SOOO beautiful! This gives me so much hope. I’m newer to gardening with funny spaces, clay soil, and weird sun hours. I have been researching and trying to plan so I’m ready to do better next year. I love to hear that they didn’t stress much and just went with whatever they were feeling. I’m going to try that approach, because one thing I know is that you can change and adapt when gardening. My eye loves the fun colors all filled in. Very inspirational!
Beautiful garden and tribute to your granddaughter! And an inspiring testament of how gardening can help a hurting heart. I love her attitude toward gardening and am even more inspired to be more bold with my space and overplant :)
I love it! At first I wanted just pink and purple but there was so many flowers that would have to stay out! So I just let it take off. If it doesn’t look good just move it!
I’m so sorry to hear about your granddaughter. These gardens are a beautiful express of her. I was thinking maybe replacing those moonflowers with clematis? Could be really pretty. Also thought maybe if you put hanging baskets on the pergola, this way you could keep the wood exposed. Thank you for sharing-it’s beautiful.
Yes for sure! I totally admit that I'm not an expert on natives in Iowa, but I think the following are natives and we grow them in the Cottage Garden and in other areas around our flower farm. Yarrow, columbine, echinacea, milkweed, baptisia, and mountain mint. We also have wild fields of monarda and goldenrod growing on the farm and a few more. Trying to add more each year! :)
I didn't create a complete plant list, but some of the varieties include: Lilliput Zinnia, French Marigold, Lady's Mantle, Sweet Romance Lavender, several varieties of daylilies and dahlias, several varieties of coleus, sage salvia, foxglove, gloriosa daisy, hyacinth bean vine, korean mint, hardy geranium, several varieties of garden phlox and echinacea, daisies, liatris, stargazer lilies, yarrow, dianthus. We mixed the beds to allow for a variety of colors throughout the season, and organized by height and bloom time. Hope that helps a little bit!
I always wonder why those woman invite their husbands to participate in a tour when they literally never get a chance to put more than 5 words in. - I am female but I think the husband had some knowledge too and I would have liked to hear what he had to say. The woman was soooo overly excited

That’s because she built this garden from her heart and her heart is full to overflowing😊
