That is known as bench storage and is used commonly in glitched speedruns.

As a Hollow Knight Speedrunner, I can confirm that this glitch is not easy to reproduce, as far as I know only with main menu storage on earlier patches. I believe that the effects allow you to equip charms while not on a bench, and open inventory during transitions.

If we could abuse this bench storage we if it still lets you change charms we could use it to put on specific charms for certain parts this could be useful for certain areas. The question though is, how did you get the bench storage?

one time i accidentally got bench + menu storage, so i could still move like normal and attack, but at the same time i was in control of the menu and could equip/unequip charms

I actually know how to do this (Latest Patch):
Die while having inventory opened.
Since dying with inventory opened gives you time to move in the death animation, Dash Slash (Idk if any other ability can cause this too).
Then open inventory as you respawn. Done
Although I can’t explain it, if anyone knows why tell me :)
