to see it saw even less magical creatures and the plan of Grindelwald, who was basically built up as being the most dangerous Dark Wizard before Voldemort showed up, was basically tricking people into electing him president.
Even his romantic subplot with Dumbledore felt tacked on.

The problem with Dark Fate is it killed off John Connor only to replace him with a different female version of the same character. This franchise already had a strong female character with Linda Hamilton, and the best idea they had was "What if she had to protect a different version of herself?" They never had a good story in mind, it's just a rehash or shit we've already seen with different characters. It's the movie equivalent of a rerun.
