1:17 Wow, lot of complicated answers ahead of me. Here’s how I did it:
10x14 = 140
2x14=28
140+28=168
Me too
This the way I did it
12 2 x 4 = 8, 2 + 4= 6, 1 x 1 = 1 168
x14
-------
168
I try to always go with multiples of 10,2, or 5. Makes life a lot easier with math, at least for me. Use the other numbers if you have to, but I try and start there.
I did the same, at school we had a teacher who gave us long cards, starting with 1 x 1 and ending with 12 x 12, we had to chant them so we memorised our times tables.
@@JL-jr9gk absolutely. Sadly they don’t make the kids do that anymore
12x10= 120 12x4 = 48 add that together and Bada boom 168
You are technically using the distributive property.
Did the same 😊
This is the way
There is another way: 12 x 14 = 6 x 28 = 3 x 56 = 150 + 18 = 168 bada boom²
Just try this with these very convenient 32 x 12 1/2 or 3 1/3 x 27
But also with 36 x 24 = 72 x 12 = 144 x 6 = 288 x 3 = 900 - 36 = 864
Or 15 x 256... 10x 256 + 5x 256 = 2560 + 1280 = 3840 not so easy
but 15 x 256 = 30 x 128 = 60 x 64 = 3600 + 240 = 3840 is much easier for me.
@@panlomito true , but I as a highschool drop out find it easier my way without pen and paper or a calculator .
168 did 12 x 12 (common 144) then added 24 5 seconds
(10s also works) thamks for an easy one.
I don't know about the USA, but it was common to learn the 12x table, at least in UK schools. Since I grew up there, this was easy: 12x12 and add 24.
Me too (Netherlands) with 11x until 20x table, but also the second power of 11, 12, 13, 14 etc. until 25²
yep, 12x12 has been with me for 45 years...
Back in the day we had to have up to the 12th table memorized by 4th grade. Now a days here in the states the kids have been coddled for the last 20 years. It's worse now as BLM says math is racist. Don't know the logic in that but that's what's being said.
12 X 14?
Well, everyone knows 12 X 12 = 144
so 144 + 24 = 168
No Algebra Required.
!
yyyouodid uealgebra for the following transformation:
12*14=12*(12+2)=12*12+2*12
ou did that without recognicing,that thistransformation *is* a part of algebra.
It is the fdztibutive law.
I find the quickest way is times the nearest 10 in the first number which would leave 2 in this maths question 10 x 14 = 140 + the 2 that is left 2 x 14 = 28 + 140 = 168
Multiplying any two numbers that are separated by one number Is the same as the square of the number in between minus one. This problem is the same as 13 squared (169) minus one equals 168.
Or
N-1 X N+1 = Nsq - 1
Or because I have chickens and think in dozens, this is one gross (144) + 2 dozen (24) equals 168.
For me I know that 12 x 12 is 144. And that 2x12 is 24, so we add 24 and 144 to get 168. You could also approach this as 10x14 is 140, and then add 2x14 to also get 168 which is probably what most people did (as some may not have memorized what 12x12 is but can probably easily figure out what 10x14 is).
I did minor in computer science in college (specifically things like programming) so being able to do math like this and powers/exponents was basically required to figure things out quickly and convert numbers between bases (say base 16, base 8 and base 10).
And while the explanation of breaking down the problem was helpful, I almost find it to be too much for me to think about as I was able to figure out the answer quicker in my head using the method I mentioned above. But the explanation is good for people who maybe couldn't.
Well explained! I've been doing that in my head for decades which is a proof that learning math at a young age is not useless as some want us to think.
Now, let's have a problem like this one: 1356 X 345. I'd like to know if there is some short cut for solving multiplications of multiple digits numbers without a calculator or a piece of paper.
On the top of my head I don't see that there is a simpler way than the one you just explained but I may be wrong.
12 x.7= 84 x2= 168
Or 12 x 7 x 2 = 168
My Dad taught me mental math.
Without paper or pencil, you have to hold the problem inside your head, or in your mind's eye, so it has to be simple.
Funny thing is if you try to multiple say 6 x 8 is = to (7 x 7)-1 but with 2 numbers say 12 x 14 is = to (13 x 13)-1 that's the way I did it.. found this out as I didn't like multiplying 7 x 9 when doing tables at school, so played with the math and found a formula that if the multiple numbers that are two away from each other this works.
We did our tables to 12 as we had pounds, shillings and pence at the time but she often ask for the 13 times and 14 time tables. Go figure.
But yes in the head hundreds and then ten's the other bit, always made sense.
Nice !!!
12x12=144 plus 12x2=24 . 144 +24 =168. That's how I did it in my head. ( Old School retired Maths teacher.)
Many years ago before I started school my wise mum taught me the 12 times table, this made mental arithmetic shortcuts easy throughout my life! She also taught me the alphabet backwards but im still waiting to find a use for that! 😅
I did 12 x 10 = 120 then 12 x 4 = 48 . 120 + 48 = 168 I really struggle with maths - give me English any day!! Your way made my head explode!!!
I haven’t seen this way yet. In my head, I solved this way:
12•14= 1•1=1 then 2+4=6 then 2•4=8. Put the sums together = 168
At the title card, the answer is 168.
2 * 14 = 28, 10 * 14 = 140, 140 + 28 = 168.
Easy!
"Mr. TH-cam Math Man's got all these free calculators to distribute."
Man, I wish! :'D
When in school I memorized squares up to 25. Which made this easy. 144 + 24 = 168
Is it 168?
7x12x2
12 x (10 + 4) = 120 + 48 = 168. Breaking one number into 10 + X makes all multiplication much, much simpler.
10x14=140
2x14= 28
Total. 168
''In my head'' would be 10 x 14 = 140 plus the 2 x 14 = 28 168
Well ..
that's the way we were taught to multiply by a number that was more than 10, at school
12*14= 14^12=14+12=26
7*12 = 84, doubled is 168
that's the way I did it!🙂
168
I went about it in a different way. I know 12 x 12 = 144. I then added 2 x12 which is 24 to that.
@@loiscampbell3510 Wow! I used my old elementary rule my 12X4 = 48 imagine write down 8 and carry 4, then 12x1=12 plus 4 =16 the answer is 168.
I am so happy that I learn and understand Matrix today! And can remember.
That's the method that I came up with on my own back before I got in my accident. Thanks for the refreshing process of thinking.
1×1=1, 2+4=6, 2x4=8
168
12x10=120 +(12x4)=168
Best is 14x10=140
Is left only 2x14=28
140+28=168
That's how I did it too. Easy peasy.
I got the answer by 12 squared plus 12 times 2. 144 plus 24 euals 168.
10 x 14 = 140 +28 = 168. I do stuff in my head all the time like that. Bigger numbers too.
198
So many ways to solve it. When I first started teaching I'd encourage them to find ONE way that works for them. Now I'm forced to teach them at least 4 different ways because they will be asked about all 4 different ways on our state testing. As a result many of them aren't able to master just ONE way.
5 secs 12 x12 + 12x2 =
12x12=144
12x2=24
144+24= 168
same as 6x28
120+48=168 is how I did it
12×14=168
144+28=168
10x10=100
4+2 ---> 6 in ten's column
4x2---‐> 8 in one's column
‐-----
168 😅
so my immediate thought would be 120 + 48 = 168 followed by 7 12s are 84 times 2 is 168
Isn't it easier to multiply 2x4=8 and 2+4=6 1×1=1 so the answer is 168
I dont see what the difficulty here is. Its not like were talking triple or quadruple digit numbers. The answer is 168, obviously. All you have to do is separate 12 into 10 and 2, and then mulitple each of them times 14. Add the results together and you get your answer.
12x11+12+12
Goodness me
Grade 3 mental exam
12 x 4 = 48
Put down the 8 and carry the four 12 x 1 = 12 + 4 = 16
168 answer
I went (2x14)+(10x14). That's the way I've done it since the third grade.
My mental math was Gross......12(12+2) 144+ 24= 168.
I did not cheat!
1468
Sorry is 168
Stop dragging, get on with it
Siri said 168… yes I cheated this time ❤😂❤😂❤😂❤
Before I watch, I got 168.
Does this count? : "Alexa, what is 12x14?"
Uh, 168 Mr. Math Man!
These are great, and I would like to watch many of them... You may be good in math, but you need help in communication... too long-winded, interruptions, beating about the bush... Can you do something to improve your delivery of the subject? Many thanks!
I realized that the equation equals 6*2*7*2. I then went 6 * 7 is 42, 42 * 2 is 84 and 84 * 2 is 168.
Creative solution!
Smart calculation: I learned my students to recognize easy numbers. So for example 32 x 25
= 16 x 50 = 8 x 100 = 800 or (8x4) x 25 = 8 x ( 4 x 25 ) = 8 x 100 = 800
instead of 30 x 25 + 2 x 25 = 3 x 10 x 25 + 50 = 750 + 50 = 800
146?
!!!!!!!
Dude like all math problems you drag on and on! Get to the mathematical point!
‘Distribative’ is not a word in the English language. And ‘algeberric’ is a complete abomination of the language. I wouldn’t trust any math teacher who is unfamiliar with the word ‘algebraic.’
I like your site and enjoy brushing up on the math problems but you talk too much. I wish you would just show the steps and solve the problem!
Once again, You have taken a simple problem and confused us! No thumbs up or like from me.... Give it a rest.....!
Agree completely. This guy is a joke when it comes to math education. I just feel sorry for students who take him and his ‘educational’ methods seriously.
It was great 🎉
