These type of stories actually delayed my entry into RPGs. I have since had only positive experiences, but it really put me off for a long time. I could only think about all the ways it could go wrong - rather than all the ways it could be awesome.
@@thegreattotemaster eh, I think it depends on the communities you recruit from and how much you actually screen people. I've never encountered any issues in any groups I've been in, because we're quite upfront about expectations and what is and is not allowed (we also tend to be much more free with adult or messed up themes as a means of storytelling, which also helps weed out other people too)
Man, stories like this are why I pretty much never have interest in any romantic subplots in DND games. At best it just is going to make things awkward, but at worst...
They can be quite interesting, 2 of my married irl male players have the most delightfully stupid rp of “we are tieflings, therefore we are horny, badum tsh” and it just leads to like, comically bad flirting, REALLY bad
with the right players it can be good times, but honestly any time i start a game, i aske people playing if it's something they are ok with or interested in. i ask them individually so no one feels any pressure, if anyone isn't cool with it the campaign doesn't have any.
At best it can lead to some really interesting character development, not just weird interactions. I'm dealing with the first romantic interest in one of my games and so far its genuinely turning out to be pretty interesting. My character is a true neutral elf ranger who is generally apathetic to the world besides people she considers in her circle (though she is sneakily wholesome but hides it well). Despite her being 200+ years old she has assumed she is asexual since she has only ever had one crush and respected her superior too much to potentially ruin their mentor/mentee relationship. Now our barb has started getting really protective of her because she reminds him of his mother who he lost bc she was an adventurer who went off without backup, and he's worried my character will do the same. Its sparking a vulnerability in my character and a crack in her "armor" and her constant resting bitch face as she experiences interest in him. Its opening up for some really interesting potential in moving my character from an edgy character to the vulnerability of being a woman in love. Learning to find balance in an active adventurer party is going to be pretty fun to develop, imo. Playing dnd means roleplaying the life of another, sometimes that includes romantic interests and sometimes it doesn't.
"She asked if she could make her next character a childhood rival of Dubz, so there's at least an RP reason for her IRL hate" How the f*** could anybody ever think that could possibly be a good idea?
@@animeotaku307 Usually. Sometimes it's fun making dysfunctional groups that get forced into working together though and it can actually work really well if you have a meta-level understanding of PvP being a last resort kind of deal. The narratives woven by people struggling to find a reason why their character doesn't attempt to murder the other 3 is often quite interesting or at least hilarious ^^ This is obviously quite a fringe kind of game type though, but just goes to show that a solid session zero with a firm grasp of what the the next few sessions/months/years should be about is sooooooo very important :)
@@Micras08 Yeah, but you want that in-game, not in real life. That’s what my current group is like; our characters butt heads a lot, but us, the players, get along fine.

Me if I don't get invited. But legit I think they told Paladin about why Sorcerer isn't playing with them anymore in their next session (or maybe just gave a vague summary of it??)
Sorcerer has indeed broken the law with this. In many countries, this violates a person's Right to Identity/Personality. Recording a person without their knowledge is illegal in many places. If Sorcerer in any way publishes those creepy-ass videos or makes even a single penny off them, OP can sue the hell out of him. It's likely far too late now but I'd suggest OP get in touch with some free legal advice.
If they're American. If the people in the story are Canadian, there's no issue due to the one party consent law, where as long as you are one of the parties engaging in the engage, you are legally allowed to record private conversations.
@@_UPRC Even so, there's got to be something about using recordings taken of other people (whether they know they've been taken or not) for the purposes of nsfw materials w/o their consent. Esp if you're going to be distributing them. Like that, can't be legal. It's dubious at best.
OP could maybe get them on the fact that Sorcerer did not have them sign a talent release form, and therefore did not give them consent to use their likeness (face, voice, performance, etc) in any produced media. I have no idea if that would apply in this situation but its worth bringing up?
@@michaelr6332 but that also means that if it's shared to a state where it is illegal, you can sometimes still get them. They even told me they wouldn't do anything. This was after I couldn't get him to share all these recordings, because if he truly recorded every conversation we have, over the phone and in person, then that means he recorded himself constantly telling me and our then 6yr old daughter about how he plans on selling her if he every got custody of them over me. @@godcat_thing nothing wrong with horny art when it's being made ETHICALLY. animating porn of a character, with permission from the character's creator, with someone who is willing and able to record any dialogue you might want/need? might not be everyone's cup of tea, but no one is getting hurt. stealing the character _and_ the creator's voice, both without consent, is. uh. pretty unethical
Y’know, last I checked, a guy refusing the advances of a woman is the exact opposite of toxic masculinity. It’s like Karen was just using random words to try and sound smarter.
They're not random. She was using buzzwords to try and intimidate and shame them into compliance, essentially threatening them with the "sexist" label, and it has sadly worked before. It's a nasty tag to get stuck with because in the wrong circumstances it can make you into a pariah.
I think it's projection. Karen's behavior is a better example of toxic masculinity and even a bit of r*** culture. She would *not* respect his boundaries and acted entitled to a relationship with him. I know Karen's a female, but gender equality goes both ways.
Same here: that title deeply worries me. I have some eye bleach at the ready, just in case: Rabbits are my favorite animal, and I have a folder full of cute bunny pictures open on my computer. It's ready to go in case of a cringe emergency.

That first story was creepy on another level! The second was a real pain. Especially Karen claiming Toxic Masculinity when she clearly doesn't understand what it means and wanted to make them feel bad.
The word of the day is: Femcel. I'm not surprised if that second story has/will be crossposted on r/nicegirls sometimes. There's also something really contagious about listening to someone try to read a story while also trying not to laugh. A good video, and two really bizarre stories.
Karen: "Stop perpetuating toxic masculinity!" Also Karen: "She was _sending signals_ , why didn't you immediately make advances on her despite your current established relationship?"
Not sure why some people are willing to sacrifice their enjoyment for a *game* just to allow toxic people to play. It's not being nice, it's letting them walk all over you. Glad the group got to continue instead of the DM ending the campaign though.

But going all secrecy and... taking your voice for it? When you're not even aware? That's... that's going too far. MUCH too far. The second story is all BS on Simp and Karen. I... I don't even know how women can say such BS without hearing the hypocrisy in their words. IDK.
I'd find it a little creepy and worth a talk with the other player, at least to set boundaries (like it's fine to be attracted to the character, but pls let's make it clear that this is about the CHARACTER and should have nothing to do with me). In theory smut of a character is fine. This way oversteps.

2nd story is one of the best horror stories i''ve heard in a while: Over the top outrageously self-centered and oblivious villains and a satisfying end for said rabid Karens complete with the impotent threat to get other users banned from roll20 lol Great stuff.
I would almost be impressed by that first story if it wasn't so creepy. The second one was simply amazing, the feats Karen pulled off with her greatsword truly exceeded my expectations. "Roll damage," and she nailed it.
Man I feel for the OP in the second story. There's been a lot of games where I held onto a disruptive player because it was so much work to find players.
WTF, imagine doing something illegal by recording someone else's voice, using it to make animation of their female character with the dudes voice and then choked his turkey to it. Then proceeds to get mad when called out, saying that the op should be thankful he faps is prolly micro turkey to it, then insults him for playing a female character. This ladies and gentlemen is that why it's important to have father in your life. Happy Thanksgiving crab nation
The part that always gets me about people that try and pull the "You aren't role-playing!" thing , is usually the player being accused IS RPing (usually pretty well), just not the way the accusing player WANTS them to. Remembering a different party member wanted to talk to you and leaving is still role-playing in character
"Can I be a childhood rival of this other player's character, so it makes sense that my character hates his character just like I hate him" Who the hell agrees to let a person like that stay?! They clearly can't put their irl issues for someone aside if they need their character to also hate the other guy's character.
To be fair on the first one, I'm actually a little bit impressed. I've had friends draw fanart of our characters, but never that. That's some real dedication
The fact that the first OP pretty nonchalantly said that this WASN'T the worst D&D experience he'd had blows my mind in the worst way. One of my "worst" tabletop experiences was probably one of my fellow players being annoyed with the fact that the party was on an uneven power level that had made certain things unfun for him for a while now, to which another player replied that it sometimes annoyed him when we didn't respond to eachother's rp hooks. Our response? We proceeded to immediately call in an emergency meeting to mitigate those problems because everyone should have equal fun at the table. A few rounds of house rules, meta talks and a promise to quickly speak up about potential future problems instead of letting them fester later, we've all grown as a ttrpg AND friend group. We now feel much more confident in our own abilities and know we can count on our friends to be open about their problems in the future, aswell as go the extra rp mile without things getting awkward, because we've set clear boundaries and respect eachother. How people not only end up, but continue staying in such horrendously toxic groups such as in this subreddit continues to amaze me, and also makes me thankful for the great group I have.
That call about giving the numpty another chance was ming-boggling, _especially_ under the proposed circumstances. You should _never_ initiate an IC rivalry against someone you hate OOC. Nothing good _ever_ comes of that. OP got off easy here thanks to the stupidity and impatience of Simp and Karen.
Jesus man, you made me snort orange juice out my nose when you called for Pistol Shrimp, and Citizen Snips. Laughing, and screaming in pain at the same time 5 out of 5, would listen again.
Any time a CritCrab D&D horror story comes up, it's an encounter we may not return from. Jokes aside, how is that first story not OP's worst experience at the table?
This is probably the first time I've heard "but somehow, it gets worse" and was genuinely shocked. Normally I hear crazy stuff like this and laugh or shake my head, but I thought I heard the end of it already... *NOPE* .
on the first story i dont think theres anything inherently wrong with being attracted by another player's character, i find it akin to being attracted to a character from a book or show or whatever HOWEVER unlike those other situations you sit with said character's creator on a regular basis, whether in a voice chat, text chat or literally so by Tiamat's scaly hide keep it to yourself and dont be a freaking creep
"this isn't the worst experiance" I want to know what managed to be worse than this because I can think of very few things that I'd call worse than this.
"Its Fantasy. You can do what you want, not limiting yourself to real life. You just gotta limit yourself to MY real life desire to play out MY fantasy of our characters fucking."
there is something criminal here depending on where you live you could take him to court for using your voice and/or intellectual property (the character) without your consent
in case you wonder about the involved speech synthesis technology. you can train an ai, and have minimal emotional emphasis on words from minimal context, to sound quite realistic, like in [fluttershy reads the bee movie Script ...]. The result usually lacks a lot of qualities of basic voice acting and overall 44kHz detail, but sure, its good enough for cheap porn. such "deep fakes" are currently in a race for being detectable or not.
The second story really sounds like that one cat/fox girl one; entitled girl flirts with guy who already has a girlfriend, she gets pissy when he quashes her erp, her friend white knights for her when he turns her down.
12:37 I like to imagined how that happened in the D&D universe. The Paladin comes over, heals another person in his party, she looks at him, says screw you, and try’s to commit suicide by stabbing her self. Everyone must have been so confused.
Fun fact: i dont know if there were anything criminal about it but you can sue this guy for using your voice on a product that, lets face it, he probably sold to some people, so its a copyright infringement

Second story is definitely made up whole cloth. It's the "I'm so great, now look at those evil hypocritical SJWs!" mixed in with "Weren't we gracious? Yet still, they wanted to cancel us despite them being the offenders!"

@@thegreattotemaster eh, I think it depends on the communities you recruit from and how much you actually screen people. @@shadowthehedgehog3113 They're hilarious because you've hindsight lmao, they are complete pain and will make you angry while going through them.
It's perfectly fine when it's done tastefully by adults.
with the right players it can be good times, but honestly any time i start a game, i aske people playing if it's something they are ok with or interested in. i ask them individually so no one feels any pressure, if anyone isn't cool with it the campaign doesn't have any.
I had a really good romantic subplot with issues that came up during the adventure, it was alot of fun!
But this is unholy...
"She asked if she could make her next character a childhood rival of Dubz, so there's at least an RP reason for her IRL hate"
How the f*** could anybody ever think that could possibly be a good idea?
I guess "overly optimistic" was an undersell.
Right? You want your group to get along somewhat for a good game.
@@animeotaku307 Usually. Sometimes it's fun making dysfunctional groups that get forced into working together though and it can actually work really well if you have a meta-level understanding of PvP being a last resort kind of deal. The narratives woven by people struggling to find a reason why their character doesn't attempt to murder the other 3 is often quite interesting or at least hilarious ^^
This is obviously quite a fringe kind of game type though, but just goes to show that a solid session zero with a firm grasp of what the the next few sessions/months/years should be about is sooooooo very important :)
@@Micras08 Yeah, but you want that in-game, not in real life. That’s what my current group is like; our characters butt heads a lot, but us, the players, get along fine.
my boyfriend and I have made a few characters that were rivals, and even had different dynamics to their rivalry. honestly those were some of the most fun interactions, but probably because as players, we both love each other dearly outside of the game. so it can be fun to be bastards to each other in-game

@@_UPRC in America that varies state by state. sadly.
Like no joke. He thinks this is a seriously viable option to make money off the kids when using them as a weapon against me for yrs never got me to give him half my paychecks (we haven't been together since about 2 weeks before i found out about her and hadn't done anything since. This was legit the first time I have ever heard CritCrab break his character (I’m not a regular viewer btw) and it makes this 100% funnier.
Depending on the jurisdiction, using someone's voice without their consent could be a legally enforceable offence.
The part that always gets me about people that try and pull the "You aren't role-playing!" thing , is usually the player being accused IS RPing (usually pretty well), just not the way the accusing player WANTS them to.
Remembering a different party member wanted to talk to you and leaving is still role-playing in character
"Can I be a childhood rival of this other player's character, so it makes sense that my character hates his character just like I hate him"
Who the hell agrees to let a person like that stay?! They clearly can't put their irl issues for someone aside if they need their character to also hate the other guy's character.
To be fair on the first one, I'm actually a little bit impressed. I've had friends draw fanart of our characters, but never that. That's some real dedication
Using someone's voice for illicit videos without their permission could possibly qualify as sexual harassment.
I like how out of everything we have seen, this one guy managed to break CritCrab.
He managed to crack the crustaceans chassis
In the second story. All I have to say is. Op you were the chosen one. You had the high ground.
Isn't the pistol shrimp able to click its claws to make a stream of heat that is hotter than the surface of the sun
I love how Critcrab slowly loses his sanity as he reads more of this hell hole.

I mean, sometimes the dice just don't favor someone. Of the now millions of people playing D&D, a story like this is not a statistical improbability.
Second story is definitely made up whole cloth. It's the "I'm so great, now look at those evil hypocritical SJWs!" mixed in with "Weren't we gracious? Yet still, they wanted to cancel us despite them being the offenders!"
@@DrZaius3141 Yeah I thought this story really did not make any sense either. Maybe not fake, but I think heeeeavily edited.
I once had a character spout actual jibberish and ask to persuade a guard with it. My response was, "Roll me a nat 20 and we'll talk." I didn't want to shut him down because the moment wasn't that serious, but he _was_ being ridiculous.
He rolled a nat 20 in the exact moment he needed it. Weird stuff happens. That's life.
Yikes! Thank God she had a good group that watched out for her and tackled it.
