    I'm working on a project right now and I needed to cut a 35-degree angle on a number of boards but my miter saw seems to have disappeared in our move across the country. So, I pulled out my speed square and totally forgot how to get the angle right for my cut. I found your video and your quick tips saved the day for me because I'm building something for my wife for Mother's Day and she's arriving later tonight. I should be able to finish it by then now that you've refreshed my memory on how to get my angle cuts correct!! Thanks for the tips!

    omg!!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! I love DIY projects but it's a hassle to have to wait for my husband to cut boards for me lol 😂I have no fear of hand tools. My husband has actually gifted me many!! Learning to cut with angles is going o be a game changer!! I have to admit, when he handed me a speed sQuare and asked if I knew how to use it. I THOUGHT I DID!! Thank you for the refresher!!

    Centre line can be found even easier (no math) and more accurately than your method:
    1. Draw a 90 degree line full width of the timber (this line can be the end/corners of the timber - just check it is 90 deg.)
    2. Draw two 45's - one from each end of the 90 deg. line/corner
    3. Centre is where the 45's cross over.
    Simple, fast and works on any size of timber without any maths!

      @@serenap.1041 maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I don't think you're suggestion works because 1.5 inches isn't the centre of a 2x4!
      My method works on any size timber without any maths so removes chance of arithmetic errors.

    • @serenap.1041
      @serenap.1041 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philbooth319 your right center is 1 3/4 for 2x4... I forgot a 2x4 is 3 1/2. Well if that's works for you then by all means. I just take the measurement and divide it, I'll have to try the way you suggested. Nothing wrong with trying and learning something new right?

    I'm just getting into woodworking and haven't even begun my first project yet, but I did receive 3 power tools for Christmas (circular saw, random orbit sander, and a drill/driver). I've literally done nothing yet, and am looking into what else I need to get to get started. I keep seeing the speed square and thinking maybe, but I won't be doing any rafters, or decks :-) So maybe I'll get one any way?

    • @TheDadNerd

      Speed square, ruler and measuring.
      My Dad always told me, measure twice, cut once.
      Since many of failed cuts during my beginning of woodwork, i now measure like 8 times haha
      If any tool is gunna help you, it's anything that do a solid measurement, good luck and all the best!

      He's purposely angling square until it measures 4. Then easier to do math. And 2 is the mid-point.

    • @totalcardetailing2022
      @totalcardetailing2022 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@80srockerable I understand that two is the middle of four, but when you show something on TH-cam and it is really a lot of people who don’t know a 2x4 don’t measure 2x4 and it really measures 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 would not have been hard to show a 1 3/4 for the middle.

    • @TheDadNerd
      @TheDadNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you missed the point. We all know 2 is not half of a 2x4. But that point I marked is the halfway point based on how I measured it. I didn’t do the final measurement to show what it measured out to be but that method found the true center.

    • @totalcardetailing2022
      @totalcardetailing2022 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheDadNerd Thank you, but I'm still confused. A car is in the shape of a car, and you drive it. But its not called a drive; it's called a car.
      A stove is in the shape of a stove, and you cook with it. It's not called a cook. It's called a stove.
      A circular saw is in the shape of a circular saw, and you cut with it. But it's not called a cut; it's still called a circular saw.
